Over 1.5 Barcelona Goals

I struggle to see many sides stopping Barcelona from scoring at least two goals in the majority of their games this season. Their scoring power is relentless, and they’ve already shown that a few times this season, with their 6-0 win over Valencia last time out being particularly impressive.

Barcelona have scored 2+ goals in three of their four LaLiga matches this season. Only Rayo Vallecano stopped Barcelona from scoring twice in the early stages of this season, and I do think Newcastle will struggle to contain the pressure that this Barcelona frontline puts on opposition backlines.

Barcelona scored 102 goals across their 38 matches in LaLiga last season (2.68 per game). 50 of these goals came across their 19 away matches (2.63 per game), so they are just as proficient on the road as they are when being the home side.

Nick Woltemade to have 2+ Shots

I’m a big fan of Nick Woltemade. He's got the stature of Peter Crouch but somehow has the close control and dribbling ability of Messi.

He's one of the most unique players in Europe, and his debut would suggest that he will be a real threat for Newcastle in the Premier League and Champions League this season.

Woltemade had three shots against Wolves on his debut, with one of these efforts finding the back of the net as he headed home Jacob Murphy’s cross to record his first goal for the Magpies.

Woltemade scored 12 goals across his 17 starts in the Bundesliga last season, so he is perfectly capable of shouldering the goalscoring burden that Isak has left behind after making the move to Liverpool.

He had 49 shots across those starts (2.72 per 90), which is a shot volume that further indicates that he’s got a good chance of getting a few shots away here.

Raphinha to have 1+ Shot on Target

Raphinha was Barcelona’s best player in the Champions League last season but didn’t always get the credit he deserved, with Lamine Yamal often stealing the limelight.

That won’t be the case here with Yamal heavily rumoured to miss this game through injury, leaving Raphinha as Barcelona’s biggest threat from the wide areas.

Raphinha came off the bench to score twice against Valencia last time out, with the Brazilian having four shots in his 45-minute cameo.

He’s had 12 shots across his four appearances in LaLiga this season (3.94 per 90), which is a shot volume that gives him a great chance of finding the target here.

Raphinha scored 13 goals across his 14 appearances in the Champions League last season. He had 51 shots across these games (3.75 per 90) with 21 of these attempts finding the target (1.54 per 90).

Barcelona have averaged 7.80 shots on target per game across their opening four games of the LaLiga season.

Dan Burn to Commit 1+ Fouls

Dan Burn has committed five fouls across his four appearances in the Premier League this season (1.25 per 90).

He committed a foul against Wolves last time out and is set to face up against Robert Lewandowski here, who will cause him all sorts of problems.

Lewandowski has played limited minutes so far this season as he recovers from an injury, but he is expected to be fit enough for this game, having scored two goals from the bench against Valencia last time out.

Lewandowski was very good when it came to winning fouls last season. He won 39 fouls across his 34 appearances in LaLiga (1.31 per 90) and also averaged 2.01 fouls won per 90 across his 13 appearances in the Champions League.

Burn doesn’t face up against the quality of Lewandowski every week, and I can envisage him struggling at times with the Polish striker, which should lead to the 33-year-old committing at least one foul in this encounter.

Robert Lewandowski to Score Anytime

Lewandowski has been battling with an injury in the early parts of the season but should be clear to start here having come off the bench to score twice against Valencia last time out.

Even at the age of 37, Lewandowski is one of the most clinical and reliable strikers in Europe. He netted 42 goals across his 52 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season with 11 of these goals coming in 13 appearances in the Champions League - only Raphina scored more goals for Barcelona in Europe than Lewandowski last season.

Lewandowski seems to be getting better with age, he scored 33 goals in his first season at Barcelona with this tally dropping slightly to 26 the following campaign before shooting back up to 42 goals last year.

Sandro Tonali to be Shown a Card

Newcastle’s steely midfield is the best chance they’ve got of getting anything out of this game. Barcelona will be used to rough treatment by opposition sides, but they may not be familiar with the intensity and the relentlessness of Newcastle’s midfield trio.

Tonali has avoided a yellow card so far this season and has only committed two fouls across his four Premier League appearances. This is pretty surprising, seeing as Tonali is usually the deeper of the trio and covers a lot of ground.

These numbers should rise as the season progresses. Tonali received five yellow cards last season whilst averaging 1.27 fouls committed per 90.

He’ll be facing up against a Barcelona midfield who don’t really lose the ball that often - Hansi Flick’s side have averaged 70% possession across their opening four games of the LaLiga season, more than any other side.

Tonali’s specific battle here should be up against Dani Olmo. Olmo won 27 fouls across his 13 starts in LaLiga last season (2.00 per 90) and should prove to be a real handful for Tonali.

Pau Cubarsi to be Shown a Card

Cubarsi is one of the most talented centre-backs in Europe, having nailed down a starting spot at the age of just 18 in this Barcelona side. He made 56 appearances for Barcelona last season, which is experience that should prove to be invaluable throughout his career.

One of Cubarsi’s main strengths is his recovery speed. This allows Barcelona to play with a really high line; they were caught out by Inter with this high line in the semi-finals last season, but for the majority of the campaign, it was so effective with the attacking players that Barcelona had to punish opponents.

Cubarsi received three cards across his 29 LaLiga starts last season and also received two cautions and a red card in the Champions League last term. He’ll be up against Nick Woltemade here, who will be one of the more unique opponents than Cubrasi has had to face with his lanky frame and brilliant close control.

📈 Newcastle v Barcelona & Tactics

Newcastle recorded their first win of the season against Wolves last time out as they came away 1-0 winners at St James’ Park. It wasn’t the most convincing performance, but the result was all that really mattered to Eddie Howe with Newcastle not really affording to go another week without a positive result.

I anticipate that Newcastle will go with quite a defensive approach here. Going toe to toe with a side like Barcelona isn’t wise, as they will always be able to outscore a team like Newcastle.

Eddie Howe is the perfect man for these occasions. I remember the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal last season at St James’ Park, in which Howe set up his side perfectly, aided by an early goal in the game. I can see a similar setup from the Magpies here in which they look to exploit Barcelona’s high line with the speed of Gordon and Murphy.

Barcelona won’t regularly come up against a side as physical as Newcastle, so the Premier League side must use their roughness to their advantage here. Newcastle’s midfield trio of Tonali, Guimaraes, and Joelinton has long been the strongest part of the side, and they’ll all have to be on top form here if Newcastle are to get anything from the game.

Barcelona are my personal pick to win the Champions League this season. This is mainly due to the attacking quality, which looks to be unmatched across Europe.

Liverpool and PSG would certainly give Barcelona a run for their money in terms of attacking quality, but neither of those teams are set up as attacking-minded as Flick’s Barcelona.

They averaged over 2.0 goals per game in both the league and the Champions League last season. That type of scoring power is pretty much impossible to stop unless you get a huge slice of luck like Inter Milan did in the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.

It’s not just the attacking quality and relentlessness of Barcelona that convinces me; they have had absolute control in all four of the games they’ve played so far this season, averaging 70.8% possession and 7.80 shots on target per game.
