Despite current antepost favourite, Scandinavia, looking the most likely winner, following an excellent success in the G1 Goodwood Cup over two miles, I’m eyeing up a few at much bigger prices.

Aidan O’Brien has a battalion of potential runners here, and I have a niggling doubt about backing the short price on offer, as Scandinavia also holds an Irish St Leger entry the day after the British equivalent. CARMERS also holds both entries but is around the 6-1 mark, offering better value in my opinion.

The Paddy Twomey-trained colt won for my column over 1m6f at Royal Ascot, prior to a good second in Group Two company at York. That fine effort came over 1m4f and he will be more effective stepping up in distance. I can see him keeping on strongly down the long Doncaster straight - playing a part in the finish for the placings.

Lazy Griff E/W @ 6.00

One of the more obvious St Leger contenders has to be LAZY GRIFF, hailing from the Charlie Johnston stable. The son of Protectionist has already shown remarkable toughness, as a dual Derby placer - especially at Curragh last time - with his rider noting that the colt flew home after seeming to not appreciate the quick conditions.

With any rain in the area, I would expect Lazy Griff to certainly have the requisite stamina, to go close, now raised to a suitable journey.

Furthur E/W @ 17.00

Of those at big prices, I like FURTHUR for the Andrew Balding yard. The Walgeist colt firmly bounced back from a tame effort in the Bahrain Trophy, with a decisive success in the G3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury.

He kept on strongly, having been held-up that time, and was extremely strong at the finish. The extra trip could prove to be a catalyst for further progress, which may see him bely his double-figure odds.
