The last time these two met, was all the way back in 2019 in a Euro qualifier group. Poland had the upper hand, winning 1-0 in Vienna, before playing out a 0-0 draw back home in Warsaw. Those results helped them achieve top spot in their group.

A lot has changed since then, though. Ralf Ragnick has taken charge of Austria and got them playing an entertaining brand of football, with results to match.

Poland were almost completely written off before their game against Netherlands – most giving them no chance without their captain Robert Lewandowski.

After breaking the deadlock from a corner, Poland were perhaps unlucky to leave Hamburg with nothing to show for it. A deflected Gakpo longshot levelled the scores before Wout Weghorst stabbed a shot past Szczesny to secure the points. 

Chances were abundant at both ends, Poland managed 12 shots amounting to 1.32 xGF, while conceding 1.46 xGA from Netherlands’ 21 shots. Nicola Zalewski of Poland was impressive on the left flank, he was crucial for progressing Poland up the field.

📊 Austria Form and Stats

Christoph Baumgartner missed a massive chance to take the lead against France, which was immediately punished as France took the lead just two minutes later. Max Wöber had an evening to forget, nodding into his own net before being subbed at the hour mark. 

It was a real contest, as Austria made 18 fouls along with 27 tackles. Ragnick was brave in his tactical setup, continuing to press high which led to some golden chances for France. Kylian Mbappe was guilty of missing a one-on-one after being played in by Rabiot.

Nicolas Siewald was a standout in midfield, making 8 tackles. His tigerish approach was crucial for breaking up French attacks and winning the ball high up the field.
