Notts County to Win

It is the obvious result angle, but the research into Shrewsbury's chance creation so far this season convinced me that this was the way forwards in the match market.

County haven't exactly set the world alight at this stage but they could only have to score once to get the win here.

Shrewsbury haven't really come close to generating 1 xG in a match so far. There were some signs of improvement against Colchester, but they still only managed 9 shots in that match.

Notts County have created 1 xG or more in three of their four matches this season, though they have also conceded 1 xG in each match as well. My expectations are that Shrewsbury won't be able to do that this time.

Under 2.5 Goals

As intimated above, both teams haven't hit their stride from an attacking perspective.

We know Shrewsbury are struggling to create chances, and therefore

Shrewsbury Over 2.5 Corners

They may be struggling for chances in open play, but Shrewsbury have not yet failed to get at least three corners in a match so far this season.

Part of me considered backing Shrewsbury as the team to win the most corners in the match at 3.1, but it is a good bet to isolate them in this market instead so that we don't need to consider what Notts County do in the match.

They are averaging 4.73 corners earned per match over their last 30 matches. This remains at a respectable 3.8 when just factoring in only away matches from that sample.

  • Notts County are missing the contributions of Alassana Jatta - the striker got an additional three match suspension to his three matches for his straight red card in the play-offs

  • Shrewsbury are looking to avoid the double drop. This has befallen Carlisle United (2025), Forest Green Rovers (2024), Scunthorpe United (2022) and Southend United (2021)

  • Only Barnet are averaging more successful passes per 90 than Notts County this season in League Two, 391 per match

Notts County Slowly Becoming Less Extreme on Playing Style

County have become synonymous with a certain playing style since their National League days under Luke Williams. That style is to keep possession of the ball and play short passes, increasing the pace as the ball progresses forward.

Their average number of completed passes of 391 so far this season, though, is lower than their 24/25 average of 445, which was already a major reduction on their 526 inthe 23/24 season.

Stuart Maynard looks to be adapting County's style slowly but surely. We will see if this is to their benefit or not soon.

🔵 Shrewsbury Have to Find a Way to Improve Offensively Under Appleton

We have used this in our betting strategy for the match, but it is worth reiterating the Issues that Shrewsbury are having going forward.

Shrewsbury's biggest shot takers so far in the league have been defender Will Boyle and midfielder Taylor Perry, with John Marquis only managing four despite playing 90 minutes in each of the matches.

According to the stats, Shrewsbury have not created a single big chance yet this season. This has to change ASAP.

📊 Notts County v Shrewsbury H2H

These two were last in the same division in 2013/14 when they were both in League One.

They did meet in the League Cup in 2024, which ended 3-3, and there were also goals in the FA Cup in 2023 when that ended 3-2 to Shrewsbury.

It is a very even head-to-head in general, with Shrewsbury edging it 17 to 14 wins with 15 draws.
