Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season when they travel to face Galatasaray on Tuesday evening. Arne Slot’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace last time out, thanks to a last-minute winner by Eddie Nketiah.

Galatasaray will be looking to amend themselves, having lost 5-1 on the opening matchday of the Champions League against a lively Frankfurt side.

These recommended Best Bet Builder Bookmakers are worth a look for the week's midweek Europa League action.

Over 0.5 Galatasaray Goals

Liverpool have played eight matches this season and have only managed to keep clean sheets in two of them. These clean sheets came against Burnley and Arsenal, but Arne Slot’s side have failed to keep the opposition out in each of their four games since those shutouts, conceding against Atletico Madrid, Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace.

These issues at the back are linked to a slight change in Liverpool’s overall style of play. Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving the club has left Liverpool without a solid rest defence, Trent has never been an excellent 1v1 defender but he was superb when it came to positioning in the final third to ensure that Liverpool didn’t face transitions regularly.

Liverpool lack this rest defence structure now with Kerkez and Frimpong/Bradley regularly leaving Konate and Van Dijk exposed at the back. Galatasaray can take advantage of Liverpool’s issues at the back and regularly find the back of the net at home. Galatasaray have won all three of their Super Lig games at home this season, scoring nine goals in the process - they netted 46 goals across their 18 home games last season (2.55 per game).

Liverpool GK to Make 2+ Saves

Alisson was the only reason that Liverpool were not 3-0 down by halftime against Crystal Palace over the weekend. The 32-year-old was forced into making five saves at Selhurst Park last time out and will have to be at his best here with the backline in front of him offering little protection at the moment.

Alisson’s save percentage has been well below his usual standard in the early stages of the season. He’s maintained a save percentage of just 56.2% in the opening weeks of the Premier League season - he maintained a save percentage of 72.9% across the entirety of last campaign, so he is performing slightly below his usual standard at the moment, but this is likely due to Liverpool's shaky defensive setup.

Alisson averaged 2.80 saves per 90 in the Premier League last season, with this average rising to 3.79 in the Champions League. Galatasaray lost 5-1 on Matchday 1 of the Champions League but still managed to force the Frankfurt keeper into making four saves.

Mo Salah to have 1+ Shots on Target

Salah hasn’t been at his sparkling best so far this season, but has still managed to register six goal contributions across his eight appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season (3 goals, 3 assists). This is Salah’s best attribute; he can be a passenger for the majority of a game before popping up with a crucial moment.

He registered two goal contributions in Liverpool’s opening Champions League game against Atletico Madrid, having six shots in that match, three of which managed to find the target. Salah was a consistent provider for Liverpool in the Champions League last season, registering seven goal contributions across his nine appearances in the competition whilst averaging 3.34 shots per 90 and 1.23 shots on target per 90.

Salah ranked second in the entirety of the Premier League for shots on target last season, only beaten by Erling Haaland. Remarkably, Salah has finished in the top five players for shots on target in the Premier League in each of the last eight seasons.

Gabriel Sara to Commit 1+ Fouls

Gabriel Sara plays in the middle of the park for Galatasaray and has committed nine fouls across his seven Super Lig appearances this season (1.70 per 90).

Sara committed nine fouls across his nine appearances in the Europa League last season (1.04 per 90) and will be in for a tough assignment here against Liverpool’s dynamic midfield. He also averaged 0.74 fouls committed per 90 across his 31 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig last season.

Sara’s main opponent is likely to be Florian Wirtz, who hasn’t quite been able to settle in a Liverpool shirt yet but was bright in the Champions League when it came to winning fouls last season. He averaged 0.94 fouls won per 90 across his nine appearances in the competition.

Sara will also have to contend with Ryan Gravenberch, who has been Liverpool’s brightest player so far this season and has a unique ability to get out of tight situations. He’s won six fouls across his five Premier League appearances so far this season (1.20 per 90).

Ibrahima Konate to Commit 2+ Fouls

Konate has had a really tough start to the season with several below-par performances so far, contributing to Liverpool keeping just two clean sheets so far this season.

He couldn’t handle Mateta at Selhurst Park last time out, contesting 14 duels and receiving a yellow card before being hooked by Arne Slot with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

There are rumours that Konate could be moving to Real Madrid at the end of the season, which may be affecting his performances and he’ll have another real test against Osimhen here.

