Freiburg v Wolfsburg

There’s little doubt that three months ago Freiburg would have happily played Wolfsburg and taken all three points from them, but in recent weeks Florian Kohfeldt has managed to wrestle control of this squad and started getting impressive results out of them.

The young head coach has done exactly that by relying on sound, defensive tactics which have seen the Wolves concede just seven goals in their last six games – a defensive record that has been bested by only two other clubs in that period.

There’s no doubt that this shift in performances has been a result of confirmation that John Brooks’ will leave the club this summer, allowing the USMNT player to play with a freedom that has been missing for much of the season. And as such, his defensive partners Max Lacroix and Sebastiaan Bornauw have also looked back to their best too.

However, Wolfsburg’s hosts on Saturday are one of the few teams that do have a better defensive record than them. Christian Streich’s side have conceded just four goals from their last six games and it seems highly unlikely that the Wolves will be able to break Freiburg’s defence down with great regularity – even if star defender Nico Schlotterbeck remains a doubt for the match.

Both of these sides are enjoying a decent run of form at the moment, but each will be hoping to rely on their defensive fortitude over any reliance on goals. A point apiece and possibly two clean sheets seems the most likely outcome from this match.

Hoffenheim v Bayern Munich

With his side knocking on the door of a top four finish this season, there’s no doubt that Sebastian Hoeneß has done a tremendous job with his fast-paced and almost gung ho Hoffenheim side.

Mostly through the playmaking of Andrej Kramaric and a potent front three of Ihlas Bebou, Manus Dabbur and the exciting young prospect Georginio Rutter, Hoffenheim have put together the fifth best return in the Bundesliga for goals this season. However, on Saturday those goals may not be enough to pick up all three points.

Not only are Hoffenheim tasked with getting the better of Bayern Munich, but they’ll have to do so against a side that looked truly rejuvenated in midweek when they thumped Red Bull Salzburg 7-1 in the Champions League.

Indeed, Nagelsmann’s side have scored no less than 14 goals in their last five games in all competitions and against a Hoffenheim team that prioritize fast-paced attacking football over grinding out clean sheets, this should be a comfortable win for the guests and plenty of goals to boot.

Union Berlin v Stuttgart

There is no doubt that the wheels have come off Union Berlin’s season since the turn of the year. Not only did Urs Fischer’s side lose key defender Marvin Friedrich and influential talisman Max Kruse in the January window, but his side have also seen their form take a nosedive with just two wins from their last six games.

Fischer’s side have also been a safety first and defensive pragmatic side but without Kruse, the team have lost all impetus up front and managed just five goals from their last six league games. In fact, Union have failed to score at all in four of their last five league games.

As such, the capital side will be looking to Saturday’s clash with great desperation as they hope to pick up their first league win since late February against a struggling Stuttgart side that have also looked far from convincing lately.

Indeed, while Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side managed an impressive 3-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, Stuttgart have still only managed two wins in 2022 and just 11 goals from nine games. And continue to struggle against defensively sound teams like Bochum and Freiburg in recent weeks.

With neither side offering much up front or in a great run of form, this game will surely end up being a tight clash with very few goals shared between either side.

Borussia Monchengladbach v Hertha Berlin

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Hertha Berlin are undoubtedly in the midst of a full-blown crisis near the bottom of the Bundesliga table. Not only have the club lost their last four league games, but they’ve also managed to pick up just two points from their last eight.

In fact, the club are in so much turmoil that sporting director Arne Friedrich cut short his time at the club this week, a whole two months ahead of his planned departure because the club refused to sack interim head coach Tayfun Korkut, who has managed just two wins from 13 games since taking over in early December.

Of course, Gladbach haven’t looked much better in recent weeks, with just five points from their last five league games, but within that run of matches we’ve seen the Foals face Borussia Dortmund as well as a rejuvenated Wolfsburg and Stuttgart.

Indeed, Adi Hutter’s side may not be entirely convincing at the moment, but they have managed to get back to scoring goals, with no less than eight scored in their last five games, which is largely down to a return to form for forward Alassane Plea, who has picked up two goals and four assists in that time.

As such, while Gladbach remain one of the division’s weaker sides, they do now have an attacking edge to them that should allow them to comfortably get the better of a Hertha side that look truly hopeless right now.
