I landed a 4/1 Treble on Saturday’s Scottish League Cup action so I’ve decided to go for another one over tonight’s 11 games, with today’s effort coming in at similar odds. I’ve written up exactly why I’ve backed each selection below and you can back the bet here.
Hamilton v Ayr
🔴
Tip: Hamilton and Draw Double Chance
We’re headed back to our old pals Accies for the first leg of tonight’s treble, with Brian Rice’s men helping us to a treble win on Saturday. This time I’m backing them to get a result in tonight’s early game, rather than the goals we were after and got from them at the weekend.
It’s been a perfect start to the League Cup groups for Rice’s men beating both Edinburgh City and Falkirk away from home heading into this one against Ayr. There will be Hamilton fans at New Douglas Park for the first time in 16 months and that should be a massive advantage over their Championship counterparts.
A win tonight would all but guarantee top spot for Accies, however I have just gone for Win and Draw Double Chance as Ayr themselves are in with a shout of topping this group after a decent start, though they have only played the two League Two sides in the group thus far.
I mentioned this as part of Saturday’s treble research but Hamilton’s starting XI is talented, despite its lack of experience, and the likes of Lewis Spence, Callum Smith and Lewis Smith should be able to give Ayr’s backline it’s first proper test of the season and, at least, secure their side a point, if not two (a penalty shoot-out in the League Cup is worth two points to the winners, one to the losers) or even three.
Cove Rangers v Inverness
🦅
Tip: Inverness To Win
Heading north for the next selection on the treble, and I’m predicting Inverness to return home from Aberdeen and Cove Rangers with all three points and really put themselves in contention for this group.
Dropping points to Stirling was sloppy from Caley, even if they did come from two goals down, but they know that they’ve still to face current group toppers Hearts, so their fate is very much in their own hands. Defeating top-flight Hearts is a different kettle of fish to facing this Cove side though.
Cove have added big names ahead of their League One title push, namely Premiership Ross County’s Ross Draper and Iain Vigurs, but they’ve not started at all well, playing poorly in all three of their ties so far. Three defeats from three means Paul Hartley’s men are out of the League Cup and anything but a win tonight means they will be guaranteed to finish bottom of the group, and even then it might not even be enough.
Inverness should be too strong for their League One opponents tonight, with a lot of talent featuring in the three behind their enigmatic striker Manny Duku, with the trio of Aaron Doran, Shane Sutherland and Tom Walsh all capable on their day of hurting better sides than this Cove outfit.
Annan v Queen’s Park
🕷
Tip: Queen’s Park To Win
Last season’s runaway League Two winners Queen’s Park will be confident of giving themselves a chance of qualification into the Round of 16 with a win over an Annan side currently situated at the bottom of Group F.
Realistically, a win tonight to take them to seven points might not even be enough for Laurie Ellis’ charges to snatch top spot ahead of Motherwell or even as one of the three best second-placed teams but they’ve got every chance of getting the points on the board to be in with a chance.
31 points separated these two sides over the 18-game regular season in League Two in the previous campaign, with Queen’s Park romping to the title, defeating Annan on both occasions they faced each other, with tonight’s hosts struggling at the wrong end of the table throughout the year.
A division now separates the sides, and we should see that gulf in quality highlighted at Galabank tonight. The Spiders have retained the key players that got them promoted in convincing fashion and have even added some exciting youngsters to a squad that was far too good for League Two and is now one of the better ones in League One. We should see them at their best tonight against opposition not at their level.
