🏆 League One Winner – Birmingham City
Birmingham City appear the standout club in League One this season and their summer recruitment suggests they are expecting an instant return to the Championship. Their American owners have flexed their muscles, which is much to the envy of practically every other club at this level and even some in the league above.
They have added Alfie May, a striker that has netted at least 20 goals in this league in each of the last three seasons, as well as raiding clubs in the Bundesliga and Eredivisie to recruit players on long term deals. Goalkeeper Ryan Allsop was a regular starter in the Championship last season and Marc Leonard impressed everyone in League One in a productive loan spell with Northampton Town.
The Blues tick all the boxes on the pitch, while they have hired highly-rated coach Chris Davies as the man to lead them back to the second tier. He fits the bill as an up-and-coming modern-day head coach that will get Birmingham playing an attractive style. Bolton Wanderers are rated as second-favourites to claim the title and they have mainly relied on free transfers this summer to try and better their squad.
The reality is that Blues look to have a much stronger squad compared to last season, despite being relegated to a lower level and everything points towards them rather comfortably claiming 1st place come the end of the season.
Their squad will comfortably meet the demands of this division and they could feasibly field a second XI that would be expected title contenders. Birmingham are rightly the short-priced favourites to be champions and anything less than top spot would be a major shock.
🥇 Birmingham City to win outright
📈 To Finish in the Top 6 – Huddersfield Town
Last season was below-par for Huddersfield Town but relegation won’t have come as a surprise in the end. They went through three permanent managers and this constant change meant frequently having to rebuild, which proved too much of a hurdle to overcome.
The Terriers will again have a new man in the dugout but in the form of Michael Duff, they have an individual proven in the lower leagues having won promotion out of League Two with Cheltenham Town and guiding Barnsley to the League One play-off final. He has wasted no time in adding new faces such as Herbie Kane, from his former club Barnsley, and also other proven League One talents such as Lasse Sørensen, Mickel Miller and Antony Evans.
In addition to this, Town have been able to retain the majority of their team from last season. Combined with the new recruits, they look nailed on to win plenty of matches this season.
There is a good amount of strength in depth for Duff to call upon and anything outside of the play-offs would be deemed a major disappointment. The odds place them as expected to finish the season in fifth position but an argument could be made for only Birmingham possessing a stronger group of players at their disposal at this stage.
The simple fact is they won’t be facing the calibre of opposition as they did last season and this group of players look a class above most at the level.
📈 Huddersfield Town to finish in the Top 6
⬆️ To be Promoted – Rotherham United
Yorkshire is well represented in League One this season and all three are expected to battle for promotion. In addition to Huddersfield Town and Barnsley, much is also expected of Rotherham United, who, of course, have manager Steve Evans back at the club hoping to bring the kind of success he brought to them in a previous spell in charge.
The Scot himself has all but said he expects to push for promotion and their summer recruitment strategy offers more hope of a successful season.
They have been one of, if not the, busiest League One club in terms of getting fresh faces in the building. Not only that, but it is clear that each of these players have been carefully identified to bring about a healthy overall balance, which was a major issue last season when they got relegated.
A fresh approach was required to put the previous campaign to bed, which was terrible – winning only five Championship matches. The striking element to Rotherham’s signings is that all are proven at this level and know what being part of a winning team is like. Evans, who has eight promotions across his managerial career, has therefore built a team of winners and he will expect them to do exactly that across 46 matches.
⬆️ Rotherham United to be promoted
⬇️ To be Relegated – Shrewsbury Town
Shrewsbury Town have firmly established themselves as a League One club and this upcoming campaign will be their tenth consecutively at this level. However, in all bar two of those years, they have finished 15th or below.
Although they are consistent in achieving bottom-half finishes and ultimately not being relegated, something really has to change for that to remain the case. They ended last season winless in seven league outings, so they somewhat stumbled over the line in retaining their status. Undoubtedly their biggest issue was a lack of goals. Salop were the lowest scorers in League One and only bottom-of-the-table Carlisle United had a lower xGF.
With that being the case, manager Paul Hurst has added new forwards in the form of John Marquis, Joshua Kayode and George Lloyd, but with respect, those individuals have not been among the goals in recent years. That, of course, could change but the reality is that Town’s summer recruitment still leaves them likely short of the required standard.
Money is being filtered down this league and teams are prepared to have a go, but the fear for Hurst is that he could be left behind and relying upon freebies and some loan deals is asking a lot for them to stave off an expected scrap at the bottom end.
⬇️ Shrewsbury Town to be relegated
📉 To Finish Bottom – Crawley Town
Crawley Town enjoyed their greatest day in recent times on May 19th, defeating Crewe Alexandra to win promotion in the League Two play-off final. However, not a lot has gone well for them since.
While there will be some excitement ahead of their first return to League One since 2014/15, there will be some big concerns, too. That is because a flurry of key players from their promotion campaign are no longer a part of the squad. Their unexpectedly impressive season attracted the attention of several clubs towards their players. So much so, that only three of their starting XI at Wembley a few months ago remain on the books.
Fresh blood has come in to replace them, but are they going to hit the ground running?
They’ll likely need time and the harsh reality is their best team doesn’t necessarily look as strong as last season. There is arguably greater depth to the squad overall but trying to replace key individuals such as Corey Addai, Liam Kelly, Danilo Orsi and Klaidi Lolos to name but a few is no easy task, especially when trying to do so with mostly free transfers from lower leagues.
