Kevin De Bruyne’s homecoming to the Etihad in the Champions League last time out didn’t quite go to plan, as Napoli found themselves reduced to ten men after just 21 minutes, and the Belgian was sacrificed to make way for an additional defender.

De Bruyne watched from the bench as Napoli endured attack after attack, eventually losing the game 2-0. Sporting had a much more positive experience on their return to European football, as they beat Kairat Almaty 4-1 to get off to the perfect start.

Sporting (+2) Handicap

Napoli were dealt their first league loss of the season against AC Milan on Sunday night, losing 2-1 despite Pervis Estupinan receiving a red card after 57 minutes. Gli Azzurri dominated in the final 30 minutes, but were unable to find the equaliser - Mike Maignan deserves immense credit for making six saves.

Prior to that match, Napoli had won four out of four Serie A matches, but they were a relatively easy set of opening fixtures, and cracks were starting to appear for Antonio Conte’s side. Newly-promoted Pisa were able to generate 2.61 xG from 15 shots, so were unfortunate to leave the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium with nothing to show for it, given that Napoli scored three times from just 1.08 xG.

Prior to that game, Man City cruised to a 2-0 victory over Napoli in the Champions League, helped by an early red card for Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Both Teams to Score

Napoli’s loss against AC Milan means they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last four matches, conceding a total of seven goals in that time. Meanwhile, Sporting have scored in every game in the Portuguese top flight so far, averaging 2.7 goals scored per game.

They were dominant against Kairat in round one of the Champions League, and managed to rack up 3.81 xG from which they scored four goals. Despite wasting five big chances and missing a penalty, the hosts were still able to cruise to a comfortable victory.

However, Napoli’s imperious home record at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium last season was key to helping them secure their first domestic title since 1990. Gli Azzurri failed to score in just two of their 19 home matches in the league. Conte’s side did benefit from having no European fixtures to contend with - their full focus was on domestic proceedings.

Luis Suarez to have 1+ Shots on Target

Luis Suarez scored his fifth goal of the season against Estoril last time out, adapting well to life in the Portuguese top flight. The Colombian international scored 27 goals in the Spanish second division last season, helping Almeria to the promotion playoffs, where they were unsuccessful.

Still, the 27-year-old can take pride from the fact he was the top scorer in the division, and deserved his £22 million move to the Portuguese champions. While he did score 27 goals, he also missed 27 big chances, highlighting how Suarez does have a knack for popping up in dangerous positions.

He can also be ruthless on his day - Suarez stole the headlines during the international break after he scored four goals against Venezuela in a World Cup qualifying match. Suarez is averaging 4.81 shots per 90 since joining Sporting, and will hope to make an impact in the final third.

Scott McTominay to have 2+ Shots

Scott McTominay managed just one shot against AC Milan last weekend, while he also failed to hit this mark against Man City at the Etihad. However, both of those were tough away matches against in-form teams. The Scottish international has generally performed much better on home turf and will look forward to an easier matchup on paper against Sporting Lisbon.

McTominay has landed this selection in each of his last nine matches on home turf, scoring five goals in that time. In fact, the former Man United man had an average of 3.05 shots per 90 last season in Naples, landing this bet in 15 out of 16 home matches in Serie A, including against the likes of Inter Milan and Atalanta. He was an incredibly consistent performer on home turf, and hopes to maintain that level of output in the Champions League.

📈 Napoli v Sporting Form & Tactics

It took just three minutes for Alexis Saelemaekers to open the scoring against Napoli on Sunday night, as Christian Pulisic played a pivotal role in setting him up. The American international then doubled the scoreline after 31 minutes, finishing off an intricate move from The Rossoneri.

With the game drifting away, Napoli were offered a lifeline just before the hour mark, as Pervis Estupinan conceded a penalty and was sent off. Kevin De Bruyne converted from the spot, but his side were unable to breach AC Milan’s defences again and succumbed to their first loss of the campaign.

AC Milan failed to register a single shot in the second period at the San Siro, while the visitors racked up 13 shots worth 2.15 xG to no avail.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute through Luis Suarez, Sporting were able to grind out the victory against Estoril last time out, meaning they have started strongly in their domestic title defence. However, Benfica and Porto have also both started equally as well, and currently have their unbeaten records intact. Sporting are going to have to be efficient this season as they aim to compete on multiple fronts.

📔 Napoli v Sporting Formation & Team News

Napoli

Antonio Conte will have much more of a selection headache for this match, as his captain, Di Lorenzo, is suspended. Additionally, Leonardo Spinnazola, Alessandro Buongiorno and Amir Rrahmani, three more key defensive players, all missed the match against AC Milan this weekend, so it is uncertain whether they will be available for selection midweek.

Romelu Lukaku remains sidelined with a serious thigh injury, which he picked up in pre-season, meaning Rasmus Hojlund is set to lead the line in the Champions League once again.

Sporting

Luckily for Sporting, they currently have a very limited injury list - only long-term absentees Nuno Santos and Daniel Braganca are out of contention to start here, meaning we are likely to get a similar lineup to that which won against Kairat.

Captain Morten Hjulmand, who was strongly linked with a move to Man United over the summer, is expected to partner summer signing Giorgi Kochorashvili in midfield. Francisco Trincao has been deployed centrally this season so far, with the tricky Geovany Quenda deployed out wide. Following the departure of Viktor Gyokores and Conrad Harder over the summer for a combined fee of around £70 million, it was expected that Sporting would struggle in the final third, but the goals have continued to flow.
