One of the standout fixtures of the weekend takes place at St James’ Park this Sunday, as Manchester City travel up to the North East to face Newcastle. A raucous atmosphere is expected on the Tyne, with the fans becoming a twelfth man turning the stadium into an absolute cauldron. This will no doubt make it tough for City; they have enough quality and know how to navigate through this match successfully in my opinion though. The Magpies have made a solid beginning to their season picking up four points and have yet to concede a goal, clearly demonstrating they’ve started just how they mean to go on! On the other hand, the Citizens have made an even better start, collecting all six points on offer so far. A 2-0 win away to West Ham and a comfortable 4-0 victory at home to Bournemouth sees them top of the current standings.

Manchester City to Win
The recent H2H record Manchester City hold against Newcastle is extremely conclusive. In the last 5 League meetings, they’ve won 20-3 on aggregate score, completely dominating and winning on each occasion. Things won’t be quite as easy this weekend against this rejuvenated Newcastle team. I believe they’ll have more than enough in the tank though to take all three points back to Manchester.
In this current City squad there is a plethora of talent in every single position. The strength in depth is something they possess that their opponents do not. This may count for a lot come matchday, even if we see key players pick up injuries for example, there is just cover everywhere. In an attacking sense the away side have players such as Grealish, Foden, Mahrez, Alvarez, the list just goes on. So, whatever personnel is utilised by Pep, the same outcome is often achieved.
If we then take a look into the home sides attacking options, we see Callum Wilson as the clear number one pick up front. Chris Wood tends to play second fiddle and we’ve only seen him hit the back twice since joining from Burnley. In terms of other potential ‘game changing’ players, I just don’t see any. Jacob Murphy or Sean Longstaff can often be given minutes as substitutes but are not seen to be anywhere near as impactful as what the away side’s bench can provide.
City remain unbeaten in their previous 19 Premier League away matches, only dropping points in a handful of these. This run is set to continue to 20 games here and I’m backing the blues to beat the barcoders here.

Prediction: Manchester City to Win
Kevin De Bruyne to Score or Assist
The Belgian midfield maestro is often referred to as one of the best players out there in world football. There are a number of reasons behind this, but in the main, it’s the sublime numbers this man puts up season after season in terms of goals and assists. We have already seen this form continue in the current campaign, having notched versus Bournemouth last week to begin with. He also secured an assist in both that match up and the away match at West Ham on the opening day. The magnificent link up play with Erling Haaland is something we are only just beginning to see. The wonderful through ball played to the Norwegian as he slotted home was simply magical. This partnership I believe can be something truly special, they are only just beginning to show us what they can do at this current moment. However as time moves on, I imagine De Bruyne will become accustomed to way in which Haaland plays, meaning even more assists are likely to come his way!
Since joining the club in 2015, KDB has shot up the assist charts and now sits in 8th in the all-time top Premier League assists table, a simply incredible achievement. In total, he’s had a ginormous 88 assists as he attempts to surpass the records of legendary players such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and David Silva. There’s every chance 88 becomes 89 this weekend and I can easily see De Bruyne assisting in this game. The added bonus for us here is that KDB will be on corners and free kick duty through giving us further chances of securing an assist here.
Not only the assists have been incredible but the recent goal record has also been sensational. He was top club scorer in the 21/22 Premier League season, scoring 15 goals in the process, a brilliant return.
He’ll be hoping to dominate the match here, in what will be a potentially difficult fixture for City. De Bruyne’s world-class quality can shine through here and I’m backing him to score or assist!

Prediction: Kevin De Bruyne to Score or Assist
Over 5.5 Manchester City Corners
Although I’m anticipating City to gain a victory in the match, I believe the away side will encounter a stern test in facing Newcastle on Sunday. Taking this into account, I think it may well take something special to break through the solid home back line. Both teams are yet to concede a goal, which is part of my reasoning of why I believe the Citizens will continually have to pressure the home defence to take a lead in this game. In response to this, City to have 6+ corners seems a decent pick for the bet builder. As they hunt from the off, they’ll likely be pushing forward from minute one and in turn will pick up a number of corners in attack.
Last season, the Citizens topped the corner statistic charts away from home, averaging 7.74 corners per game. If the home side can keep them at bay, or at least stay within one goal then I really see this bet being a winning one. Another angle in for us here is that if Newcastle take a lead, then we are really going to see City bomb forward in attack as they’ll be hoping to take all three points. This will certainly lead to a higher number of corners for the away side as they’ll be attacking in numbers and take added risks to achieve this. This is entirely possible as we’ve seen a vast improvement in Eddie Howe’s side since he has taken over and they cannot be discounted at this stage.

Prediction: Over 5.5 Manchester City Corners
Nathan Ake to have 1+ Shot
In a game where I’m expecting City to rack up a number of corners, I feel 1+ shot for Nathan Ake is more than achievable at a tasty price of 7/5. The most likely way in which we will see Ake take a shot within this match is from a set piece situation. His aerial presence is there for us all to see and in the opening 2 matches, we have seen 1+ shot land on both occasions. With Laporte still side-lined, this is another opportunity for the Dutchman to put down a marker and solidify his starting berth in the XI. He’s set to partner Ruben Dias at the heart of the defence once more, after putting in two strong performances.
I always look for trends of course when compiling a bet builder and this is the reason behind this selection. As previously mentioned, the 100% record for this bet so far this season certainly had a bearing here. In total, the away side have had 23 shots in the opening two games and in a game that they are likely to dominate for extended periods of play, there are bound to be chances coming his way. If he can manage to win just one aerial duel in an attacking situation then it is safe to say this will be enough to beat home.
Another reason behind all of this is the fact that Ake will be keen to impress manager Pep Guardiola. Chances to start have not come often so far in his short career at City. However, with two superb performances under his belt, this game could yet be another pivotal moment in a sky blue shirt for him. Now starting to prove his worth in the starting eleven as a defender, we can certainly see him taking further risks in the final third in an attempt to secure his spot. If the game pans out how I see it then I believe we will have every chance of Ake attempting one shot. The shooting stats are there for us all to see and I cannot go against something that’s had success two games in a row so far!
In case we see Pep shuffle the pack on match day, I’d recommend switching Ake to Stones to take 1+ shot, who also has an excellent record of shots in past seasons.
