📈 St Mirren v Rangers Form & Stats
St Mirren will begin life without Stephen Robinson after their manager departed for Aberdeen earlier this week. The Northern Irishman leaves the Saints 10th in the table, just three points clear of Kilmarnock in the relegation play-off spot.
The Paisley outfit have won just one of their last 13 top-flight matches and have lost four of their previous five, the latest a 2-1 defeat away to Dundee United.
The Saints have enjoyed far more success in the domestic cups this season, famously lifting the Scottish League Cup in December, while they also booked a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Partick Thistle last weekend.
Much of St Mirren’s struggles this term stem from their lack of firepower, with the Saints the division’s lowest scorers after managing just 23 goals in 29 Scottish Premiership games so far.
After enjoying a six-game winning run from the end of December through to the end of January, Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title hopes have taken a significant hit after drawing four of their last six league matches.
The latest of those stalemates came in a 2-2 draw at home to Old Firm rivals Celtic, where Rangers surrendered a 2-0 half time lead. The Glasgow giants met again at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup last weekend, playing out another stalemate, with Celtic ultimately prevailing on penalties following a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes. As a result, the Scottish Premiership now represents Rangers’ only chance of silverware this season.
Both teams have scored in each of Rangers' last five Scottish Premiership matches, with four of those contests featuring over 3.5 goals.
Three of Rangers' last five opponents in the Scottish Premiership have received a red card.
📔 St Mirren v Rangers Formation & Team News
It’s hard to predict how St Mirren will line up on Sunday with Craig McLeish in interim charge following Stephen Robinson’s departure. Former manager Robinson was well known for setting the Saints up in a well-drilled 3-5-2 formation.
The caretaker Saints boss will need to make at least one change to the starting XI that beat Partick Thistle last Sunday, after Marcus Fraser was forced off with a shoulder injury. Kion Etete is also a doubt after picking up a knock in the warm-up last weekend, though Josh Ayunga is closing in on a return to action.
Danny Rohl has deployed a 4-4-2 across the last two weekends against Celtic, but with little to show for it, the Rangers boss may revert to the 4-2-3-1 he has favoured for most of his tenure.
Regardless of formation, the visitors will once again be without injured duo Bailey Rice and Derek Cornelius. Connor Barron and Oliver Antman, however, could return to the squad after spells on the sidelines.
