2026 World Cup England Squad Predictions

Noni Madueke to be in Finals Squad
  • England World Cup Squad
  • World Cup 2026
1 Selections @ 1.80

Noni Madueke

Noni Madueke has already had a chance to impress Thomas Tuchel with the winger filling in for an injured Bukayo Saka across the early international breaks.

He’s injured at the moment, but staked a real claim to be included in Tuchel’s plans for the showpiece event with a goal and an assist across his four games for England under the new boss. I would argue that Madueke was one of the best England players in the games he’s played so far, alongside Elliot Anderson.

Saka is one of the first names on the team sheet for England, which is probably why Madueke is priced slightly outside the favourites to be called up. That being said, I think Madueke has a slight edge on the other players competing for that secondary role in the squad.

Madueke’s main rival to be in the squad is Jarrod Bowen, who has been overlooked by England in previous campaigns despite posting solid numbers. The fact remains that there is a bias towards players playing at the elite clubs; you only have to look at Jack Grealish’s recent exclusion from the latest camp to see the preference towards more established players.

Madueke is also useful because he can play on both wings. I think he’s much better on the right, but with Saka such a guarantee to start games if he is fit, Madueke could be utilised on the opposite side. It should also be noted that Saka’s injury record has worsened over recent seasons. He missed 18 games in the Premier League last season through injury and aggravated the same issue in the early periods of this campaign. This could open up another angle for Madueke to make his way into the squad.

Tuchel has come out in press conferences and said that his favourite trait of Madueke is his work rate. Having watched Chelsea under the tutelage of Tuchel, this is a necessity for attackers if you want to play under him. Madueke’s desire to always take on his man is another massive bonus, which can put him in contention to be in the England squad, as another option in the final third to Saka or on the left wing.

Reece James to be in Finals Squad
  • England World Cup Squad
  • World Cup 2026
1 Selections @ 1.50

Reece James

Reece James will certainly go to the World Cup if he is fit, this pricing is likely because of his previous injury issues but Tuchel has already spoken of his admiration of Reece James as England’s starting right back having worked with him at Chelsea.

I’ve been keeping a keen eye on the recovery of Reece James this year following constant injuries and the Chelsea medical team, alongside Enzo Maresca, appear to have found a formula that works for the full back.

They manage his game time as well as ensuring that his role doesn’t involve constantly bombing up and down the pitch. Instead, his ventures forward are targeted, and he can still produce quality in the final third, as he’s already shown under Tuchel with his goal from a free kick against Latvia.

Tuchel and James also have a really close connection. James was part of the Chelsea side that won the Champions League under his tutelage, with the now England boss revealing that he refers to him as ‘Reecey’, underlining the strength of their personal relationship.

This selection will hinge on the fitness of James throughout the season, but recent months suggest that he is on a more effective plan to manage his body than he has been in previous seasons. James featured in 27 games for Chelsea last season, the most he’s managed since the 2021/22 campaign - and he’s already made 14 appearances this term.

When it comes to alternatives, I don’t think there’s any chance of Reece James losing his spot in the side if he is fit. Trent Alexander-Arnold has not yet had a chance under Tuchel, and injury may bar him from doing so until just before the World Cup. Tino Livramento is another possible option, but it’s too early for him to line up as England’s starting right back, I can see him being called up in a supporting role, though, as James’ backup.

Liam Delap to be in Finals Squad
  • England World Cup Squad
  • World Cup 2026
1 Selections @ 8.00

Liam Delap

Thomas Tuchel has a bit of a headache when it comes to the striker position. Harry Kane will lead the line, but outside of the Bayern Munich striker, are there really any elite England #9s?

You could make a case for Ollie Watkins, but I wouldn’t class him as elite. I can see Delap rivalling the likes of Watkins, Ivan Toney and Dominic Solanke for a spot in the squad.

This isn’t to say that Delap is an elite option, but rather a breath of fresh air for the striker role, which is a bit stale without Kane. Kane is in fantastic form right now, and England do rely on him for goals, but the European Championship last summer highlighted the case for another option at times.

Gareth Southgate took Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins and Harry Kane to the European Championships last summer in Germany, so there is scope for Tuchel to take a third option alongside Watkins and Kane.

Southgate made a mistake in my opinion by not utilising Toney more often; variation is always good in an international tournament. Delap is England’s future striker in my view, he’s got all the ingredients to lead the line and could end up being a surprise inclusion with his name not really being discussed, after an injury-hit start to the season.

