The mouthwatering fixture of the weekend sees Liverpool travel to north London to face Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs. The two sides have both started their respective Premier League seasons very well.
They are two of the four teams who remain unbeaten in the league after the opening six games with the other two being last season’s title chasers Arsenal and winners Manchester City. After both sides had relatively poor seasons last time out, it’s refreshing to see some positivity and new ideas from both managers.
Spurs and Liverpool always seem to produce box-office Premier League football. The last four results between the two are as follows:
- Liverpool 4-3 Spurs- April 2023
- Spurs 1-2 Liverpool- November 2022
- Liverpool 1-1 Spurs- May 2022
- Spurs 2-2 Liverpool- December 2021
The last meeting between the two was particularly thrilling with Spurs completing a 3-goal comeback with an injury-time Richarlison equaliser, only for Diogo Jota to go up the other end and score to put Liverpool back in front with virtually the last kick of the game.

Tottenham stats: Ange bringing positive vibes to Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur’s new boss Ange Postecoglou has captured the hearts and minds of almost every Spurs fan during his short time at the club so far. With him coming in and Harry Kane leaving, this season has very much been a renaissance for the Lily-Whites.
Comparing this season’s Spurs with last season would be like comparing a Fiat and a Ferrari. The two are worlds apart in terms of identity and results. They have already cruised past Man Utd this season as well as earning a point away at Arsenal.
Heung-Min Son is flying in Kane’s absence with only Erling Haaland having scored more than the South Korean. New signing James Maddison has been a revelation in the creative department and won PL Player of the Month for August. A player of this quality is something Spurs have lacked since the departure of Christian Eriksen three years ago.
Spurs go into this game at 2.88 to win with their opponents at 2.1.
Liverpool stats: Liverpool back to their best?
Liverpool had an incredibly tough 2022/23 season, especially against lesser opposition. This season the Reds seemed to have turned a corner with new signing Dominik Szoboszlai playing a starring role.
Their new-look midfield, along with players returning from injury, has made Liverpool a huge threat once again. Dropping down to the Europa League level helps their league cause too as they can rest more usual starters as they face much weaker sides than they would in the UCL.
They have won five of their opening six games with one draw:
- 1-1 draw v Chelsea
- 3-1 win v Bournemouth
- 2-1 win v Newcastle
- 3-0 win v Aston Villa
- 3-1 win v Wolves
- 3-1 win v West Ham
The only team with a better record is Man City who have won each of their opening six games. So far this season it looks as though we could be in for another Man City – Liverpool title race.
🎯 Tottenham offensive stats: Son stepping up
In terms of goalscoring this season, it has been the Heung-Min Son show for Spurs. He’s scored five in the league so far, with only Haaland netting more. No surprises there…
The forward is second in the shot ranks for Spurs, he’s had seven shots on target for an average of 1.30 per 90. But it’s new boy James Maddison who has been looking for a goal the most out of any Spurs player. He’s had 17 shots so far with 11 being on target, an average of 1.96 per 90.
Being Spurs’ designated freekick taker boosts his chances of having shots on target too. In a game of this magnitude, there is likely to be plenty of fouls, giving Maddison a huge chance at hitting the bullseye.
🎯 Liverpool offensive stats: Salah the main man
Liverpool’s offensive stats are dominated by Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez. Salah is one you expect to be leading the ranks in terms of shots on target given the fact that he’s one of the first names on the team sheet each week. He’s had seven so far this season for an average 1.21 per 90. He’s always a pretty safe bet for a shot on target.
Darwin Nunez has the most impressive stats for shots on target given his limited game time this season. The Uruguayan is second on the list despite only playing 2.5 90s this season. He averages two shots on target per 90 and has had five overall.
There’s no guarantee that he’ll start at all, but even if he gets subbed on, he’s still worth a look in-play. Especially if Liverpool are chasing the game.
🛑 Tottenham defensive stats: Udogie loves a foul
In terms of fouls betting the stand out by a distance for Spurs is Destiny Udogie. Ange’s left-back has fouled 13 times this season already for an average of 2.28 per 90. What makes him even more appealing in this fixture is his opponent. He’ll be facing off against Mo Salah who as we all know, is an absolute menace down the flanks.
He is constantly fed the ball and will always look to take a man on, he has attempted 15 dribbles so far this season in the league and has been fouled seven times.
Another player to look at is Pape Matar Sarr, he has committed nine fouls this season for an average of 2.09 per 90 and he’ll be up against Dominik Szoboszlai who has been fouled the most of any Liverpool player this season.
🛑 Liverpool defensive stats: Midfield battle will be key
The man we’ve just mentioned, Szoboszlai is also one to look out for fouls wise. The Hungarian is very cynical, particularly in the press. When Spurs are in possession he’ll be putting them under immense pressure.
His midfield partner Alexis Mac Allister will also adopt a similar high-pressing role against Spurs. He is Liverpool’s least disciplined player this season committing 2.04 fouls per 90. He was even shown red against Bournemouth.
The two will be up against a Spurs midfield that has been fouled a lot this season. Yves Bissouma and James Maddison have been fouled a combined 27 times this season. Spurs’ possession-based game combined with Liverpool’s high press is a match made in heaven for fouls.
