🔵 Gil Azzurri to Assert Themselves at the Top
Following the permanent departure of Victor Osimhen for a fee just shy of £65 million, Napoli have wisely reinvested the money into strengthening their squad, making shrewd signings to improve squad depth and allow them to compete on multiple fronts this season.
In attack, highly-rated Dutch winger Noa Lang has joined from PSV, bringing flair on the flank, while Lorenzo Lucca has arrived from Udinese to provide cover for Romelu Lukaku, who is sidelined with a thigh injury to start the season. Lucca proved his quality last season with 12 Serie A goals, showing he can be a reliable option for Antonio Conte to call upon.
Sam Beukema, a key player for Bologna last season, has been added to provide depth at the back, while Miguel Gutierrez has joined from Girona to challenge for a starting full-back spot. These smart reinforcements leave Napoli well-equipped to retain their Scudetto.
🔴 Cagliari Hanging on by a Thread
Following their promotion from Serie B in the 2022/23 campaign, Cagliari have managed to retain their place in Serie A, though not in convincing fashion. The Rossoblu secured safety by just one point in the 23/24 campaign, finishing with a final tally of just 36 points.
Last season, they managed exactly the same number of points, although that saw them secure 15th, five points above the drop zone. Having lost 20 league matches in the previous campaign, only Monza and Verona suffered more defeats than Cagliari. Away form was especially concerning, as they collected just 14 points from 19 matches, suffering 11 losses on their travels.
After taking over from Davide Nicola as manager, Fabio Pisacane has a tough job on his hands of securing survival once again for Cagliari. With little sign of improvement, it seems unlikely that his side will surpass last season’s tally, leaving relegation a very real possibility.
📊 Napoli v Cagliari H2H
Napoli beat Cagliari in both head-to-head meetings last season, by an aggregate score of 6-0. It finished 2-0 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, and 4-0 in the reverse.
The team from Naples have won five of these last eight matchups with Cagliari, with the remaining three ending in draws.
