Leyton Orient v Man City

📅
Kick Off: Saturday 8th February at 12:15
🏆
Competition: FA Cup

Manchester City travel to Brisbane Road this Saturday to battle it out against Leyton Orient for this 4th-round FA Cup clash, marking their first meeting since a 2-2 draw in the second division back in 1966.

Pep Guardiola's Cityzens will be eager to bounce back after last Sunday's 5-1 thrashing at the hands of rivals Arsenal.

Manchester City defeated Salford with zero fuss in round 3, putting 8 goals past their city neighbours without reply. They go into Saturday’s round 4 match at Leyton Orient as 4/1 favourites for the competition and with them already knocked out of the Carabao Cup, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League and drawn to play Real Madrid in the play-off round of the Champions League, it could be argued that the FA Cup is the best opportunity the Cityzens have of getting their hands on any silverware this season.

Leyton Orient earned the bumper home tie v Man City by knocking out Derby County, of the Championship, on penalties after a 1-1 draw in round 3. Last weekend Leyton Orient couldn’t lay a glove on Stockport in a 1-0 defeat where they only created 0.40 xG from 8 shots with zero on target.

Of course, nothing can be ruled out with the magic of the FA Cup. But, the most likely scenario here is a routine away win. Manchester City are 1.08 to win the match but adding a clean sheet to the match outcome makes them a much more palatable price.

At 125/1 this is well worth a dart. Admittedly it’s a sample size of 1 but 2/3 legs of this special would’ve come in when Manchester City played Salford in round 3. Manchester City scored 3 first-half goals and 5 second-half goals that day. They forced 3 corners in each half.

The leg that didn’t land was the cards play and it’s fair to say that multiple Orient bookings become less likely with the more goals that Manchester City score. But there are a couple of pieces of relevant data that make it worth chancing a 3-figure priced longshot. Referee for the game, Darren Bond averages 4.5 cards per match this season and Orient have collected the 3rd most bookings in League One this season with 67.

🔍 Leyton Orient v Man City Player to Watch

🔴 Ethan Galbraith

Leyton Orient’s best player this season has been midfielder-turned-right-back Ethan Galbraith. The former Manchester United academy product was the subject of a reported 7-figure bid during the January transfer window, rumoured to be from Championship club Swansea. Galbraith likes to invert from a full-back position and get on the ball. But, he’ll likely have to focus more on the defensive side of his game here where he’ll most likely be in competition with Manchester City foul magnet Jack Grealish.

On average, this season Grealish has suffered 2.65 fouls per 90. Galbraith totals 1.05 fouls per 90 this season but he has made 2+ fouls in a game on 10 different occasions.

💻 Leyton Orient v Man City Form and Tactics

It’s difficult to ascertain what Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City XI will be for a tie against lower-league opposition. Rodri is out for the season and Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Jeremy Doku and Oscar Bobb are all still reported to be a couple of weeks away from returning to action. Maybe the best research we can do is to look at the strength of the starting line-up for the 3rd round versus Salford. Youngsters Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, Nico O’Reilly and Divin Mubama all started that fixture and were supplemented by fringe players James McAtee and Jack Grealish with the remainder of the team being first team regulars.

Since the 3rd round tie, Manchester City have played 6 matches of mixed fortunes. They threw away a 2-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Brentford before hammering Ipswich 6-0 at Portman Road. They then threw away another 2-goal lead and went on to lose 4-2 to PSG in the Champions League. They got back on track with 2 3-1 wins, first versus Chelsea and then in a ‘must-win’ Champions League tie v Club Brugge. However, last weekend they suffered a humbling 5-1 defeat to league rivals Arsenal.

Leyton Orient are weakened by an injury to defender Omar Beckles. They have a raft of January signings that either need integrating into the team or are cup-tied. Orient usually play a 4-2-3-1 formation but are expected to revert to a more reserved 4-1-4-1 here with veteran Darren Pratley playing a crucial role in front of the O’s back 4.

Richie Wellens’ men come into the fixture occupying the final play-off position in League One. They are 4th in the League One 5-game form table with 10 points from their last possible 15. Leyton Orient top League One for possession won in the final third - it’ll be fascinating to see if they try to maintain a high press.
