Man United v FC Copenhagen
📅
Date: Tuesday 24th October
🏆
Competition: Champions League
⏰
Kick off: 20:00
📺
Watch Live: TNT Sports 2
Man United’s Champions League campaign could hardly have gotten off to a worse start, with Erik ten Hag’s men having lost both of their opening games. Tonight’s fixture therefore is a must-win affair, with anything less than all three points leaving them on the brink of another group stage exit.
United struggled to a 2-1 win away at Sheffield United over the weekend, and are still dealing with a raft of injuries, so this is likely to be another tough affair. Copenhagen have shown themselves to be no mugs so far this season, being unlucky to have only taken one point.
Galatasaray came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home with the Danish side, whilst Bayern Munich required a late Mathys Tel strike to snatch the three points after also falling behind.
In their last Champions League endeavour in 2021/22, United lost away from home to Young Boys, and managed only a draw at home, and in 2020/21 they lost away from home to Başakşehir, so their record against teams from Pot 4 has not been what you would expect in recent seasons.
Of course, these games were by no means must-win games, but it does demonstrate that no games can be taken for granted in this competition.
This added pressure makes this a much easier game to tackle from a betting perspective, as games against Champions League minnows can often feature heavy rotation and introduce plenty of uncertainty, so why not get involved in our Man United v FC Copenhagen bet builder?

Erik ten Hag’s side showing little improvement
After a difficult first season finished with Champions League qualification, there was some optimism heading into Erik ten Hag’s second season.
However, another sluggish start, coupled with glaring holes in the squad becoming more apparent as the season has gone on has shown that United’s third place finish was much less to do with their own performance and more down to the woeful seasons of Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea respectively.
After the Galatasaray defeat, United were staring down the barrel of a second run of three consecutive losses already this season, before Scott McTominay snatched the win at the death against Brentford, with two goals in added time to turn the game on its head.
Any hopes of this win lifting the team were mostly dashed by another uninspiring showing at Bramall Lane on Saturday night, though that win has made it two in a row for the Red Devils. Another one here would be the first time all season they have won three in a row.
Barring their 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at home and their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Galatasaray, United have generally beaten the teams you would expect them to beat and lost to the teams you would expect them to lose to.
The other teams to beat them this season have been Spurs, Arsenal, Brighton and Bayern Munich, all of which are clearly better sides so far this season.
That bodes well for the Red Devils tonight, but with ten Hag’s men not managing to win by more than a single goal all season, we should not be expecting a thrashing here, which is something to bear in mind when planning your Man United v FC Copenhagen bet builder.
Man United team news
United’s defence is becoming a real problem area, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia all absent here.
Casemiro is injured anyway, so his suspension following his red card in United’s last European outing is meaningless, but this leaves United extremely vulnerable.
Fortunately, Raphael Varane made his return at the weekend, although it was a 6-minute cameo, so whether he can start here is not yet known. It is also hoped that Sergio Reguilon will have recovered from his hamstring strain and can return to the lineup.
If neither Varane or Reguilon are fit to start though, they are likely to line up with the same makeshift backline as they did against Sheffield United, with Victor Lindelöf at left-back, Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire in centre-back, and the club’s one fully fit full-back, Diogo Dalot on the right.
Scott McTominay has three goals in two games and will likely partner Sofyan Amrabat, whilst the same front four from the weekend will more than likely start this one also.
That means a three of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Antony in behind Rasmus Højlund up front.
Surprise package Copenhagen unlikely to roll over
The Danish champions have been desperately unlucky so far in the Champions League, taking the lead in both ties but notching only one point.
They have been far from outclassed in these games, conceding the ball to their opponents but defending hard and hitting them on the counter where possible.
They have accumulated 18 shots across their two fixtures, and only narrowly lost the xG battle with Bayern Munich, the German side managing 0.88 to the Danes’ 0.87.
As much as this is a must-win game for United, this is a must-not-lose game for the Danish side, with the possibility of progression, either to the Round of 16 or the Europa League, on the line. A loss here would make it tough, but a draw would put them in a fantastic spot with two home games to come in their final three.
They have made a strong start domestically, sitting in first place, a point ahead of Silkeborg and Brøndby, and made a winning return from the international break when they beat Vejle Boldklub 2-1 at home on Saturday.
With United’s defence looking leaky, the Danes will surely fancy their chances of scoring here, having scored in both games so far.
FC Copenhagen team news
FC Copenhagen will be without left-back Birger Meling here after he picked up an injury during their 2-1 win over Vejle last weekend, but his replacement Christian Sørenson came on and provided an assist, so they will not be too concerned with this absence.
Right back Elias Jelert is back after his one game suspension following his red card against Galatasaray, while William Clem and Nicolai Boilesen will also be out.
Aside from that it should be business as usual for the Danes, with the remainder of their squad fully fit.
We may also be treated to the sight of a Rooney playing at Old Trafford again, with 17-year-old Swedish right-winger Roony Bardghji having been seeing more and more minutes as the season has progressed, though his Champions League minutes so far have been from the bench.
Another possible storyline for the night seems unlikely to provide any interest however, with younger brother of Rasmus, Oscar Højlund available but unlikely to feature. He has seen just a single minute of competitive action for FC Copenhagen since August 26.

