Rangers are seeking a ninth successive win in all competitions on Sunday when they face St Johnstone in a Scottish Premiership encounter at McDiarmid Park.
Philippe Clement’s side are recording win after win at present to keep the pressure up on Celtic at the top of the standings, having shut the gap entirely ahead of the weekend’s matches having had a significant chasm to shut when the Belgian took charge. The momentum is now with the Ibrox club, who have been the form team in the league over the past three months.
St Johnstone, meanwhile, have also been re-energised by a managerial change. Out has gone Steven MacLean, with the experienced Craig Levein having taken charge in November. The former Scotland boss has made Saints infinitely more difficult to beat and has guided them to a position of relative comfort after being bottom when he took over.
Nevertheless, Rangers start this encounter as heavy favourites to pick up three more points, having won their last four matches against the Perth side without conceding a single goal.

🏆 Match stats: Rangers to win with some to spare
Rangers will surely pick up the win in this encounter, continuing what is a formidable record against St Johnstone. They have won eight of the last night matches against the Perth outfit without conceding a goal.
Odds of 1.2 on the visitors can be made more attractive by adding a handicap of -1, meaning Rangers can be backed at 1.67. The Gers have won their last three matches against St Johnstone 2-0 and given the way they are dominating matches so completely, a comfortable win appears a likely outcome.
Indeed, Rangers have had more than 90 shots in their last three games, suggesting one of their opponents could take a real pasting in the not-too-distant future. Clement’s side are 2.88 with a -2 handicap. Levein’s St Johnstone have not lost by more than two goals previously, though.
But while the home side might be capable of limiting the damage, they are unlikely to pose Rangers too many problems going the other way. A clean sheet for the visiting team looks a probable outcome and this can be backed by backing against both teams to score a 1.6. Given Saints’ pitiful offensive history against Rangers, this looks a solid bet.
Predictions:
⚽ Rangers (-1) handicap @ 1.73
⚽ Both teams to score @ 1.60
🟨 Cards stats: Robinson to see yellow as Saints to be sinners
No player in the Scottish Premiership has committed more fouls this season than Daniel Phillips, who is averaging 2.2 infractions per 90, making the midfielder a likely serial offender in this match. He leads St Johnstone this season with six yellow cards in the Premiership and is 2.8 to be cautioned in this game.
Better value to see yellow, though, is Luke Robinson, who will likely be given the task of playing on the left. Rangers’ attacks are likely to come via the flanks, regardless of which winger Clement chooses to play this game. This will see the full-back put under pressure regularly. He already has five bookings to his name this season and it would be little surprise to see that figure rise in this clash. At 3.3 he is strong value.
Another possible option for St Johnstone is Graham Carey, who has been booked four times in the league. Up against James Tavernier, the left winger could be drawn into a rash foul against the Premiership’s top right-back.
St Johnstone look highly likely to pick up more bookings than Rangers, meanwhile. Only Motherwell have seen more cards than Levein’s side this season, while the Gers have seen a league-low 32 cards.
Connor Goldson, with six cautions this season, is Rangers’ leading card accumulator in the league this season, but the centre-back is unlikely to be put under significant pressure in this game. Nevertheless, he is 5 to find his name in the referee’s notebook, the same price as Todd Cantwell, who could well be given a breather for this match.
Predictions:
⚽ St Johnstone to receive most cards @ 1.53
⚽ Luke Robinson to be shown a card @ 3.30
⚽ Graham Carey to be shown a card @ 5.50
🎯 Shooting stats: Gers’ January signings to carry the threat
Rotation is likely to be the order of the day for Rangers once again, with Clement regularly making changes to his team at this juncture of the season, when the matches are flying thick and fast. This is vital to appreciate when making a Rangers bet builder. Expect alterations to the team that was used in midweek, with Fabio Silva set to be reinstated as the centre forward.
Although not a natural finisher, the Portuguese is getting plenty of efforts away, averaging more than two shots per 90 in the Premiership. In his previous Premiership start against Livingston, he had 2 shots on target and should be capable of reaching this mark again versus St Johnstone. Even 3 or more shots on target at 4.2 should not be discounted.
Indeed, based on recent form, any of Rangers’ starting midfielders or forwards are value to get shots on target. In their last three games, they have had 98 shots, including 38 on target. In these fixtures, only Ross McCausland against Ross County in midweek and Cyriel Dessers against Aberdeen have failed to hit a shot on target among their forward players.
This is the type of match that the club’s new signings should be looking to make an impact, so Oscar Cortes or Mohamed Diomande as anytime scorers at 2.5 and 4.5 respectively look attractive value, especially as they could be rotated into the team after being sparingly used in midweek.
St Johnstone, meanwhile, have little discernible offensive threat. They have not managed more than three shots on target in any of their last three Premiership games and are unlikely to offer Jack Butland much concern in this clash.
Predictions:
⚽ Fabio Silva to have 2+ shots on target @ 2.0
⚽ Oscar Cortes to score anytime @ 2.50
