📈 Brighton v West Ham Form & Tactics

Brighton’s loss against Aston Villa during the week was the first that they’ve suffered at home this season, with Fabian Hurzeler particularly frustrated by the manner of the defeat in his post-match press conference. Brighton were 2-0 up inside 29 minutes, thanks to a goal from Van Hecke and an own goal from Pau Torres. Villa then found a path back into the game, exposing Brighton’s high defensive line which has been the cause of many of their issues this season.

Brighton have won four of their seven matches at the Amex Stadium this season, so they are among the strongest sides at home in the Premier League. Only Arsenal (18) and Man City (19) have scored more goals at home than Brighton this season (15). But, Brighton have conceded 10 goals across these matches, the most of any side currently in the top 10 in the Premier League at home.

I was impressed with West Ham in their 1-1 draw with Man United. They were helped by Amorim being too cautious in taking off attacking players just before the Hammers scored their goal, but their overall performance deserved a draw, as they limited Man United to four shots on target.

The Hammers carry a very notable threat in transition, when players like Summerville return to fitness, this will be even more effective, and a blueprint for how West Ham should approach their away games in particular.

This isn’t surprising as Nuno Espírito Santo is an excellent coach, if you are content with a slightly pragmatic style at times. They can use their threat on the counter attack to their advantage here, with Brighton holding one of the highest defensive lines in the Premier League this term.

West Ham have only lost one of their last five matches in the Premier League, directly highlighting the impact that Nuno is having on the side.

📔 Brighton v West Ham Formation & Team News

Brighton line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but Hurzeler likes his side to be tactically flexible. The best example of this is the role of Mats Wieffer, who lines up as a right-back, but progresses into midfield when Brighton have the ball to create overloads. This could be particularly important as West Ham have been effective in shutting down those central areas under Nuno, so an extra body could tilt the scales in Brighton’s favour.

Brighton have a deep squad, but plenty of players are unavailable for Fabian Hurzeler here. The most notable absentee is Karou Mitoma, with as many as eight first team players facing a fitness race to be included for this clash.

West Ham have experimented with a few different shapes under Nuno Espírito Santo, but his preference is a 4-2-3-1 shape. West Ham have the players to play in this system as a counter attacking side, with Soucek offering an option to win second balls and Bowen providing the necessary speed to run beyond Brighton’s high line. The midfield duo of Magassa and Potts compliment each other very well, and that should be the starting duo for West Ham going forward.

West Ham’s biggest miss at the moment is Summerville. I feel like he would thrive in this system with his speed and 1v1 ability. West Ham will be a very dangerous side in transition with Bowen and Summerville on each wing when the Dutch winger does return to fitness.

📊 Brighton v West Ham Key Stats

  • Brighton have only lost one of their seven home games this season.

  • West Ham’s away games in the Premier League are seeing 11.0 match corners per game.

  • Only Arsenal (18) and Man City (19) have scored more goals at home than Brighton in the Premier League this season.

  • West Ham have only managed to win one of their seven away matches this season - but do enter this game with just one defeat from their last five.