⚽ Both teams to score
📈
Odds: 1.87
United have five Champions League goals already, by far the most of any side in fourth place in any of the eight groups. They are surely likely to continue their scoring streak here, against the weakest side in the group.
However, Copenhagen are not likely to take this lying down, having scored three goals in two games themselves, and shown their danger on the counter. With United sure to either have a makeshift backline or a not fully match-fit backline, the threat of the counter is even stronger today.
United have kept just three clean sheets all season, including a fortunate 1-0 win over Wolves, 1-0 away against Burnley, and a comfortable 3-0 win against a heavily rotated Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. With such a poor defensive track record so far this season, this is way too good of a price to turn down for any Man United v FC Copenhagen bet builders.

🎯 Rasmus Højlund to have 1+ shots on target
📈
Odds: 1.25
Though yet to score in the Premier League, Rasmus Højlund has scored in both Champions League games so far this season.
The Danish forward has managed at least one shot on target in four of his seven starts and has five shots on target in his last four starts in all competitions, only failing to notch a single one in the game against Brentford.
Højlund has had at least two shots in every game he has started for United and has shown himself to be capable of getting himself a sight of goal even in games where he has had as few as 11 touches, such as the Sheffield United game at the weekend, where he still managed two shots on target.

🚩 Over 6.5 Man United corners
📈
Odds: 1.60
In 12 games this season, United have reached this line in seven games. Three of the games in which they did not do so were defeats to Tottenham, Arsenal and Bayern Munich, three games in which the Red Devils were generally outclassed and did not see much of the ball.
Their Danish opponents will be happy to see United on the ball, and with their solid defensive structure, plus a lack of creativity between the lines for the hosts, there are likely to be plenty of hopeful crosses, which should generate plenty of corners. The only game this season in which they had more of the ball but did not have over 6.5 corners was last time out against Sheffield United.
United had nine corners against Galatasaray, and Copenhagen have conceded plenty of corners in Europe this season, conceding nine against Galatasaray and eight against Bayern Munich. All in all, this looks to be very generously priced at 1.60, and is worth considering for your Man United v FC Copenhagen bet builder.

🟨 Over 1.5 FC Copenhagen cards
📈
Odds: 1.33
The Danish side have not been afraid to get stuck in so far in this Champions League group stage, and with them needing to try and get a result tonight, we should expect more of the same.
Against Galatasaray they received four cards, including two yellows for Elias Jelert which saw him sent off and suspended for the game against Bayern last time out.
They managed to keep 11 men on the field against Bayern, but still picked up three cards, even with Bayern having significantly less of the possession than Galatasaray did.
With United’s creativity lacking, any chances to counter may be the biggest threat to Copenhagen’s goal, and the last two games have shown the Danes are not afraid to take a booking for the team in these situations. Them not to receive at least two cards would be very surprising.

⚽ Both teams to score
📈
Odds: 1.87
Man United have conceded at least 0.9xG in every game they have played in the Premier League and the Champions League this season, showcasing their defensive struggles.
Copenhagen have managed to put up just under 1xG against Bayern Munich, and scored twice against Galatasaray, so they will certainly fancy their chances of finding the net at least once here.

🎯 Rasmus Højlund to have 1+ shots on target
📈
Odds: 1.25
Rasmus Højlund has not failed to score yet in the Champions League, and United will see plenty of the ball. He will also surely be extra motivated to score against his boyhood club, especially with his younger brother likely to be on the bench for Copenhagen.
He will have chances, that much is near guaranteed, and so far, he has proved effective in at least testing the goalkeeper with them, especially at Champions League level.

🚩 Over 7.5 Man United corners
📈
Odds: 2.10
Copenhagen have conceded plenty of corners so far this campaign, with nine against Galatasaray and eight against Bayern Munich.
All the games in which United have crossed this line have seen them dominate possession, which is likely to occur again tonight. All five have also been games at home, which bodes well for reaching this line tonight, and the price of 2.10 is simply too good to turn down.

🟨 Over 2.5 FC Copenhagen cards
📈
Odds: 2.20
Copenhagen have seen at least three cards in both Champions League games so far, and there is every possibility this will continue tonight.
Galatasaray also saw three players booked when they visited Old Trafford last weekend, and with both sides needing a result here to give them a reasonable chance to progress, tempers flaring up at some point would not be surprising.
The game will be officiated by Marco Guida, a referee known to brandish plenty of cards. He is averaging over 4.5 per game across his career. With this in mind, and considering Copenhagen’s track record this season, this is an excellent value pick.
