Mansfield Town v Carlisle United
🏟
Tuesday 13th September – 7:45PM KO
Mansfield Town take on Carlisle United on Tuesday and will be confident of making it back-to-back wins.
The Stags beat Doncaster Rovers 3-1 away last time out and became the first team to beat Gary McSheffrey’s side this season which shows the quality they have in their ranks. They are currently 7thin the League Two table and have aims of gaining promotion this term after losing in the play-off final in the last campaign to Port Vale. After their win over Donny, their boss Nigel Clough has said that they will continue to ‘stick’ to their principles. On the injury front, midfielder Hiram Boateng is out of action but that isn’t too much of an issue with the host of alternatives they have in their squad with the likes of George Maris, Anthony Hartigan, Ollie Clarke and George Lapslie all perfectly capable players at this level. Mansfield are yet to lose at home this season and have won every match against Tranmere Rovers, AFC Wimbledon and Stockport County so will be expecting to beat Carlisle. The fact they are the joint-second top goal scorers in the league (14 goals in seven games) suggests they won’t have too many issues in this one.
Carlisle have been inconsistent so far and that is reflected by the fact they are currently sat in 12th place, with two wins, three draws and a single loss in their opening six matches. However, they haven’t won in either of their two away matches this term against Colchester United and Stevenage so are having trouble on the road. Their manager Paul Simpson has said they have had an ‘ok’ start but will be worried by the fact his team conceded three goals to lowly Rochdale last time out in their 3-3 home draw against their fellow North West club. In addition, Leeds United loan striker Ryan Edmondson and defender Joel Senior are out of action which is a blow, with Kristian Dennis and Finlay Back taking their places respectively. Carlisle have been very reliant on Dennis for goals and he has scored five of their seven this season which shows they don’t really have any other sources of goals which is a worry. If Mansfield can keep him quiet, they should beat the Cumbrians this week.

Grimsby Town v Gillingham
🏟
Tuesday 13th September – 7:45PM KO
Grimsby Town have made an impressive start to life back in the Football League and are on a roll as they prepare to face struggling Gillingham.
The Mariners have carried on their momentum from winning the National League play-off final into this season and have their fans dreaming of back-to-back promotions. They are 9th in the table after their 2-0 away win at Newport County last time out and are a point outside the top seven meaning another victory over Gillingham would likely see them rise into the play-offs which is a great incentive. Their boss Paul Hurst, who signed a new contract last week, has said he has been making ‘subtle’ tactical changes recently which seem to have worked based on the fact are unbeaten in their last five league outings. Summer signing Niall Maher made his long-awaited debut last week which is a boost as he now provides useful competition and depth with full-backs Michee Efete and Anthony Glennon. Grimsby have lost just once in six matches and haven’t been beaten since the opening day against the now table toppers Leyton Orient so most signs point towards them extending their run against Gillingham. In addition, they haven’t been beaten at Blundell Park yet.
Gillingham have struggled so far in this campaign following their relegation from League One and still don’t seem to have recovered from that. They have won just once in their opening seven games and find themselves 21st in the table, two points above the drop zone. Their confidence will be low right now, especially due to the fact they have scored only once all season and that came on 6th August against Rochdale through Scott Kashket (five matches ago). The Kent club are seriously lacking a cutting edge up top and their manager Neil Harris has admitted he has ‘questioned’ his dressing room over recent times. To make matters worse, Portsmouth loan man Haji Mnoga can’t play against Grimsby as he is suspended after picking up a red card last weekend with Cheye Alexander, who is returning from injury, is expected to take his place in defence but he may be lacking match sharpness. Something isn’t right with the Gills at the moment and the fact they are the joint-lowest scorers in the whole Football League along with Preston North End signals the lack of creativity they have in their ranks as they gear up for a tough trip to face a buoyant Grimsby outfit.