I think Delap will get at least one opportunity in an England camp before the World Cup, if he is able to stay fit, that will put his foot in the door as a potential option for Tuchel. Delap is the profile of striker that Tuchel likes as well, he’s very physical and a real handful - even if he only features from the bench to cause chaos in the latter stages of matches.

England’s U21 coach, Lee Carsley, said recently in an interview that the national team needs more centre forwards, and more orthodox number nines that are capable of scoring goals. I’d argue that Delap has a real case as one of England’s better striking options with Kane out of the equation.

It’s also clear that Delap is far too good for U21 international football now, which may tempt Tuchel to promote him to the senior squad. He’s been in the England set up since U17s, so he has come through the ranks well and could earn his chance at his first major international tournament next year. Tuchel may also be more likely to pick him now that he is at Chelsea, with big club bias often coming into play with national team selections.

Tactically, Delap is also useful for how he disturbs low blocks. This would be particularly useful to England in the group stages of the competition.

Tosin Adarabioyo to be in Finals Squad
  • England World Cup Squad
  • World Cup Squad
1 Selections @ 21.00

Tosin Adarabioyo

The 28-year-old is uncapped, but a nice wildcard addition at 20/1. Injuries could work in our favour with this longshot.

I think England’s weakest area is centre back. Especially now that Levi Colwill is expected to miss out on the World Cup after suffering an ACL injury at the start of the season. Tosin has never featured for England before, at any level, but could get an opportunity to be part of the squad for this tournament when considering injury issues and a general lack of quality at the back.

Marc Guehi and John Stones should be the starting centre backs in my opinion, but banking on Stones being fully fit is quite a risk, seeing as the City centre back has featured in under 30 games in each of the last two seasons. Guehi is a lock for the centre back role, but the other spots are up for grabs.

Not only is Tosin imperious in stature, he’s also more than comfortable on the ball. A good example to highlight just how good he is with the ball at his feet is the fact that Enzo Maresca has identified only Tosin and Colwill who can play in the central centre back role for Chelsea - a role designed to encourage the central centre back to break through lines. Tosin has completed 312 passes across just four Premier League appearances this season (79.5 per 90).

The other centre back options don’t exactly jump off the page, Ezri Konsa and Jarell Quansah are solid but not spectacular, and I would argue that Tosin can offer a bit more to the squad than those two. Harry Maguire is another option, but you feel as though he’s had his chance in the England squad, and then you have Dan Burn, who is the most similar to Tosin in terms of physicality and stature.

I think Tuchel’s best approach to ensure that the backline isn’t too porous next summer is to bulk up the backline with very physical players. He’s already started doing this by preferring players like Burn.

Predicted England World Cup 2026 Squad

Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford.

Jordan Pickford is guaranteed to be the number one keeper for the Three Lions at the World Cup next summer should he avoid injury from now until the showpiece event.

Thomas Tuchel has shown a keenness to integrate James Trafford into the squad, likely as a long term option for the goalkeeping spot.

Dean Henderson seems to be the favoured pick as Pickford’s backup up with the Crystal Palace keeper starting a few of England’s friendlies under the German boss so far. Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope are other potential options for England, but neither look primed to push either Henderson or Trafford for a spot in the squad.

Reece James, Marc Guehi, Dan Burn, John Stones, Nico O'Reilly, Tino Livramento, Ezri Konsa and Trevoh Chalobah.

This area of the pitch is quite clearly England’s weakest area, with the centre back position in particular looking a bit vulnerable if England were to sustain injuries from now until the World Cup.

Marc Guehi and John Stones are likely to be the partnership that we see lining up at the World Cup next summer, though Stones’ injury issues make him far from a shoo-in. Dan Burn is clearly a favourite of Tuchel’s and has been involved in every camp so far, getting regular minutes as both a centre back and left back for England - his versatility and set piece threat increases his chances of being in the squad.

Reece James has shown sustained good fitness levels for the first time in his career, which massively boosts his chances of being the starting right back for the Three Lions at the World Cup. Djed Spence has also been used here, but Livramento seems to be a more obvious backup choice for Tuchel following a strong performance by the Newcastle full back in the U21 European Championship over the summer.

Left back is another problem area. Myles Lewis-Skelly looked to have nailed down that spot in the early camps under Tuchel, but he has struggled for game time since then, which could open the door for another young full back to take his spot in the squad. Nico O’Reilly slotted seamlessly into the England backline on his Three Lions debut and is near guaranteed consistent minutes until the end of the campaign.

