Oldham v Barrow

League Two

17:30

Oldham to Win

Taking an odds-on price on a team that have taken only five points from five home league matches so far this season might seem something of a mug's bet, but allow me to explain why I think the price is more than fair on this occasion.

Oldham have had fairly tricky home encounters so far. Swindon and Gillingham are in the top seven, Barnet and Bromley are highly competent League Two teams, and Colchester are no mugs either. Oldham have won the xG battle in all of those matches bar v 2nd-placed Swindon. They could easily have bagged more points than they have so far if their finishing had been a bit better.

Indeed, there is no League Two club currently underperforming their xG by as much as Oldham are currently. The Latics have created 18.6 xG of chances but only scored 10 goals. This will likely right itself to some extent in the future, it could begin in this match.

Indeed, Oldham sit inside the top seven based on expected points, which is based upon xG performance in each match overall, whilst Barrow are way down in 19th for this metric.

Barrow's away record is six points from five matches, their wins have come against bottom-half teams Colchester and Crawley, whilst they have lost to Chesterfield, Harrogate, and Bristol Rovers. They are yet to face a team ranked in the top seven away from home.

Whilst Oldham are also currently mid table, we have seen already that their performances suggest their better than their league placing. I think that Oldham are a better team than Barrow, and they are far more likely to win the xG battle here, and therefore have a stronger chance of winning the match. Strong enough to be deserving of an odds-on shot.

📈 Oldham v Barrow Form & Stats

Oldham are a real mixed bag at the moment. There are lots of positives from their return to the EFL, but they have not yet justified that positivity with points on the board. They won three in a row recently in the league, but then haven’t won in two, followed by an EFL Trophy defeat away at Rotherham last time out. Their overall record has them only 15th, whilst their expected points haul would has them inside the play-offs.

Oldham have kept the most clean sheets in the league (five) and have the joint-lowest goals conceded record alongside Walsall (0.8 per match). Their expected goals total is 2nd in the league at 18.6, but they have scored only 10, ranking them only 18th. Oldham put in the highest number of accurate crosses per match in the league as well.

Barrow lost 2-1 at home to Tranmere in their last match, but that was in the EFL Trophy, so it is unlikely to have little impact on their overall form. Looking at just League Two football, Barrow have recovered from a difficult run of four defeats in a row to pick up seven points in their last three matches, most recently drawing 0-0 at home to Shrewsbury.

Barrow are not a strong attacking force, they are 22nd in the league for goals scored with only 0.8 goals scored per match, but they are not conceding many either, only 1.1 per match, ranking them joint-5th in the league on goals conceded. They are a very low possession team, averaging 41.1% possession, the 2nd-lowest in League Two, and they are 23rd for shots on target and 21st for big chances created.
