Man United v Fulham
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 2nd March at 16:30
🏆
Competition: FA Cup
Sunday’s 2nd offering of FA Cup action sees a struggling Manchester United side welcome Fulham to Old Trafford with this competition now crucial to Ruben Amorim tasting some sort of success in his first few months in charge of the Red Devils.
Manchester United have struggled with injuries to key players in recent weeks including Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo, but a 3-2 win against Ipswich last time out despite being reduced to 10 men will offer some encouragement amongst a whole host of on and off the field issues.
Fulham will be eyeing up domestic success themselves following a run of 4 wins from their last 5 games across all competitions. Marco Silva’s side are still within an outside chance of qualifying for Europe with the Cottagers sitting just 5 points behind Manchester City in the Premier League.
Fulham will be hoping to put right their 2 previous losses to Manchester United in the Premier League this season, both by 1-0 scorelines.
⭐ Man United v Fulham Best Bet
1 of Manchester United’s biggest problems this season has been finding solutions in the attacking third, the injury to Amad Diallo, ruling him out for the season, has worsened this issue with neither Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee making a solid claim for the striker position. Amorim has played both Hojlund and Zirkzee in recent weeks to compensate for the lack of attacking options but providing service to the pair has proved difficult.
The pressure of playing at Old Trafford appears to weigh particularly heavily on this group of players, further contributing to the lack of sustained attacking pressure Manchester United are able to force onto the opposition. They’ve scored 20 goals across their 14 games at Old Trafford this season, which isn’t the most alarming record but is quite concerning when considering that 9 of these goals have come against promoted sides in the Premier League.
Fulham are 1 of the most organised sides in the Premier League as evidenced by the fact that Marco Silva’s side have conceded just 15 goals across their 13 away games in the Premier League this season. They managed to deny Manchester United a first half goal in both meetings with the Red Devils in the Premier League this season and have kept a first half clean sheet in 54% of their games this season. In the recent Premier League meeting between the sides at Craven Cottage, United only generated an xG of 0.25.
By contrast, Manchester United usually leave it quite late to breach the opposition backline with Ruben Amorim’s side failing to score in 64% of the first halves of their games at Old Trafford this season. They’re only averaging 0.41 goals per first half in the Premier League this campaign and Fulham’s excellent organisation should be able to shut them out in the first half again.
🟢 Man United v Fulham #WhatOddsPaddy Tip
Bruno Fernandes is easily Manchester United’s biggest threat in front of goal, he’s averaging 0.82 shots on target per 90 in the Premier League this season and found the target 3 times in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Fulham on the opening day of the season.
Jimenez is averaging 1.42 shots on target per 90 in the Premier League this season whilst Adama Traore offers a constant threat to the opposition with his pace and power bound to cause an unsettled Manchester United backline problems, he’s averaging 0.72 shots on target per 90 and had 3 shots in Fulham’s last trip to Old Trafford.
Fulham are averaging 4.92 corners per game away from home in the Premier League, they covered this line in their last visit to Old Trafford and fell just 1 short in the recent meeting between the sides at Craven Cottage. Manchester United had seven corners in that meeting at Old Trafford and are averaging 5.50 corners per game at home in the Premier League this campaign.
Fulham are averaging 2.18 cards per game in the Premier League this season, only 6 sides have collected more cautions than the Cottagers in the English top-flight this season. Manchester United have been shown 62 yellow cards in the Premier League this season (2.29 per game), both sides received 2+ cards in the meeting between these sides on the opening day of the season.
👕 Man United v Fulham Predicted XI
🔍 Man United v Fulham Players to Watch
⚪ Sasa Lukic
Sasa Lukic has committed 49 fouls across his 22 Premier League appearances this season (2.53 per 90). He’s an incredibly combative midfielder who Marco Silva trusts in the middle of the park, usually alongside Sander Berge. These players form a duo that is really hard for opposition sides to cut through, often forcing teams down the wings where Fulham set traps to win the ball back before springing forward on the counter. Lukic has committed a foul in each of his last 5 domestic appearances and will be up against Manuel Ugarte who is averaging 1.78 fouls won per 90 in the Premier League this season.
⚪ Alex Iwobi
Alex Iwobi has had his best season in the Premier League when it comes to output. The 28-year-old has registered 10 goal contributions across his 27 Premier League appearances this season which is already 2 more than he managed in the entirety of the last campaign.
This improvement in terms of tangible numbers has also had an impact on his shot numbers, he’s averaging 2.07 shots per 90 in the Premier League this season and had 2 shots in the recent meeting between the sides at Craven Cottage.

💻 Man United v Fulham Form and Tactics
Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system hasn’t exactly been well received by players, fans or the media with an outcry from some sections of supporters for Amorim to change his tactical set up to better suit some of the players he’s currently working with. He’s been forced into tweaking it anyway due to injuries and the departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony, leaving United a bit light in forward areas. To compensate for the lack of wide attacking options, Amorim has opted to deploy a 3-5-2 shape with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee playing up front together, but this has still presented problems for the former Sporting manager who is struggling to get his ideas across to this crop of United players.
The organisation that Marco Silva has instilled in this Fulham side can only be admired, they’ve shifted away from the 4-4-2 shape they initially started the season with to move to a similar shape to Manchester United in a 3-4-3 shape with the left hand side of Calvin Bassey, Antonee Robinson and Alex Iwobi proving particularly effective in unlocking opposition backlines. Robinson has registered 10 assists in the Premier League this season whilst Iwobi has recorded 10 goal contributions (7 goals, 3 assists) suggesting that the left hand side will be 1 for Manchester United to keep an eye on.
These sides have already faced off twice in the Premier League this season with both games narrowly going the way of Manchester United in 1-0 victories at Old Trafford and Craven Cottage. The 2nd meeting in particular was really cagey, Manchester United didn’t even manage a shot until the latter stages of the first half and only generated an xG of 0.25 in victory, testament to Fulham’s defensive resilience which was only undone by a long range deflected effort from Lisandro Martinez.
Manchester United have seen off Arsenal and Leicester to reach this stage of the FA Cup whilst Fulham have come out on top against Wigan and Watford. Both sides will see this trophy as a real opportunity for different reasons, it can act as an avenue into Europe for Manchester United as it did last season and can sweeten Fulham’s campaign with the West London side yet to win a major trophy in their history.
