⚪ An Imperious Start to Life in Madrid
Xabi Alonso could hardly have wished for a better start as Real Madrid boss, with his side collecting maximum points from their opening two fixtures. The Spaniard took over from Carlo Ancelotti in the summer, and while Los Blancos have made wholesale changes to their defensive personnel, performances have been settled.
Against Osasuna, Madrid conceded only two shots across the 90 minutes, worth just 0.36 xG. Real Oviedo fared little better, managing only six attempts in front of their home fans, amounting to a total of just 0.5 xG. The key trend from both games so far has been Madrid’s ability to control the game and dominate their opponents.
Alonso has got his team to counter-press effectively, meaning the majority of the games contested in their opponents’ defensive half. Both opposition teams have simply struggled to get out of their own half, succumbing to relentless Real Madrid pressure and attacks.
🔴 Confidence Lacking at the Son Moix
Mallorca’s start to the new campaign has been far from encouraging, beginning with a nightmare 3-0 defeat to Barcelona. The game was effectively lost within the opening half-hour, as the hosts found themselves two goals down inside 23 minutes before seeing both Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi sent off shortly after. With nine men on the field, it became about damage-limitation, and Mallorca were probably glad that the scoreline only finished 3-0.
Los Bermellones did manage to get off the mark in their second outing, although their performance was again underwhelming. An 87th-minute strike from Mateo Morey salvaged a point, but it masked what was another lacklustre display in attack. Despite chasing the game from the 38th minute, Mallorca created just 0.68 xG from 12 shots, highlighting their lack of cutting edge.
Given they scored only 35 league goals last term, with 15 of those in away games, attacking struggles seem set to persist this season.
📊 Real Madrid v Mallorca H2H
Although Mallorca did manage to take a point from Real Madrid at the Son Moix Stadium last season, Real Madrid have had the upper hand in this head-to-head contest, winning eight of the last ten meetings.
At the Bernabeu, Los Blancos have won each of the last ten competitive meetings against Mallorca, with five of those to nil.
