RB Leipzig and Celtic square off in an important Champions League Group F encounter on Wednesday in one of two early kick offs.

The home side come into this match without a point, having shot themselves repeatedly in the foot during a 4-1 loss against Shakhtar on matchday one before going down subsequently to Real Madrid in the Bernabeu six days later.

Celtic, meanwhile, have given an altogether more positive account of themselves, despite being oy a point better off. They were highly competitive against Real Madrid, despite a 3-0 loss, then should have beaten Shakhtar.

Christopher Nkunku to Score a Goal

France international Nkunku is Leipzig’s man for the big occasion and comes into this game in arguably the best shape he has been in this season. Having played only around 30 minutes for Les Bleus during the international break, he has had a valuable opportunity to rest up after a breathless start to the season.

Certainly, this appeared to help him at the weekend as he scored twice against Bochum in a 4-0 win.

Meanwhile, his scoring pedigree in the Champions League is excellent. Last season, he scored seven goals in six games in the competition, and though he is waiting to get off the mark this time around, he showed on Saturday that he is waiting to explode. Meanwhile, he also netted against Rangers in the Europa League last term, so he has previous for netting against Scottish club.

He is also likely to see plenty of action in this game. He has completed the full 90 minutes in all of Leipzig’s league and Champions League matches this season.

Over 2.5 Goals

It would be remarkable if this was a game that did not produce goals given the attacking approach of both clubs involved. Leipzig, for example, have played 12 competitive games this season and 10 of these have produced at least three goals. Celtic’s figure is less prolific as they have been involved in seven of 11 matches with over 2.5 strikes, though part of this is due to playing so many teams who adopt an ultra-defensive approach against them. Their hosts here certainly will not.

Meanwhile, Leipzig have a prolific record when it comes to scoring at home. The only occasion on which they have failed to score at least twice was that defeat to Shakhtar, which was a real blip as far as they are concerned.

Celtic, meanwhile, are without their key defender in the form of Cameron Carter-Vickers. They do not look the same when the US international, who many feel should have won Scotland’s Player of the Year award last season, is missing. Look for Leipzig to take advantage, but his absence will not stop the Hoops from adopting their usual attacking approach. 

Celtic to have 4+ Shots on Target

Celtic under manager Ange Postecoglou have a very defined philosophy of playing, and that means being on the front foot whenever possible. It means that they are a thrilling side to watch and are ready to attack any challenge.

This is reflected in their statistics. In each of their 11 competitive matches this season, they have managed at least four shots on target. Their low figure came against Real Madrid, while against Shakhtar in the previous matchday they made the goalkeeper work on seven occasions.

Indeed, going back to the beginning of September 2021, there have only been seven matches in which Celtic have not had at least four shots on target, two of which came against Rangers and one of which came in a dead rubber encounter against Dundee United when the Scottish Premiership title had already been won.

There will be no special approach for this game, with Celtic set to be as positive as ever. With all their key attacking players available, they are capable of posing their opponents some real problems.
