Been writing freelance long-form UFC breakdowns for over 7 years now, covering every UFC event and predicting at an accuracy of just under 70% this year.

UFC 322 takes place this Sunday morning at Madison Square Garden in New York, USA, and I've found some great value ahead of the Welterweight Title main event in the MMA Tips & Best Bets below.

6/1 UFC 322 Accumulator Tips

Fixtures for: Sunday 16th November

Leon Edwards (#4) v Carlos Prates (#9)

Welterweight

03:45

Carlos Prates to Win @ 1.50

Edwards has always been one of those fighters who reminds me of the story of Icarus, he flew too close to the sun (championship) and got burnt (over-confident). I believe Edwards will always be a fantastic fighter to watch, but he’s coming up against someone who has four inches of reach, a whole lot of power, and just has that menacing, threatening presence about him when he fights.

I do think Edwards might be able to give Prates enough things to worry about if the leg kick and teep kicks are there, as Edwards bases his strikes around his kicking game quite a bit, but the best way to neutralise a great kicker is to pressure them against the fence, shut down that range that they require to use those varied kicks, and counter those kicks with punches, and Prates is exceptionally good at doing all of those things!

I think we’re in for a changing of the guard here, where Edwards had his time at the top of the food chain, but now it’s time for the younger generation to take over, and Prates is part of that generation.

Sean Brady (#2) v Michael Morales (#8)

Welterweight

04:15

Sean Brady to Win @ 1.73

This fight seems somewhat easy to digest, at least on paper. Brady clearly has a huge advantage when it comes to both experience in the UFC and just style, he has the perfect style and skill set to negate Morales’ striking, and whilst there is quite a large reach discrepancy between both fighters, I have noticed that Morales does attack the head quite often, so expect his target preference to be used as a way for Brady to lure out an attack and go in for a level change.

Once on the ground, it should be somewhat easy for Brady to keep Morales down because Brady’s control over his opponents is second to none. Once he can ascertain the right position and grip to keep Morales down, then he’s going to attack the submission. Basically, expect Brady to do what Brady has done for all of his career, and that’s to waste a very little amount of time striking, get in close, wrap his arms not-so-lovingly around his opponents, slam them to the ground, and work his magic from there!

Valentina Shevchenko (C) v Weili Zhang

UFC Women's Flyweight Championship

04:45

Fight to Go the Distance @ 1.44

This has to be high on everyone's “must-watch” list, because you cannot say you’re a UFC fan if you don’t care about the legend Valentina Shevchenko taking on a top-tier talent like Weili Zhang!

First of all, both fighters are somewhat similar in style, Valentina is more of a counter striker whereas Zhang is someone who utilises feints and footwork to set up her strikes, and what that’s very likely to do during this hotly contested bout is make both fighters cautious of an approach, they’ll throw feints, react to things, but early on it’s unlikely that many strikes will land flush.

Valentina does have the speed advantage, and that could keep Zhang away, but what often happens in many of Zhang's fights is that she turns up the offense dial to 11 and lets her hands go with a long string of combinations, and that could be enough to overwhelm Shevchenko temporarily.

Rest assured, both fighters are exceptionally survivable and they’re both reasonably technical, and again, similar to the Della Maddalena v Makhachev bout, when legacy is on the line, when the belt it on the line, fewer mistakes are made, less risk is required, and the bout becomes an entertaining chess match.

I expect this one to hit the scorecards, I expect 25 minutes of fantastic action between two pivotal athletes in UFC Women’s MMA, and I expect this fight to be cemented in the Hall of Fame in the future!

Jack Della Maddalena (C) v Islam Makhachev

UFC Welterweight Championship

05:30

Over 3.5 Rounds @ 1.80

We are in for a treat with this one. Jack Della Maddalena is defending his title this weekend against the current “Boogeyman” of the UFC in Islam Makhachev, and I think this is going to be a lot closer than the moneyline odds suggest.

Della Maddalena is going to give Makhachev a whole heap of trouble on the feet, his boxing is fierce and his lateral movement is his first line of defence when it comes to defending takedowns, so expect to see Makhachev attempt to close the distance early to get those takedowns in, but also take note that Della Maddalena’s going to punish Makhachev every time Makhachev goes in for a takedown, as counter striking is always a fantastic deterrent against a highly aggressive wrestler.

On the flip side, Makhachev is moving up in weight, so if Makhachev does decide to keep the fight standing, he will put his thunderous power on full display, as previously he was a solid striker, but now he has that extra weight to his strikes that should give Della Maddalena a few things to think about!

I expect this one to go deep into the championship rounds. Both are highly talented fighters, top of their game, they both know the weight that this fight carries, so I don’t expect either fighter to risk too much and lose their chance of either retaining the belt or getting a shiny new one!
