Bramall Lane will play host to Newcastle United as the Magpies return from their Champions League endeavours to face Sheffield United. The match will bring down the curtain on this weekend’s Premier League action and it should be an intriguing watch for a variety of reasons.
Sheffield United’s return to the top-flight has not yet gone according to plan as they have only collected a single point from their opening five matches. Paul Heckingbottom is already under pressure and rumours are swirling that the club could be ready to approach Chris Wilder for a sensational return. However, for now, Heckingbottom remains in charge and he will hope his side can address their concentration levels in the latter stages of games. They conceded late against Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and also last weekend at Tottenham where goals in the 98th and 100th minute denied them a first win, and point on the road.
Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United side return to Premier League action having contested their first Champions League game in 20 years. The Magpies emerged from Milan relatively unscathed having been dominated for large parts of the game against the Rossoneri. However, a credible 0-0 draw against one of Europe’s heavyweights will have surely done their confidence the world of good following a slow start in the league. The result is certainly something to build on, but Howe will be mindful of managing his squad effectively as they compete on multiple fronts this season.

Hamer to provide the Hammer blow?
Gustavo Hamer has been a shining light since arriving in Yorkshire from Coventry City in August. A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, Hamer excelled in the Championship last season earning him a big money move to newly promoted Sheffield United having caught the eye of Heckingbottom.
The Dutchman was scintillating for The Sky Blues last term, scoring 11 and assisting ten in his 44 games. This form has seamlessly translated to his new club as the midfielder has already netted goals against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham in his first four games for the Blades.
However, with a depleted squad, Hamer will be looking for contributions from his team-mates. Faced with a midfield battle against combative Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes, there is a worry for the home fans that Hamer’s threat will be nullified. Heckingbottom desperately needs a win to keep the wolves at bay and if his star man is unable to carry his side to a first victory of the season, it could spell the end of his tenure at the club. That’s a lot of pressure for a new signing to shoulder which could be telling at full time.
Sheffield United Team News
Sheffield United are certainly lacking in forward areas as last season’s top scorer Iliman Ndiaye opted for pastures new, signing for French side Marseille in the summer.
Heckingbottom’s problems upfront are compounded by the suspension of Oli McBurnie following his sending off against Tottenham last weekend. With young prospects Rhian Brewster and Daniel Jebbison out injured, Cameron Archer is expected to lead the line with inexperienced Benie Traore in contention to take the place of the suspended McBurnie.
The Blades are also struggling with injuries in other areas of the pitch and will be without club captain John Egan who joins stalwarts John Fleck and George Baldock in the treatment room. However, the impressive Hamer will continue in midfield, possibly alongside Manchester City loanee James McAtee who started the game against Tottenham ahead of Ollie Norwood.
Pope harbouring hopes of being England #1?
Nick Pope will no doubt be on the plane to Germany in the summer but he may well be looking to displace Jordan Pickford as England’s number one heading into Euro 2024. Pope was simply outstanding at the San Siro under wave after wave of attack on his goal.. That’s two consecutive clean sheets now, and the shot stopper will be hoping for a third against a seemingly toothless Sheffield United attack, building further momentum for his side.
Pope is only one element of the Magpies defensive rearguard that was the joint-best in the Premier League last season, only conceding 33 goals across the entire campaign. An extremely settled back four of Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier has been the blueprint of Newcastle’s recent success and they will be hoping for another clean sheet on Sunday.
With the Blades’ struggles with injury and suspension up top, and Newcastle’s solidity at the back, it’s difficult to see the home side scoring in this one.
Newcastle United Team News
Newcastle almost have a fully fit squad to choose from, but with more Champions League football scheduled, and Carabao Cup ties upcoming in the next few weeks, Howe will have to rotate his squad effectively.
Providing there were no knocks picked up in Milan, the back five almost picks itself although Valentino Livramento could be handed a first start. After an emotional night on his return home, Sandro Tonali is likely to partner Guimaraes in central midfield. The likes of Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes and Elliot Anderson may come into the starting XI having started on the bench in midweek, all coming on for cameo appearances in Milan.
After suffering a recent knee injury, Joelinton missed the Champions League opener and is set for a few more weeks on the sidelines, while Joe Willock isn’t expected to feature until late October.