Osimhen is just as physical as Mateta and will take encouragement from Konate’s shaky performance against the Palace striker last time out. Osimhen has won four fouls across just 213 minutes of action in the Turkish Super Lig this season (1.69 per 90).

Alexander Isak to have 2+ Shots on Target

Isak is slowly settling into this Liverpool side, I’ve seen brief moments of promise from the former Newcastle striker and I think he will be able to benefit from the volume of chances that Liverpool are able to create here.

Galatasaray conceded five shots on target in their opening game of the Champions League against Frankfurt with all of these shots on target ending up in the back of the net. Liverpool and Isak can punish Galatasaray to a similar degree, they’ll have to rely on their attacking ability here both their defensive structure severely lacking across the opening few weeks of the season.

I also think Isak will benefit from Hugo Ekitike alongside him, it’ll give him a platform to act as a true number nine and maintain a box presence while Ekitike is able to occupy space on the left-hand side and create chances for the record signing.

Isak scored and had two shots on target against Southampton on his second start for the club, he also found the target on Matchday 1 in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid.

Lucas Torreria to be Shown a Card

Torreria is one of the most aggressive players in this Galatasaray side which takes some doing seeing as the Turkish champions are quite a physical outfit overall, especially in these sort of games where they are underdogs.

Torreria has received two yellow cards across his seven appearances in the Turkish Super Lig for Galatasaray this season. He’s committed six fouls across these games which is quite a modest foul total to produce this early card record but it would suggest that he is quite rash with his challenges.

Torreria received three yellow cards across his nine appearances in the Europa League last season whilst averaging 1.06 fouls committed per 90. This is a similar pattern to his record so far this season which cements the suggestion that he is very reckless with his challenges, even if the volume isn’t the highest when compared to other defensive midfielders.

📈 Galatasaray v Liverpool Form & Tactics

Arne Slot was pretty scathing of his team's performance in their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last time out. The Liverpool boss claimed that the Eagles fully deserved the victory and will have to reexamine his side’s defensive structure, which has been lacking for a while.

Liverpool were getting a bit lucky in the early weeks of the season with multiple last-minute winners, which made up for their lack of defensive stability. This was always going to be a temporary solution for Slot; he will need to ensure that there is appropriate defensive cover when Liverpool bomb forward.

A possible solution to this could be to play Dominik Szoboszlai at right back, which is where he played for Liverpool’s only two clean sheets this season (Burnley and Arsenal). The reason this is effective is that Szoboszlai mirrors Trent in a lot of his qualities on the ball, which also protects Liverpool in moments of transition, with Szoboszlai having a greater positional awareness than both Bradley and Frimpong.

Galatasaray have been dominant in the Super Lig so far this season with seven wins from seven games as they look to defend their title. They have had issues competing on the European stage with their 5-1 defeat against Frankfurt last time out, a perfect example of where the Turkish giants have been falling short on this stage, having dominated domestically for multiple seasons.

Galatasaray were knocked out of the Europa League at the round of 32 stage last season, so they have recent experience on the European stage, but will need to ensure that their home games return as many points as possible with away tests against Ajax, Monaco, and Manchester City still to come in the league phase.

📔 Galatasaray v Liverpool Formation & Team News

Liverpool line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but this quickly becomes a 2-3-4-1 when they are in possession. This is a very bold approach as it leaves the centre-backs isolated and requires one of the fullbacks, usually Kerkez, to come into midfield, which then allows Liverpool to fly forward with five attackers.

This hasn’t quite worked out as smoothly as Slot has hoped, I did think the fullbacks were a bit of a worry at the start of the season, purely because Liverpool had both Robertson and Alexander-Arnold in those roles for so long, meaning that the change was always going to be a bit of a jarring one. That being said, Liverpool’s attacking quality is still undeniable and they can really punish sides even when conceding, as they’ve already shown this season.

Galatasaray also line up in a 4-2-3-1, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this become a 4-4-2. I wouldn’t expect Galatasaray to line up in a low block in this game, as they are the home side and do have attacking talent in the final third in the form of Sane and Osimhen, so a mid block is probably what you’ll see from Okan Buruk’s side.
