Manchester United welcome Wolves with Ruben Amorim’s side hoping to build on their 1-0 win over Newcastle last time out.

Wolves suffered their 16th defeat of the season against Liverpool at the weekend as the evidence continues to stack against their survival chances. No side has conceded more goals in the Premier League this season than Wolves (39).

📈 Man United v Wolves Form & Tactics

Manchester United kept just their second clean sheet of the season against Newcastle last time out, with even that shut out relying on Lammens making three saves and Newcastle failing to convert one of their 16 shots, with an xG of 1.18.

It was still a chaotic performance from Manchester United who have only won two of their last five matches in the Premier League, with the other victory coming against Wolves. Manchester United’s home games have been very entertaining this season with 29 goals across the nine matches (3.22 per game), suggesting that we should get another high scoring clash here.

This is a really important game for Manchester United in the context of the race for a European spot in the Premier League. A win here could take them above Chelsea, if results go their way, which would represent a real improvement from this United side who look to be maturing into a team that can challenge for a spot in the Champions League next season.

Wolves did put up a fight in their 2-1 defeat against Liverpool at the weekend, but once again we are left talking about the lack of quality in the Wolves squad - particularly in forward areas. Rob Edwards has managed to get them into a semi decent defensive shape, which we know was possible from their performances last season, but Edwards hasn’t been able to change the Wanderers’ fortunes in the final third.

Wolves have only scored 10 goals across their 18 matches in the Premier League this season - which is the lowest by some distance. This record worsens on the road with Wolves only netting three goals across their nine away games this season, suggesting that United could end up with a similar scoreline to the win they registered a few weeks ago at Molineux where they ran out 4-1 winners.

📔 Man United v Wolves Formation & Team News

Ruben Amorim has been forced into changing his system, though it’s not exactly clear what he’s replacing it with. It took me a good 10 minutes to work out United’s shape against Newcastle, but it was a blend between a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-4 with the latter shape being the structure that United operated in gor most of the game.

Ironically, Manchester United looked a lot more secure with this shape - but did have to give up some of their attacking flair in the absence of Fernandes, Amad and Mbuemo. I’d question the sustainability of this approach as United only had 33% of the ball in that game against Newcastle, and only fashioned one big opportunity.

Patrick Dorgu is worth keeping an eye on here if he continues in the right wing role he took up in United’s win over Newcastle. That was probably his brightest performance in a United shirt so far, and he may be generously priced for shots or shots on target here with some bookmakers if they haven’t accounted for this recent switch in role.

Wolves lined up with a 3-4-3 against Liverpool at Anfield and put in one of their better performances under Rob Edwards, despite losing 2-1. The shape of the Wanderers isn’t actually that important, they lack quality in key areas - and I’d also question the motivation and fight of some of the players in the squad.

Mateus Mane is worth keeping an eye on for Wolves here. He made his first Premier League start against Liverpool at the weekend, with Edwards leaving him on the pitch for the entire 90. He looked bright and was willing to try and cause problems on his own, with four shots in the game and five passes into the final third. He’s only 18, but it looks like Edwards trusts him and the former Luton boss isn’t exactly spoiled for choice when it comes to forward options.