✅ Newcastle to win
📈
Odds: 1.36
This match will be a good indicator as to how Newcastle United intend to manage fixture congestion this campaign, especially with the added complexity of European football. Howe is likely to rotate his players to accommodate the additional games, more so in the forward areas.
However, following some astute summer additions, the Magpies have built a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts. This is in stark contrast to their opponents who look very short on quality, especially as they contend with injuries and suspensions to key personnel.
The depth of Newcastle’s squad is evident and whoever comes into the side should have enough quality to see off a vulnerable Sheffield United. A comfortable away victory is a likely outcome which would pile more pressure on an under-fire Heckingbottom.

🚀 Gustavo Hamer to have 2+ shots
📈
Odds: 1.73
If there’s going to be any kind of threat on the Newcastle goal, it’s likely to come from the in-form Hamer. The midfielder has been the standout player for the Blades this season and in the absence of McBurnie, there will be an added reliance on him to provide their attacking impetus.
Hamer’s goal contributions for Coventry last season helped them make the play-off final, and there could be more to come this campaign. With two goals already to his name, it’s clear to see why he’s already a fan favourite. There is plenty to suggest he could overrun a Newcastle midfield fresh off the back of Champions League action.
The Dutchman has already amassed five shots in four games this season, two of which produced his first goals for the club. However, looking back further to last season, the 26-year-old managed an incredible 105 shots for Coventry, which equated to an average of 2.72 per 90 minutes of football.

🟨 Over 2.5 Sheffield United cards
📈
Odds: 1.60
Sheffield United have had their issues with discipline this season, accumulating a total of 16 yellow cards and the red for McBurnie last weekend. That’s an average of 3.4 cards per game and they sit joint second in the league’s disciplinary standings.
With Howe likely to make changes in the forward areas, there will be fresh legs and pace to contend with as players look to stake a claim for a regular starting spot, especially in the Champions League. This will cause issues for Heckingbottom’s side and they could find themselves in hot water once again with the officials.
Stuart Attwell has been selected to officiate this game, and that could result in a number of cards being shown. The 40-year-old has handed out a staggering 18 cards in the three games he’s overseen this season, coupled with the disciplinary issues the home side have, we could see a number of yellows shown here.

🛑 Anel Ahmedhodzic to commit 1+ fouls
📈
Odds: 1.25
At the epicentre of the Blades’ lack of discipline and composure is Bosnia and Herzegovina international Anel Ahmedhodzic. The combative defender has already committed nine fouls in his five matches this campaign and is one to watch in this game.
Ahmedhodzic has played every minute of Premier League football this season and absolutely loves a tasty challenge, ranking highly for number of tackles per game for his side this season. There is every reason to suggest he’ll get stuck in again, especially if the game isn’t going how the home team would like.
With the obvious pace of the Newcastle attack, and with the likes of Tonali and Guimaraes playing balls in behind, the tall centre back could find himself getting turned and desperately fouling opponents, much to the displeasure of card-happy Attwell. Backing at least one foul is almost a shoo-in.

👑 Newcastle -1 Handicap
📈
Odds: 2.20
Last season, nine of Newcastle’s 19 away games resulted in them scoring two or more goals, which is almost 50%. If they are to repeat the successes of last season, they will need to win games against sides like Sheffield United, and win them comfortably. Backing a fluid attacking outfit to score a couple of goals against a side low on confidence is a no brainer.

🚀 Gustavo Hamer to have 2+ shots
📈
Odds: 1.73
Despite Newcastle’s strength in depth, the away side could suffer from fatigue following their midweek exploits in Europe. Howe could opt to make a number of changes in personnel in the latter stages of the game which could benefit Hamer. There may be some late opportunities to get a few shots in on Pope’s goal so taking the midfielder to have a couple of efforts looks like a decent prospect.

🟨 Over 2.5 Sheffield United cards
📈
Odds: 1.60
There are a number of factors when considering the cards market for the home side. Attwell’s tendency to brandish cards at will this season, Heckingbottom’s desperate predicament, Newcastle’s pace and the inexperience in the Sheffield United side should all be contributing factors. Sticking with over 2.5 cards for the home side is value for money.

🟨 Anel Ahmedhodzic to be shown a card
📈
Odds: 2.50
Having already collected yellow cards in the home games against Crystal Palace and Everton, there is every chance Ahmedhodzic collects another. Last season, the 6ft giant amassed a total of 12 cards in his 34 games in the Championship, that’s almost a card for every three matches played. With Sheffield United short on experienced heads, the young defender is a prime candidate for a card.
