📈 Wrexham v Chelsea Form & Stats

Wrexham are welcoming Chelsea at the right time, with Phil Parkinson’s side coming into this game having avoided defeat in each of their last five matches across all competitions. Wrexham have already battled past Premier League opposition in the FA Cup this season, beating Nottingham Forest on penalties after a crazy 3-3 draw during regular time. Wrexham also beat Ipswich in the next round of the FA Cup to set up this clash against a Chelsea side that is progressing steadily under Rosenior.

Arsenal remain the only side to have beaten Chelsea under Rosenior, though it will irk Rosenior that the Gunners have managed to get the better of the Blues in all three of the recent meetings between the sides. Dropped points at home to Leeds and Burnley could also prove costly in the race for the Champions League spots, but this is a competition that Chelsea should be taking seriously - the Blues have not lifted a domestic trophy since their FA Cup triumph under Antonio Conte.

Wrexham should be cautiously optimistic coming into this game, given that they are taking on Chelsea at a time when this game may not be their main priority. Chelsea take on PSG in the Champions League during the week, and have already had to make the trip to Villa Park ahead of this clash, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rosenior rotate his side quite heavily for this clash.

📔 Wrexham v Chelsea Formation & Team News

Wrexham are expected to line up in a 3-4-3 shape, which isn’t great news for Chelsea. Wrexham will be as direct as possible, and this is where the Blues can struggle - no Premier League side has conceded a greater percentage of their goals from set pieces than Chelsea this season, which highlights their issues with defending set pieces pretty well.

Wrexham will be aware of this and have registered 8+ corners in each of their two FA Cup ties this season against Ipswich and Nottingham Forest. Wrexham can cause Chelsea these issues, but they should also be wary of the quality that Chelsea have, which has led them to score nine goals across their two FA Cup ties this season, with both of these games being on the road against Championship sides.

Wrexham are expected to be without Ben Sheaf, while Liberato Cacace and Matthew James are doubts for this match. The player to watch from a Wrexham point of view is Oliver Rathbone. He’s been playing just behind the striker in recent weeks and has notably picked up a card or scored in three of his last five appearances for Wrexham.

Chelsea will rotate for this cup tie, and the Blues’ previous cup ties against Hull and Charlton give us a decent example of what the Chelsea team may look like. Marc Guiu or Liam Delap should come in to give Joao Pedro a rest after his hat-trick against Aston Villa, while players like Fernandez, Caicedo, and Palmer are also set to earn a rest.
