🟠 Underway in the Gasperini Era
Roma were impressive against Bologna last time out, and the 1-0 scoreline flattered the visitors. Bryan Cristante struck the post after 23 minutes, getting his head on a pinpoint Matias Soule set-piece, but it was Wesley on his debut who scored the first goal of Roma’s league campaign under Gasperini. Shortly after, Manu Kone spurned a chance worth 0.71 xG, which would have doubled the lead.
But in the end, that didn’t matter too much. Roma were able to keep Bologna out despite a flurry of late attempts - the visitors were restricted to a total of 0.58 xG from ten shots. It was an overall convincing win for the Romans, who were without both Leon Bailey and Lorenzo Pellegrini, while Paulo Dybala was fit enough only for a 20-minute appearance from the bench. With key personnel still to return, Roma will only expect to grow stronger.
🔵 Pisa Aiming for More Than Just Survival
After guiding Pisa back into the Italian top flight, Filippo Inzaghi has stepped aside to manage Palermo, with Alberto Gilardino taking over as head coach for his second senior managerial role. Importantly, though, Gilardino has experience in guiding a newly-promoted side to safety in Serie A. At Genoa, he secured promotion to the Italian top flight for the 23/24 campaign and then achieved a respectable 11th-place finish in their first season back.
However, Gilardino was sacked in the preceding season, with Genoa languishing at the bottom of the table in November. The Italian remains relatively unproven at the highest level, but he has opted for a system very similar to his predecessor, allowing the squad to transition smoothly. His side impressed in their opening fixture against Atalanta, playing with real confidenc,e which suggests they can compete in the top flight.
📊 Pisa v Roma H2H
The last time these two sides met was back in 1991 - Roma came out victorious in that game, but Pisa pulled off a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture.