Ezri Konsa and Trevoh Chalobah then stand out to me as the best options for rotation in the backline. Konsa may even be knocking on the door of a starting role with his consistent performances for England so far. Chalobah is someone who has worked with Tuchel before, and looks to have the trust of the German boss, with Chalobah also guaranteed consistent minutes until the end of the season.

Elliot Anderson, Jude Bellingham , Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson, Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers, Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze.

This is probably the most competitive component of the England squad, with Thomas Tuchel stating on multiple occasions that he will prioritise the balance of the squad over anything else. A public spat with Jude Bellingham has been the only stain on what has been a largely successful spell with the Three Lions so far, and this disagreement has been on this exact issue, with Tuchel seemingly looking to try and prove a point to the Galactico.

That being said, it would be a real shock if Bellingham isn’t in the squad, he’s one of England’s most important players alongside Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane, so only an injury would rule him out of the squad, despite his issues with the manager. Anderson, Bellingham and Rice are likely to be the starting trio for Tuchel in the middle of the park, with the duo of Rice and Anderson working really well since Tuchel took over.

It also seems inevitable that Jordan Henderson will make the squad, having been picked for every camp since Tuchel took over. It’s clear that Henderson’s role is a more supporting one, likely to do with encouraging a professional and positive culture in the camp. It also doesn’t hurt to have players with major tournament experience. This will be the fourth World Cup that Henderson has featured in for England, should he be called up to the squad next summer.

The remaining midfield options are players that Tuchel is likely to lean on in awkward situations or instances where England may need a bit more control. Adam Wharton has been overtaken by Elliot Anderson in the race for a starting spot, and not many people can argue with that, given Anderson’s performances for England. Wharton still does have a place in the squad and offers solid cover in a position that England were desperately lacking in last summer.

Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden and Eberechi Eze are all players who would be the key for many other national teams across the world, but find themselves having to scrap for even one place in the squad with so much competition. Tuchel may decide that taking all three may be unnecessary with how similar their profiles are, but Eze is a player that I think will stay in the squad regardless - he offers an option off the left as well as in the middle of the park and has star quality which is necessary for England’s lofty ambitions next summer.

Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke and Liam Delap.

Harry Kane is nailed on to be the starting striker at the World Cup, but I think his understudy could be a surprise inclusion if Liam Delap is able to maintain fitness and find a consistent role in Chelsea’s starting XI. I think Delap will mature into England’s future number one striker when Kane eventually moves on, and this is the perfect tournament to integrate him into the squad.

On the left wing, I’ve gone for a pairing of Gordon and Rashford. I would personally take Jack Grealish, but Tuchel doesn’t seem to be a fan of the Everton winger, seeing as he hasn’t been involved in any of the camps under the German so far. We can assume that Tuchel is looking for his wide players to be as direct and quick as possible, which is why Gordon and Rashford have rotated in that left wing role since Tuchel became England manager.

It’s a similar story on the right hand side with Noni Madueke and Bukayo Saka offering two solid options down that side. Madueke has arguably been the standout performer for England under Tuchel so far, alongside Elliot Anderson, and although his injury has cost him a spot in the latest camp - his performances in the early games under Tuchel should give him a real chance of being called up as Saka’s understudy.

Cole Palmer is my final pick, I don’t think he’ll be able to get a starting spot in this side as he hasn’t had a chance to properly play under Tuchel, and his inclusion would affect the overall balance of the team. That being said, someone like Palmer is invaluable to have in the squad - not only for the number of positions he can cover - but also due to the ability he possesses.

When will the England World Cup squad be announced?

The World Cup starts on June 11th, and while there has not been a deadline confirmed for when the squads will be announced, it is expected to be around a month before.

How many players will be in the England World Cup squad?

This is still to be confirmed. Thomas Tuchel's most recent squad contained 25 players, he has named 24-man squads previously, too. There will likely be a provisional squad with a few players missing out on the final selection after that.

Who got picked for the England squad?

Alex Scott was the fresh face in the England squad for the November break. Another interesting wrinkle was Tuchel not naming a recognised striker away from Harry Kane.

Who’s been dropped from the England squad?

Morgan Gibbs-White, Ollie Watkins, Curtis Jones, and Myles Lewis-Skelly missed out on the squad, among others.

What players didn’t make the England squad?

Trent Alexander-Arnold did not make the England squad again. He did only recently return from injury for Real Madrid, but his absence does not bode well for his chances of making the World Cup squad.

Who has missed out on the England squad?

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was not included in the England squad, despite being involved in the October internationals.
