Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United Cheat Sheet
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United
Julian Lopetegui’s management of the club has gone well so far, with wins against Gillingham in the EFL Cup and Everton in the Premier League, however this will be their biggest test yet.
This is the start of an important run of games for Wolves where they play Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool, but also have important matches against Aston Villa, West Ham and Southampton.
It is worth remembering that even with that win against Everton, Wolves still sit in the relegation zone, although a win here could move them as high as 14th. Wolves had the boost of Jimenez being fit enough to be on the bench in their last match and he always improves the team when he plays.
Manchester United’s good form continued in their last match against Nottingham Forest with a comfortable 3-0 win which allowed them to give sub off and rest Martial, Antony, Eriksen, Varane and Rashford.
A win in this match will move Manchester United up into the top 4 above Spurs and don’t write off a potential title challenge yet, they are just 6 points behind Manchester City. Rashford also continued his fine form with a goal and an assist against Nottingham Forest, he has 3 goals in his last 4 matches and will be the main man again in this match.
Wolves may have back-to-back wins under Lopetegui however one was against the team bottom of League Two and the other was against a struggling Everton side who still managed to beat Wolves on xG 1.7-0.8. Wolves will need to be much improved in this match and with such a short turnaround between matches it would be a huge surprise for them to be a much improved team in this game.
On the other hand, Manchester United have lost just 2 league matches in their last 13 after losing their first 2 matches of the season and have won 7 of their last 8 in all competitions.
Despite Wolves being at home in this game, Manchester United should still be big favourites, Wolves have the second worst home record of any team in the league this season. At the price currently available on PaddyPower, Manchester United to win is great value.
Rashford is rejuvenated and seems a confident player again after the struggles of last season. His recent form for club and country have been extremely impressive and he is showing no signs of slowing down.
Rashford has averaged 1.11 shots on target per 90 this season with an averaged of 2.6 shots per match, however with his recent form these numbers are much higher, he has had 15 shots on target in his last 10 games, scoring in 5 of these matches.
In Wolves most recent match, Everton had 6 shots on target despite only averaging 3.5 shots on target per match so far this season. Gordon and Gray who have a similar style to Rashford both caused issues against Wolves both having a shot with Gordon’s on target.
Rashford is in a more dominant team that Everton and on much better form so he should be good enough for a shot on target in this match.
Wolves have a centre back pairing that are very strong aerially however this won’t be too much help against a striker like Anthony Martial. With Ronaldo leaving the club and having scored in the match against Nottingham Forest he will almost certainly start in this match.
Martial has had very limited minutes this season but has hit plenty of shots on target in the limited number of minutes he has played. He has averaged 1.7 shots on target per 90 in the Premier League this season and has averaged 2.11 shots on target per 90 across 3 Carabao Cup and Europa League matches. Martial has played over an hour of football in just 4 matches this season and had 2 shots on target in 3 of them and 1 in the other. Martial came off after 65 minutes against Nottingham Forest so he will be fully rested to start in this match.
Manchester United’s chance creation is improving a lot and he therefore gets more, higher quality chances which has seen him average 0.38 xG per match over the last 4 matches he has played. This shows he is getting himself in dangerous positions where he would expect to hit the target, therefore I am backing him for a shot on target in this match.
Manchester United are now seeing more control over matches, they had 66% possession against Nottingham Forest. Wolves had previously had quite high possession numbers under Bruno Lage but under the new manager against Everton, who have the 4th highest PPDA in the league, Wolves had just 42% possession. Lopetegui’s team are likely to struggle even more for possession in this game against Manchester United who press higher and keep the ball better.
Against Wolves James Tarkowski attempted 96 passes and Yeray Mina alongside him attempted 69 before he was subbed off in the 76th minute. While Raphael Varane has averaged just 47.3 passes per match this season, this has been brought down greatly as he has mainly appeared against top six teams where Manchester United have struggled for possession. Against Nottingham Forest in their last match he attempted 75 passes and if Wolves allow opposition centre backs as much possession as they did then he can easily match this number in this match.
