October is just around the corner and that is traditionally the beginning of sacking season in the EFL. It goes without saying that Sunderland’s start to the season will spare Tony Mowbray any concerns, but it is a different story for Sheffield Wednesday. Xisco Munoz was Dejphon Chansiri’s choice to replace Darren Moore after the manager who guided them back to the Championship could not agree a new deal with the chairman. Munoz was selected due to his previous success at this level in earning promotion with Watford in 2021. However, many observers of Watford at the time remarked upon how promotion should’ve been the minimum expected of that squad of players and that, indeed, it was the quality of players over the quality of the manager, that achieved that success.
The concerns over Munoz have done nothing but deepen since the season began. The recruitment has been a little bit unusual and probably hasn’t helped matters, but it could lead to an exciting match here. Any Sunderland match at the moment is worth watching. In complete opposition to Wednesday there is calmness emerging from the dugout where Tony Mowbray is a seasoned campaigner in this league, and often overperforms his resources whilst continuing to play attractive football.
Sunderland have shown some dominant characteristics in most of their matches this season and this should be the case at Hillsborough. The vast array of talent, mostly young talent as well, across the pitch is the envy of a number of Championship clubs. Confidence is high around the club and the fanbase feel that they are well-placed for another tip at the play-offs, if not automatic promotion. The desire is certainly there from the players and the fans alike. This preview profiles a Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland Bet Builder at around 3/1 and a 35/1 alternative:

Chansiri under pressure after undoing positive promotion
The miracle that ensued to get Wednesday back into the second tier, coming back from a 4-0 first leg defeat in the play-off semi-finals, has seemingly been wasted. The fall-out and subsequent departure of Moore, the muddled recruitment model, the appointment of Munoz, and the consistently eccentric entries into the media from Chansiri himself have turned the tide of ire at Hillsborough and pointed it squarely at the Thai. He is taking a bizarre approach to the bad relationship that he has with supporters, typified by a jaw-droppingly worded statement released on the club’s website this morning.
The basic data points tell their own story. Regardless of the results that see Wednesday currently sitting in 24th with no wins, they also sit 23rd for xG generated, 21st for big chances created, and 24th for shots on target per match, while only two shots on target per Championship match is not going to cut the mustard.
Something will have to change for Sheffield Wednesday to avoid an immediate trip back to League One. Their defensive data isn’t as bad, but the key is going to be finding a way to create more chances. Munoz has to get more out of his current personnel somehow, and soon, or he may face his own removal.
Sheffield Wednesday team news
One signing that does seem to have paid off is Devis Vasquez, he is certain to start in goal. Munoz seems likely to play three at the back in this fixture, Dominic Iorfa, Bambo Diaby and Akin Famewo are in line to be the central defenders.
Pol Valentin has blown hot and cold, but should get the nod on the right, much the same can be said of Juan Delgado on the left, both can look good going forwards but there is a sacrifice defensively. Barry Bannan could play, but his lack of mobility makes it difficult to work out how to deploy the team around him. Tyreeq Bakinson may have to play, but Jeff Hendrick and George Byers are also available for selection.
John Buckley has made a good impression and could play just off the forwards. Josh Windass will also play off a central striker which is likely to be Ashley Fletcher.
Sunderland’s fight to keep Jack Clarke looking justified
Sunderland’s plethora of attacking midfielders are all of interest, but the way that Jack Clarke continues to develop should be terrifying for Pol Valentin and Dominic Iorfa. Whilst Iorfa probably has the outright pace to handle Clarke, the question would be whether he is able to handle the change of direction and acceleration of the Sunderland wide man.
Clarke was at the centre of attention for many clubs in the summer window. Sunderland’s player trading model is well known to have a price for every player, as was seen with Ross Stewart leaving the club. Overtures for Clarke were resisted, or his price was never met, and Sunderland must be grateful for that.
The 22-year-old leads the league in goals, passes into the penalty area, successful take-ons, progressive passes, progressive carrying distance, progressive carries, and carries into the penalty area. In other words, he has become a devastating attacking weapon at Championship level. If Sunderland can solve their centre-forward dilemma in the next few weeks and months then they look well set for another successful season near the top of the Championship.
Sunderland team news
Sunderland will set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Anthony Patterson in goal. The back four will be Trai Hume, Luke O’Nien, Dan Ballard, and probably Niall Huggins, though Huggins may be a doubt due to minutes played already having had long periods out in the last couple of seasons.
Dan Neil and Alex Pritchard will patrol the centre of the pitch with support from Jobe Bellingham. Abdallah Ba may start wide on the left and come inside, while Patrick Roberts may also be ready for a start.
The right side will see Jack Clarke continue his ever presence, but the real question is at centre-forward. Mason Burstow has played a lot of minutes but Luis Semedo may be ready to come back in from the start.

ABC’s 3/1 Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland bet builder
🏆 Sunderland double chance
📈
Odds: 1.33
Sunderland are the better side of the two and are also good on their travels.
They won more points away from home last season than they did at home and this season has started in similar fashion. Seven of their 13 points have come on the road and it clearly suits their counter-attacking style.
With this bet offering the comfort of a draw as well as a Sunderland win, it means that Sheffield Wednesday will have to do something that they haven’t managed in eight games so far, so it is a great start to the Level 1 bet builder.

🛑 Juan Delgado to commit 2+ fouls
📈
Odds: 1.80
Regardless of who Sunderland use in their right forward channel, Delgado is going to have a tough evening.
Abdallah Ba has been one of the most fouled Sunderland players this season and if Patrick Roberts plays he is a very tricky customer.
Delgado’s attacking tendencies may see him ahead of the play and chasing back to get into position, a prime opportunity for a foul.

🎯 Dan Ballard to have 1+ shots
📈
Odds: 1.62
A big set piece threat for the team expected to dominate possession and territory is often a good spot.
Ballard has been huge for Sunderland in both boxes already this season and he is getting on a roll in terms of the shots he has taken.
He is averaging one shot per 90 minutes and has taken at least one in each of his last three matches.

ABC’s 35/1 Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland bet builder
🏆 Sunderland to win
📈
Odds: 2.30
The odds against quote about Sunderland takes into account home advantage that probably shouldn’t be as strong as it is priced in for.
With a couple of players coming back from injury the Black Cats are actually getting stronger and can make that count.

🟨 Pol Valentin to be shown a card
📈
Odds: 2.60
Pol Valentin’s direct opponent will be Jack Clarke and we know from the stats given earlier what kind of opponent he will be.
Clarke is by far Sunderland’s most fouled player. He has been fouled 22 times in the last ten matches.
Valentin picked up a yellow last time out v Swansea so now we know that he has that in his locker too.

🎯 Dan Ballard to have 2+ shots
📈
Odds: 4.33
Dan Ballard hit four shots recently against QPR away from home where Sunderland dominated.
He is the key set piece threat for the Black Cats.
