Go Ahead Eagles v AZ Alkmaar
I write every time about Go Ahead’s unbeaten run, but it is worth talking about as some media outlets seem to be forgetting that the Eagles have the longest unbeaten run in the league.
Go Ahead will provide a big test for AZ on Wednesday. In-form Bobby Adekanye will be keen to show he has what it takes against the Eredivisie’s best after four goals and three assists in his last six games. Like Sparta Rotterdam, Go Ahead go with a tall striker up top surrounded by players with high levels of technical ability.
However, a home side on the front foot suits AZ nicely so that there is space on the counter attack. They have the bit between their teeth after beating Fortuna Sittard last weekend. You can see that the club is chasing something special given that the Eredivisie title race (and race to the Champions League spots) is so wide open.
This could set up a good game. AZ may have a new goalkeeper in Matt Ryan, but I suspect that they will concede yet score enough to see off the challenge of René Hake’s men.
Vitesse Arnhem v FC Twente
Vitesse head coach Phillip Cocu has been setting up rather defensively since his first game or two in charge. Originally switching the 5-3-2 for a 4-2-3-1, Cocu now elects to have two sitting midfielders in his formational tweak, and he has placed players who have previously played wing-back positions either side of his main striker.
At home to title-chasing Twente, Vitesse may want to line up with a solid team again. Twente are not as good away from home, which could ultimately be their downfall as they chase a surprise spot in the Eredivisie top four. Their only away wins thus far have been slender one-goal wins at NEC and Cambuur. On the other hand, you cannot deny that Twente are always a difficult side to score against. At the half-way stage of the season, they have still only conceded single figures (nine in seventeen).
All of this will lead to a tentative game which is low on goals. Vitesse are lacking quality and they are likely to sit deep with the pace of Million Manhoef on the counter attack their main outlet. Gijs Smal, his opponent down that wing, has enjoyed a good season though.
Fortuna Sittard v Heerenveen
In the last week, Fortuna have played PSV — scraping a last-minute 2-2 draw — and were well beaten by AZ (3-1). They had moments in both games, but were ultimately lacking the ability to keep the ball against their more illustrious opponents. The hosts have now only won one in nine games after the initial honeymoon period under new boss Julio Velazquez, which originally yielded plenty of points.
Heerenveen have struggled for goals this season despite sitting comfortably in the Europa Conference League play-off places. They have a strong back four and goalkeeper, which will be a strong foundation to get another good result after seeing off local rivals Groningen in the last game. Pawel Bochniewicz is having a great season at centre-back, right-back Milan van Ewijk is drumming up interest from the Premier League, and goalkeeper Andries Noppert has continued to excel since starring in the World Cup.
With Amin Sarr finally back amongst the goals, I would suggest it is unlikely that the visitors will lose on Wednesday. I would take them double chance at odds of 1.36. Fortuna are out of form, and Heerenveen are a level above what the Sittard outfit can offer. Heerenveen do not make many defensive mistakes, and I can see them keeping Burak Yilmaz and co quiet.
