Both Teams to Score @ 1.56

Both teams to score has been a recurring theme in Rangers’ games of late, and I think we can expect that to continue at St Mirren park on Sunday. There have been goals at both ends in six of Rangers' last seven matches across all competitions, including each of their last four.

Moreover, BTTS would have been a winning selection in each of the Light Blues’ three domestic matches this season, with Russell Martin’s men drawing 1-1 with both Motherwell and Dundee, before defeating Alloa 4-2 in the Scottish League Cup last weekend.

A trip to St Mirren will represent Rangers’ toughest Scottish Premiership assignment of the season to date, with the hosts more than capable of getting themselves on the scoresheet. Stephen Robinson’s side scored in each of their four meetings with Rangers last season, with both teams scoring in all bar one of those contests. It’s also worth noting that BTTS would have paid out in three of St Mirren’s four home matches across all competitions this season.

St Mirren Double Chance @ 1.76

It feels like Russell Martin is already walking on thin ice and I think the pressure could crank up a notch this weekend. St Mirren have been a regular thorn in Rangers’ side in recent times, winning two and drawing one of the four meetings between the pair last season. What’s more, the Saints scored multiple goals in three of those four matches, including each of their two on home turf.

While the season is still in its infancy, there are already regression red flags with Rangers, whereas St Mirren are looking as dogged and resilient as ever. Stephen Robinson’s side pushed Celtic all the way at Parkhead on the opening day of the season before falling to a last-gasp 1-0 defeat. The Saints have since knocked Hearts out of the Scottish League Cup. With Rangers looking fragile, St Mirren should smell blood on Sunday, and they look well placed to avoid defeat.

Over 1.5 Rangers Cards @ 1.53

I think Rangers look a little overpriced to collect at least two cards on Sunday afternoon. The new-look Light Blues look like they are really struggling to get to grips with the possession-based style of play that Russell Martin is trying to implement. The error-prone nature of Rangers’ performances has coincided with them collecting multiple cards over the opening stretch of the season.

In fact, the Ibrox club have racked up six yellow cards and one red across their first two Scottish Premiership matches of the campaign. On top of that, Rangers have received two cards or more in three of their five Champions League qualifying ties, including three against Club Brugge last time out.

St Mirren have already drawn two cards or more from both Celtic and Hearts this season, and their physicality should cause Rangers plenty of problems on Sunday.

Over 9.5 Corners @ 1.55

I would expect to see a minimum of 10 corners at St Mirren Park on Sunday afternoon. Historically, Rangers are a side that clock up large corner counts, particularly on the domestic scene. That has certainly been the case over the first two weeks of the season, with Rangers hitting 12 corners away at Motherwell on the opening day of the campaign.

The Gers have since hit seven when hosting Dundee the following weekend, with the visitors also chipping in with four corners of their own. What’s more, Russell Martin’s men racked up nine corners against Club Brugge on Tuesday night, with the Belgian outfit also earning nine corners during that contest.

As for St Mirren, each of their first two top-flight matches of the season have featured 10 or more corners, with their last league game at home with Motherwell generating 11 flag-kicks. The Saints earned seven corners on that occasion, and they can certainly play their part in covering the proposed 10+ corners line against Rangers on Sunday.

3 Selections @ 48.00

Marcus Fraser to be Shown a Card @ 4.70

I think Marcus Fraser looks well worthy of support to pick up a card on Sunday afternoon. The St Mirren defender already has two yellow cards to his name this season, tackling his way into trouble in each of his last two outings against Motherwell and Hearts respectively. Fraser was also a regular in the referee's notebook last season, racking up nine yellow cards and one red across his 45 appearances in all competitions.

Typically stationed on the right hand side of St Mirren’s back three, Fraser is likely to come up against Djeidi Gassama. The Rangers livewire has been fouled at least once in five of the six games that he has started this term, earning his side two free-kicks on the opening day of the season away at Motherwell.

John Souttar to be Shown a Card @ 4.00

Admittedly, John Souttar is probably not the first player that comes to mind when weighing up potential player card options for Rangers, however, I think the defender is a strong contender to have his name taken on Sunday afternoon. Souttar is prone to errors and he is likely to get drawn into a physical battle with Mikael Mandron this weekend. The St Mirren powerhouse has drawn three fouls across his two top-flight outings this term, including two away from home against Celtic on the opening weekend of the season.

It’s also worth mentioning that Souttar won’t be playing alongside his new centre-half partner Nasser Djiga on Sunday, with the Wolves loanee suspended after receiving a red card against Dundee. On top of all that, the Scotland international has already been booked twice across his seven appearances in all competitions this season so far.

Djeidi Gassama to Score Anytime @ 2.78

Djeidi Gassama has been one of the few shining lights during Rangers' troubled start to the season. The former Sheffiled Wednesday winger has already posted an impressive return of four goals and one assist across his seven appearances in all competitions to date. Gassama also had a goal ruled out by VAR against Club Brugge on Tuesday night.

I’ve watched a number of Rangers’ games this season and Gassama has consistently looked like the Light Blues' biggest attacking threat. He is very direct, has an eye for goal and has already shown that he is capable of producing moments of magic from distance.

With Rangers boss Martin having to chop and change his central striker option for one reason or another during the early weeks of the season, in-form Gassama looks the most likely candidate to get on the scoresheet for the visitors on Sunday.

📈 St Mirren v Rangers Form & Tactics

St Mirren have long had a reputation as a tough nut to crack under Stephen Robinson, and the early signs suggest that will be the case again this season. The Saints put up a spirited display when falling short against Celtic on the opening weekend of the Scottish Premiership season, and they have since played out a goalless draw with Motherwell, winning the xG battle 1.31 to 0.53 in that contest.

The Paisley outfit progressed to the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup last weekend thanks to a penalty shootout success over Hearts, following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

Saints boss Robinson tends to set his side up with a 3-5-2 system, with both wing-backs encouraged to get forward.

St Mirren were one of the most ill-disciplined sides in last season’s Scottish Premiership, collecting an average of 2.53 cards per game. The Saints were shown no fewer than five yellow cards during their last Scottish Premiership home game with Motherwell.

Dropped points and a string of lacklustre performances have seen new Rangers manager Russell Martin come under fierce criticism during the early weeks of his tenure. The Light Blues’ Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread following Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss to Club Brugge at Ibrox, with Martin’s men 3-0 down after only 20 minutes. Rangers' ropey defensive displays in the previous two rounds went unpunished, but that wasn’t the case against Brugge, with the Belgian side hitting the target with seven of their 10 efforts on goal at Ibrox.

With the return match to come in Belgium next midweek and then an Old Firm clash looming with Celtic next weekend, it already feels like three points are a must for Martin at St Mirren on Sunday.

The new Gers boss has opted for a 4-3-3 formation since arriving at the club, but there have been clear teething problems with his team getting to grips with the possession-based style of play that he is trying to implement.