Rochdale v Leyton Orient
🏟
Tuesday 13th September – 7:45PM KO
Rochdale have made a tough start and will be dreading playing the league leaders Leyton Orient.
The Dale’s tough first month of the season saw them sack former boss Robbie Stockdale and bring in Jim Bentley to replace him. It looks like it will be a year of struggle for the North West club and they are bottom of the table after seven matches. They are yet to win and have picked up only two draws so far. Rochdale drew 3-3 away at Carlisle United away last time and their new manager said in an ‘ideal world’ he would’ve had six weeks to prepare for a new campaign but has been thrown straight into the deep end. On the injury front, striker Tahvon Campbell is available after returning from a broken foot. The former West Brom man hasn’t played since March but his side need him based on the fact they have struggled for goals. They have managed five in seven games, with three coming against Carlisle last weekend. Rochdale have also been leaking goals and have let in 12 which is the second-worst in the whole division so upcoming opponents will be rubbing their hands together ahead of their trip to Spotland.
Leyton Orient have been the best team in League Two so far and are three points clear ahead of Stevenage at the summit. They have a manager in Richie Wellens who knows what it takes to get out of the fourth tier having done it with Swindon Town in the past. The O’s have won six out of their opening seven matches and have drawn the other making them the only unbeaten team in the league. They beat Tranmere Rovers 2-0 last time out and Wellens said he was ‘buzzing’ with the result and he will want his side to carry on their impressive run of form this week. Injuries have been on their side over recent times which has helped their performances and the fact their clash against AFC Wimbledon was postponed on Saturday means their players can rest and be 100% ready for their trip to Rochdale. Attacker Aaron Drinan made the bench last time out after his injury woes and provides useful cover up top to Charlie Kelman and Paul Smyth. Leyton Orient have only let in four goals so far and Wellens has created an organised who all know their jobs and are tough to break down which bodes well ahead of their clash against Rochdale.

Stevenage v Newport County
🏟
Tuesday 13th September – 7:45PM KO
Stevenage have been the surprise package in League Two so far and have a great opportunity to keep up their impressive run of form against an inconsistent Newport County.
Boro have an experienced boss in Steve Evans and he has created a new-look squad at Broadhall Way who are performing well at the moment. They are 2nd behind Leyton Orient in the table and have lost only once in their opening seven league outings. Stevenage have won all of their home games so far against Stockport County, Rochdale and Carlisle United which shows they are a tough side to play on their own patch and have made their stadium a fortress. They beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 away last time out and Evans said it was a ‘great day’ for his team. On the selection front, winger David Amoo has been having fitness issues recently but the fact their fixture against Sutton United was postponed on Saturday has given him chance to get back up to speed. Even if he is fit, he will struggle to get into the team ahead of Jamie Reid and Luke Norris. Stevenage are in confident mood and have a settled starting XI at the moment as they eye another win. The fact they have scored 10 goals and have only conceded six times shows that you can’t bet against them doing so at the moment.
Newport have struggled since Michael Flynn left last year and his replacement James Rowberry lacks experience in the Football League. The former Cardiff City coach sees his team currently sat in 17th position after just two wins from seven matches. Things have gone stale at Rodney Parade and pressure could start to mount on their manager if he can’t turn it around. It doesn’t look like he will do though, with them losing 2-0 at home to newly promoted Grimsby Town in their last match. Rowberry said he was ‘agitated with the performance’ and that result won’t do his side’s confidence any good at all. To make matters worse, Newport will be without midfield pair Scot Bennett and Aaron Wildig for their tough trip to Stevenage which is a blow. Their experience will be missed in the middle of the park, especially with their likely replacements Nathan Moriah-Welsh and James Waite aged 20 and 23 respectively. The Exiles have only kept one clean sheet which doesn’t bode well for them as they prepare to face a Stevenage team who have a few different sources of goals. Boro have spread out the 10 goals they have scored across nine different players which shows how much threat they have in their squad.
