Reading are one of three League One teams who have lost all three matches in the league, but it gets no easier travelling to promotion-chasing Bolton.

Bolton to Win

Despite some difficult matches, Bolton have probably enhanced their reputation and rating with their performances, if not their results.

The team and the squad in general looks well balanced and set up for what Steven Schumacher would want for his playing style. They have clearly focused their recruitment on speed at the top of the pitch, and that is making a difference in transition.

It goes without saying that Reading have not started the season in good form. Three defeats in a row makes them difficult to support in this match from a form perspective, especially against a team who look as prepared as Bolton.

This is especially the case given Reading's away form over the past few seasons. It has been an Achilles’ Heel for the club for a number of years, and their only away game so far saw a comfortable win for Lincoln, whereas Bolton saw off Plymouth easily in their only home game as well.

Thierry Gale to have 2+ Shots

I've mentioned about the recruitment of speed at the top of the pitch, and Thierry Gale, a Jamaican import from Europe, epitomises that.

Gale is a real running threat from wide, but he contributes shots as well. He has scored in League One already, which should hopefully only encourage shooting.

Gale is averaging 2.84 shots per 90 since starting his career for Bolton, and he hit four shots in their home game against Plymouth. If he starts here I think he is a cracking price for two or more shots here.

Bolton have also signed Ibrahim Cissokho for this role, so there could be a replacement in line. Super Sub could come into play here.

Amario Cozier-Duberry to Score or Assist

Cozier-Duberry looks set to be one of the biggest players in League One this season. He has already been a match winner for Bolton, and looked a real threat every time he is on the pitch.

He has averaged 3.3 shots per 90, scoring in the EFL Cup after coming off the bench, and he supplied an assist against Plymouth at home as well.

If we are expecting Bolton to win then I like the idea of one of their goals coming via Cozier-Duberry, whether he scores or sets up.

  • Bolton have used both of their foreign signing slots this summer on wide forwards - clearly a key area of recruitment for them

  • Reading have lost all of their league matches this season - conceding twice in each match

  • Bolton have conceded less than 2 xG in their three League One matches so far

Bolton Mixing Domestic Talent With Foreign Recruitment

Bolton's recruitment team have clearly spent some time surveying the scene on a global scale in preparation for this summer window.

In addition to the aforementioned Thierry Gale, Bolton have brought in American goalkeeper Tyler Miller, and Toulouse winger Ibrahim Cissokho, as well as some domestic talent.

Miller looks to be more of a backup than a first choice, but Gale and Cissokho should contribute a great deal to the first team. They should be players to watch out for in the score and assist markets moving forward.

🔴 Reading Look Brighter Off The Pitch, But Need to Stabilise on it

It is far too early to think about promotion and relegation for anyone, but I'm sure that if you offered Reading fans the position that they are in now, but with the ownership they have now, then they would still take it.

There is still a sense of youthfulness to the Reading team with a couple of teenagers and an average age of around 23, so even though the future looks brighter off the pitch from a financial perspective, it may be worth sticking with these talented youngsters in the long term.

📊 Bolton v Reading H2H

These teams have been in the same division for the last two seasons. They have split the results - two wins each.

Weirdly, Bolton's wins have both been 5-2, both in 2024, but Reading won their last meeting in 2025.

Indeed, there is a recent home bias to this head-to-head with Bolton winning the last two home games and Reading winning when they are hosting.
