The Terriers prepare to travel to the New York Stadium this Saturday lunchtime for what is expected to be another fiery fixture in gameweek 4 of League One.
Rotherham have been unfortunate so far this season with their xPts suggesting they should be sitting sixth in the table. Manager Steve Evans will have them fired up for this game as they look to climb the table. However, they were dumped out of the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening and did not return home until late, and it was not until Thursday that they could regroup as Evans looks to get his squad firing.
In their last two games against Wycombe, which they lost 2-0 and Bristol Rovers which ended 0-0, they have generated a total of xG 4.14, registered 36 shots and hit the target with 13 efforts. The variance in their performances and results will turn as they are creating chances and at some point, these underlying metrics will result in goals.
No side has taken more shots than the Millers this season, whilst only three sides have had more shots on target. They have taken the second most crosses and had the most touches of the ball in the opposition box. Goals will come for the Millers.
Huddersfield are not far behind with the Millers attacking stats. They have had just eight fewer shots, and one less shot on target, whilst they average around four fewer crosses and eight fewer touches in the box than the Millers. The Terriers have scored in every game this season including the EFL Cup. Across all competitions, they have scored two or more goals in four of their five games.
They have several excellent attack-minded players for this level with Danny Ward, Josh Koroma, Callum Marshall and Rhys Healey, so manager Michael Duff can rotate and change his lineup with ease.
Rotherham v Huddersfield Best Bets
Given the attacking data for both sides, we are keen to get behind both sides to find the net at 1.75 with Paddy Power. Whilst the Millers are yet to find the net this season, their underlying data suggests that this will not continue.
Huddersfield have been tight defensively this season, but they have been a little fortunate with the opposition. Posh were poor on the opening day and have since returned back-to-back wins, scoring six goals in the process. The Terriers then had two home games against Stevenage and a very poor Shrewsbury who sit 24th for points, xPts and xG difference.
The Millers can test the Terriers and we could see a very open match here. The Millers’ manager, Steve Evans, has talked this week about getting over the disappointing start to the season and getting the players up for the game and ready to fight, this could lead to goals at both ends and therefore a second bet of over 2.5 goals seems a sensible play. There were 39 shots and 15 shots on target in the last game for Rotherham and if it is as open as that against Huddersfield, we will see plenty of goals – over 2.5 goals can be backed at 2.0.

📊 Rotherham Form and Stats
Rotherham have started the season with a record of W0-D1-L2 failing to score in all three league games. Steve Evans took over as manager late into last season and he has made several earlier transfers, but these have failed to produce wins or goals.
They currently sit down in 21st position in the league table, but we have them as high as sixth on xPts and fifth in xG difference. They have been unfortunate not to collect more points. Striker Sam Nombe sits fourth for xG, third for shots taken and eighth for shots on target yet has not scored. His goals to xG is the worst in the division.
The Millers were relegated from the Championship last season. They have now won just four of their last 40 league games, tasting defeat in 25. Evans’s record since returning to the club now reads W3-D2-L4 from all competitions, winning just once in the league from six attempts. They were knocked out of the EFL Cup midweek by League Two Fleetwood as Evans called it the lowest point of his career.
📊 Huddersfield Form and Stats
The Terries suffered the same fate as Rotherham last season as they were also relegated to League One. However, they have started well this season with a 100% record beating Peterborough, Stevenage and Shrewsbury. They currently sit second in the league table on xPts and xG difference. Midfielder Ben Wiles has started the season in good form. He scored four times in pre-season and has carried this on into the league campaign with two goals from the opening three games.
Last term they won just three of their 23 away fixtures, losing 10 and averaging just 0.94 goals per game. Huddersfield have kept just three clean sheets in their last 24 away fixtures, conceding an average of 1.71 goals per game. This season has been much better defensively for the Terriers with no side conceding fewer shots and only two sides conceding more shots on target. They have averaged just 0.87 xGA per game, the fourth lowest in the league.
⚔️ Rotherham v Huddersfield Head-to-Head
The hosts will be trying to overturn a long run of disappointing results against Huddersfield. The hosts have won just three of their last 28 league meetings and more recently it is just two wins from 13 matches in all competitions. Rotherham have failed to score in four of the last five games against the Terriers, whilst the South Yorkshire team has scored in 10 of their last 13.
When welcoming Huddersfield to the AESSEAL New York Stadium, Rotherham won just once with a record of W1-D4-L1. Both teams have scored in five of the six meetings and over 2.5 goals landed in 50%. The visitors have averaged 7.0 corners over the last six visits, winning at least six corner kicks in five.
Despite it being a Yorkshire derby, with just 53 miles between the two clubs, the card count is low with just 3.42 per fixture, although both sides have collected a card in 10 of the last 12 meetings. We must go back to the fixture in 2015 for the last red card between these two sides.
