Alejandro Garnacho to have 2+ Shots on Target

Garnacho will have a point to prove here. I was really surprised that he didn’t even feature in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United, though Enzo Maresca’s plans to introduce him were derailed by Robert Sanchez’s early sending off at Old Trafford.

Garnacho’s shot volume has been high for a few seasons. He looks to get shots away as quickly as possible when he gets close to the box. Chelsea don’t have many wingers like this, Pedro Neto is workmanlike but doesn’t shoot often, and Jamie Gittens likes to take on his man but also cannot produce the same shot volume as Garnacho.

He will get chances here against a Lincoln side that are two divisions below Chelsea. Garnacho had 84 shots across his 36 Premier League appearances last season (3.44 per 90) with 30 of those attempts finding the target (1.23 per 90). Again, none of Chelsea’s wingers can boast those shot numbers, which is possibly a small insight into why Chelsea opted for Garnacho, which may seem a confusing move on the surface.

I’m banking on that high shot volume to spur Garnacho on to find the target twice here. He’ll be motivated by a necessity to still convince Maresca that he can be influential in his system.

Freddie Draper to have 2+ Shots

Draper has been bright for Lincoln in the early parts of the League One season with three goal contributions across his six starts so far.

Draper has had 11 shots across those games (2.39 per 90) with an impressive seven of those attempts finding the target (1.52 per 90). Lincoln won’t get many chances here, but I’d still expect them to finish between 6-10 shots in the game when factoring in Chelsea’s inevitable rotation and how positively Lincoln have started the season.

Draper had 36 shots across just 10 starts in League One last season (2.56 per 90), which is a record that shows his shot average stays pretty consistent over a larger sample size. Draper is only 21; he’ll be eager to make a mark on this game against the World Champions.

🔴 Home Fortress Gives Lincoln Belief Against Vulnerable Chelsea

Lincoln have made a really solid start to the season and should not be underestimated here. They’ve avoided defeat in eight of their nine games in League One so far this season and look to be a side that can make a push for the play-offs this year, after finishing 17 points off the pace last season.

They haven’t lost at home in League One this season, with three wins and two draws from their five outings. They’ll take confidence from the fact that Chelsea aren’t in their best moment with back-to-back defeats on the road, which is something that Lincoln can look to take advantage of.

Lincoln claimed a 1-0 win over Burton on the road to set up this tie against Chelsea, which is a real chance for the Imps to build on their early-season momentum and claim the scalp of one of the biggest sides in English football.

🔵 Chelsea Seek Convincing Response After Back-to-Back Defeats

It’s been a bit messy at Chelsea over the last few weeks. It can look like it’s always messy at Chelsea from the outside looking in, but the Blues have managed to find real consistency over the last six months, which has just unravelled a little recently with back-to-back defeats against Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

The manner of those defeats will be what frustrates Maresca the most. Both losses were of Chelsea’s own making; it was a story of mistakes in Munich followed by a tale of petulance in Manchester - both issues that Chelsea have been facing since the new ownership arrived and instilled a philosophy based around youth.

Chelsea will make changes here, but it would be a real disaster if Chelsea were to come away with anything other than a convincing win. This is a trophy that Chelsea can win; it would be a real disappointment if they were to crash out at this early stage against League One opponents.
