📂 Port Vale v Sunderland Cheat Sheet
📈 Port Vale v Sunderland Form & Stats
Port Vale sat in a deep block against Bristol City, and in fairness to them, they did incredibly well to restrict the visitors. Joe Gauci only had to make two saves in 120 minutes, while Port Vale were able to fashion some good chances on the break. It hasn’t been an easy campaign for the League One side so far, but they do come into this clash on a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions.
They’re not used to facing a side with as much quality as Sunderland, but on home turf, Port Vale might just fancy their chances of causing an even bigger upset.
Sunderland were somehow able to snatch a 1-0 win against Leeds last time out, as Habib Diarra converted from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. That was one of Sunderland’s three shots overall, while Leeds accrued 18 attempts worth 1.15 xG. Melker Ellborg was able to see out a clean sheet on his Sunderland debut, as he recorded four saves, deputising for the injured Robin Roefs. That was a much-needed win for the Black Cats, as they had failed to win any of their last four Premier League matches.
📔 Port Vale v Sunderland Formation & Team News
Granit Xhaka was on the receiving end of a strong tackle from Tyler Adams last weekend, which was his first start back from injury. Regis Le Bris confirmed Xhaka is still carrying discomfort, hence why he was benched midweek, so it’s uncertain whether he will start here.
Habib Diarra scored the only goal against Leeds last time out and against Oxford in the previous round, so he looks set to start this weekend. Bertrand Traore is another injury doubt, after lasting just seven minutes on Tuesday night - he was brought on after 88th minutes, but had to be replaced in stoppage time.
Port Vale should go with an unchanged lineup from midweek, but Tyler Magloire has emerged as a fresh doubt after being replaced in extra time. Andre Gray could potentially come in up front, as Port Vale will stick to their 5-2-3 formation, hoping to remain compact in midfield again to limit chances for Sunderland.
