Fuelled by a passion for sport and a sharp instinct for uncovering patterns in data, beating the bookies became the perfect outlet for my competitive streak. Now I take pleasure in sharing my finds with ABC punters. I enjoy finding niche angles and betting value in a range of markets and leagues, my favourite being in Serie A.

In this article...

Verona have looked poor at both ends, while Cremonese have been free-scoring but shaky at the back themselves. I think there’s some excellent value on offer - here’s how to exploit it.

Over 2.5 Goals

This game has all the signs of a thriller, and I expect to see the net ripple at least three times during the 90. This line has landed in both of Cremonese’s opening two matches, which produced three and five goals, respectively.

Verona’s underlying figures are promising, with their games producing 6.34xG so far, ranking 3rd in the league in that respect. That said, it’s worth mentioning that the bulk of that came last time round, as they were humiliated 4-0 by Lazio.

Last season, this selection came home in 58% of Verona’s home matches and 67% of Cremonese’s on the road. To put that into context, the bookies are implying a probability of just 44% given these odds.

It remains to be seen whether he will feature from the start, but new Cremonese signing Jamie Vardy could be worth looking at in the player shots markets, or even in the anytime goalscorer market.

Cremonese Double Chance

All evidence would also suggest that Cremonese stand a strong chance of extending their unbeaten start to the season.

Back-to-back wins against AC Milan and Sassuolo are encouraging to say the least, and while the former was unsurprisingly a graft, their dominance and chance creation in the latter imply they could be a force to be reckoned with this season.

The same cannot be said for Verona, whose sole point flatters them, if anything. Averaging just 33% possession and 0.74xG, the Gialloblù are failing to impose themselves on games, and I think it’s safe to say they’re not exactly compensating defensively.

  • Verona have picked up just a single point; meanwhile, Cremonese have recorded back-to-back wins, including against AC Milan.

  • Last time out, Lazio racked up 4.13xG against Verona - more than any other side has managed across both matches combined.

  • La Cremo rank 4th for xG (3.5), but also 4th worst for xGA (3.2).

🔵 Gialloblù Looking Like Early Strugglers

Verona kicked off their season with a dull 1-1 draw at home to Udinese. Chances came at a premium, with the hosts notching a mere 0.56xG and only 0.19 from open play. At no point did Verona gain a proper foothold; rather, they seemed content with sitting back for a draw.

Unfortunately, this option wasn’t available to them against a rampant Lazio, who punished their opponents dearly, hitting them for four with no reply.

Verona allowed Lazio to generate 4.13xG, which surpasses the season total of every other side. For further context, Verona shipped more xGA in that one match alone than 18 of Serie A’s 19 other sides have done across both opening matches.

High-Scoring Cremonese Amongst Serie A’s Most Entertaining

Cremonese, who have been in fine offensive form, will be licking their lips at this prospect. Only Inter can top the five goals they’ve notched since the start of the season, La Cremo also rank 4th for xG, with 3.5 to their name.

It would seem, however, that this has come at a cost, and a pretty substantial one at that. Other than Verona, only Sassuolo and Torino have conceded more xGA than Cremonese (3.2).

Similarly, the same aforementioned trio remain the only teams to have conceded more goals than Cremonese, who have let in three so far.

📊 Verona v Cremonese H2H

The last time these sides met was way back in the 22/23 season, Cremonese’s most recent stint in the top flight.

Verona edged the head-to-head that season, taking four points from six and generally looking the stronger outfit, even if the games themselves were pretty tight.
