Wolves v Aston Villa
📅
Kick Off: Saturday 1st February at 17:30
🏆
Competition: Premier League
Relegation threatened Wolves welcome rivals Aston Villa to the Molineux Stadium, with Vitor Pereira’s side desperate to start picking up points in a relegation race that is getting slimmer as the weeks go on, this weekend looks to be a pivotal one with Everton playing Leicester and Ipswich hosting Southampton.
Unai Emery’s side secured automatic progression to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 4-2 win over Celtic in midweek, but will be wary of the European hangover that has caught up with his side on a few occasions already this season.
⭐ Wolves v Aston Villa Best Bet
Tielemans has won 38 fouls across his 23 Premier League appearances this season (1.75 per 90). The central midfielder was fouled 3 times in Aston Villa’s 4-2 win over Celtic midweek and has been hauled down at least once in 4 of his last 5 appearances in the Premier League.
Wolves’ frustration has boiled over a few times this season, only Bournemouth are committing more fouls per game in the Premier League than the Wanderers, who are averaging 13.2 fouls committed per game across their 23 PL fixtures. They committed 16 fouls in the initial meeting against Aston Villa at Villa Park – a contest in which Tielemans was fouled 3 times from 13 duels.
Aston Villa are averaging 13.0 fouls won per game across their 23 Premier League games this season, they’ve drawn at least 9 fouls from their opponents in each of their last 5 Premier League games, with this number rising to 11 in 4 of these fixtures. Tielemans will be up against Andre who is averaging 1.32 fouls committed per 90 across his 18 Premier League appearances this campaign.
🟢 Wolves v Aston Villa #WhatOddsPaddy Tip
Watkins has scored 10 goals for Aston Villa in the Premier League this season and will fancy his chances of adding to that tally against the 2nd worst defence in the division.
Wolves’ games are usually full of incident, they’ve seen 84 goals across their 23 Premier League games this season (3.65 per game). Their attacking ability is more reflective of a mid-table side, but it is their defensive organisation that has let them down this season, this trend is likely to continue against an Aston Villa side that saw 4 first half goals in their midweek victory over Celtic.
Wolves have been shown 49 yellow cards this season (2.13 per game), Villa aren’t too far behind with 48 cautions received this campaign, but Wolves should collect more cards here when considering the context of what this game could mean for their season and their high fouls average this campaign (13.2 per game). Wolves were shown 6 yellow cards to Villa’s 3 in the initial meeting between the sides at Villa Park earlier in the season.
👕 Wolves v Aston Villa Predicted XI

🔍 Wolves v Aston Villa Players to Watch
🟡 Matheus Cunha
Cunha is crucial to any chance Wolves have of staying up in the Premier League this season, the Brazilian has registered 14 goal contributions across his 22 Premier League appearances (10 goals, 4 assists) meaning that Cunha has directly been involved in 44% of Wolves’ total goals in the competition.
He scored Wolves’ only goal in the initial meeting between the sides, which ended in a 3-1 victory for Villa. Cunha is also on penalties for Wolves and boasts solid underlying numbers for chances created (37 – 1.86 per 90) and shots on target (26 – 1.31 per 90).
🟣 Ollie Watkins
Watkins is averaging 1.57 shots on target per 90 across his 23 Premier League appearances this season, a record that has resulted in 10 goals for the England international. We can expect his average to increase here against the Premier League’s 2nd weakest defence – only Southampton have conceded more goals (53) than the 52 Wolves have suffered this season.
Watkins scored and had 2 shots on target in the initial meeting between these sides at Villa Park and will fancy his chances of continuing his good form which has seen him score 3 times across his last 5 Premier League matches, against a side that is averaging just shy of 5.0 shots on target conceded per game.
🟡 Nelson Semedo
Nelson Semedo has collected more yellow cards than any other Wolves player this season (7). The fullback has played as part of a back 3 and as a wingback in Vitor Pereira’s set-up, but is expected to play as a wingback here. Aston Villa are very clever in the attacking areas of the pitch, Unai Emery instructs his side to be fluid and rotate to dismantle the opposition.
Semedo will be up against Jacob Ramsey who is averaging 1.31 fouls won per 90 across his 15 Premier League appearances this season and was fouled twice in the initial meeting between the sides earlier in the season.
Semedo committed 2 fouls and was shown a card in that meeting at Villa Park, the referee for this game is averaging 4.30 yellow cards per game across his 10 Premier League appointments so far this term.

💻 Wolves v Aston Villa Form and Tactics
Wolves have stuck with a 3-4-3 shape for the majority of the season, this shape is supposed to provide structure in theory, but Vitor Pereira’s side are anything but secure. Wolves’ main issue is in the wingback areas, especially on the left side with Rayan Ait-Nouri who is a fantastic player going forward but lacks positional discipline.
Wolves do have quite a potent attack for their league position, only Brentford have scored more goals (42) in the bottom half of the table than the 32 Wolves have managed this campaign suggesting that it isn’t a lack of attacking threat that has been costing them this season.
Aston Villa line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape with the back 4 and midfield 2 instructed to stay very solid and compact, with more fluidity and space for creativity in the final third. There are rotations in the final third which is where Villa can really get their success against a disorganised Wolves backline. Ramsey, Rogers and Bailey move across the pitch to create options for the likes of Tielemans and Kamara to find them in between the lines, with all the attacking players given the freedom to rotate.
They are supported by a busy Ollie Watkins who has the ability to stretch sides and give the 3 players in behind him the opportunity to get on the ball.
Wolves have lost their last 3 games in the Premier League, but these have been against tough opposition in Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal, whilst Aston Villa haven’t been the most consistent either with just 2 wins across their last 5 games in all competitions coming against Celtic and Everton.
It’s worth noting that Aston Villa have struggled this season in games after a European gameweek, they’ve only managed to win 1 of their games this season after a game in Europe which came against Wolves back in September.
