📈 Man United v Man City Form & Tactics

Michael Carrick has been appointed as interim head coach until the end of the season at Man United, reportedly beating Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the role, with Carrick favoured due to his lower demands and understanding that this is a temporary role.

Carrick is a solid coach and should be able to keep things steady until the end of the season. His Middlesbrough side were always organised and tough to beat, he was very harshly sacked from that role after lifting Middlesbrough away from danger when he first joined the club.

It’ll be tough for Carrick to change too much or completely overhaul the side at this stage of the campaign, especially seeing as he’s unlikely to be given any new signings in the January transfer window.

Man City easily saw off Exeter and Newcastle in the cup competitions in the build up to this match, and now have ground to make up in the title race, with six points sitting between them and Arsenal. The next few weeks feel really important in the title race, Arsenal face Man United soon, and City could put them under real pressure in that game with all three points here.

Guardiola is definitely more comfortable with his side than he was at this stage last season. City haven’t lost in any competition since their 2-0 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League back on the 25th November. They’ve only drawn three games since that defeat, winning the other 10 matches.

📔 Man United v Man City Formation & Team News

Michael Carrick’s most used formation while he was at Middlesbrough was a 4-2-3-1 shape, which is what we can expect Man United to line up with here. Darren Fletcher also used this shape for his two games in charge, so the players are familiar with it and shouldn’t be too concerned with the responsibilities of this shape.

A small concern for United is that these players have been asked to play in a 3-4-3 shape for the better part of a year under Ruben Amorim, so the squad isn’t perfectly designed for the system that Carrick will want to play. This may end up being a blessing in disguise for players like Kobbie Mainoo, who is sure to be considered more by Carrick than he was by Amorim.

Amad and Mbeumo are heading back to Carrington having exited AFCON with their respective nations, though it would be a surprise to see either start here having been away from the club for over a month. Mazraoui remains on AFCON duty, with Morocco reaching the final of the competition.

Man City set up in a 4-1-4-1 shape, which has become effective again due to the important role of Nico Gonzalez. Rodri is back fit now, but Gonzalez may still start here with how impressive he’s been for City this season in acting as that anchor in front of the back four. O’Reilly played in this role against Newcastle last time out and also showed promise, so Pep has a variety of succession plans for when Rodri does eventually move on.

New signing Antoine Semenyo has already made City more clinical in the final third, having scored in both of his games for Guardiola’s side so far. City sometimes rely too much on Haaland for their goals, so having someone with the finishing ability of Semenyo in the side could prove invaluable when it comes to the pressure end of the season.

It’s also worth noting that City are currently without Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, meaning that we are likely to see a centre back pairing of Max Alleyne and Khusanov - though both have shown real promise despite their relative inexperience at this level.

📊 Man United v Man City Key Stats

  • Man United have won just one of their last five matches across all competitions, failing to beat Leeds, Burnley, Brighton and Wolves in this period.

  • Man City’s latest signing, Antoine Semenyo, has scored in each of his two starts for the club.

  • Michael Carrick will take charge of his first game as interim Man United boss here.

  • Pep Guardiola’s side are six points behind Arsenal in the title race, they can cut that gap to three before Arsenal head to Forest later in the day.
