📂 Macclesfield v Brentford Cheat Sheet
📈 Macclesfield v Brentford Form & Stats
Macclesfield’s win over Crystal Palace in the last round of the FA Cup was historic, and has given them real confidence in their domestic campaign which is evident from their displays since that cup success. They come into this game having won four of their last five games in the National League North - so confidence shouldn’t be lacking for the home side, despite facing off against Premier League opponents once again.
Macclesfield’s home form has been particularly impressive in the National League North this term. They’ve lost just three of their 16 home matches, which is one of the strongest home records in the division. Those metrics suggest that Macclesfield can cause Brentford problems at times in this game, I expect them to be as competitive as they were against Crystal Palace - meaning that Brentford will have to be at their best to progress.
I’ve been really impressed by Keith Andrews, who has managed to prove me and many others wrong with the direction he’s taken this Brentford side in. The Bees’ recent performances have been particularly impressive, with the West London side avoiding defeat against Aston Villa, Newcastle and Arsenal across their last three Premier League matches - winning two of those games.
One small concern for Keith Andrews here may be Brentford’s away record. They have managed to put this right recently with wins on the road against Aston Villa and Newcastle, but their away form has generally been quite poor all season, with eight defeats from their 13 away matches and notably no draws.
📔 Macclesfield v Brentford Formation & Team News
Macclesfield are likely to mirror the approach that they took in the last round of the cup against Palace, which is to line up in a 4-4-2 and play a pragmatic game with the aim of punishing mistakes that Brentford make through quick transitions.
Macclesfield’s midfield was particularly impressive against Palace in the last round, with Paul Dawson getting on the scoresheet from deep. I think this will be where their best chance of controlling the game will come from, if they can unsettle Brentford in the middle of the park, it will allow them to have a foothold in the game.
Brentford should continue with their 4-2-3-1 shape, which Keith Andrews opts for when he knows that Brentford will have most of the ball in a game. Brentford have set up with a 5-3-2 shape at times this term, but this tends to be in games where Brentford are the underdogs and would be playing in transition themselves.
I’d keep an eye on Romelle Donovan if he gets the nod to start here. I was impressed with him in the last round and he has a particular strength when it comes to carrying the ball and taking on his man, which is an essential trait when looking to find a way through a low block.
