While favourites Belgium are expected to set the standard in Group E, second spot is up for grabs and both Romania and Ukraine will believe they have the credentials to qualify for the knockout phase alongside Les Diables Rouges.
That makes Romania and Ukraine’s matchday one meeting in Munich all the more pivotal and a win for either side would provide a significant boost in the race for qualification.
Romania v Ukraine Best Bets
Though Romania’s steely defensive and risk-averse approach is likely to keep margins slim in Munich on Monday, Ukraine’s superior goal-getting prowess could eventually tell and a single moment of magic from one of their star performers could be enough to win.
Romania scored one or fewer goals in four of their last six assignments and their lack of cutting edge in the final third could be their undoing against a Ukrainian outfit equipped with sharper finishers. Ukraine are available to back at an attractive price to win.
Elsewhere, Romanian anchorman Razvan Marin looks like a good candidate in the over 1.5 fouls market. Marin committed more fouls (12) than any of his teammates during Romania’s qualification campaign and his tough-tackling approach should put him in the thick of the action again.
Ukraine’s Artem Dovbyk is also worth considering to score or assist on Monday. The 26-year-old notched in each of Ukraine’s final two pre-Euro 2024 friendly games against Poland and Moldova, while his haul of 32 goal contributions (24G, 8A) in 32 starts for Girona in La Liga last time highlights a consistent ability to provide match-changing moments.

⚔️ Romania v Ukraine Head-to-Head
Romania and Ukraine aren’t exactly familiar foes and they have never faced off in a competitive fixture before.
However, the continental neighbours share a border and their close proximity has made them handy friendly opponents on occasion and Romania and Ukraine have met six times since 2000 in that capacity.
Their last skirmish in May 2016 produced seven goals in a 4-3 Ukraine triumph, though a similarly open contest is unlikely to develop in Monday’s rematch.
Romania came out on top in the first three of the nations’ friendly bouts between 2001 and 2003, though Ukraine have gone unbeaten since, hinting at a shift in the balance of power between the sides.
📊 Romania Form and Stats
Having won only once in 16 attempts at the Euros in their entire history, Romania are short on pedigree, though there is a quiet confidence about them ahead of their first major tournament since Euro 2016.
Romania qualified for Euro 2024 with an unblemished, unbeaten record and their success in the pre-tournament running was built on disciplined defending.
Drilled into shape by promising young coach Edward Iordănescu, the robust Romanians conceded only five goals in 10 qualification fixtures in Group I to claim top spot in the section ahead of an experienced Switzerland outfit.
Romania shipped an average of just 0.50 goals per 90 in their group and only big-hitting Portugal (0.20) and France (0.38) fared better in that regard. They also conceded just 10.30 shots and 3.50 shots on target per game, further highlighting the quality of their defence.
Tottenham’s Radu Drăgușin and Al-Okhdood’s Andrei Burcă, formed an ever-present centre-back pairing at the back for Romania in their qualification group, while midfielder Răzvan Marin provided a reliable screening presence in front of the back four.
Romania’s only loss in 15 previous international matches overall came in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Colombia in March, while their last reverse in a competitive fixture came all the way back in June 2022 when they came unstuck in the Nations League against Montenegro (0-3), so expect them to be tough to beat.
Their final two pre-Euros warm-up fixtures against Liechtenstein (0-0) and Bulgaria (0-0) allowed Romania to showcase their robust defensive set-up again, though they did fire blanks in both of those winnable tests and scoring goals remains an issue.
Six of the 16 goals they scored in qualifying were notched in two sittings against whipping boys Andorra, while first-choice striker, George Pușcaș (11), has registered just once in 12 appearances for his country.
📊 Ukraine Form and Stats
Ukraine’s route to qualification for Euro 2024 was a complicated one and they need late interventions in playoff fixtures against both Bosnia and Herzegovina to book their berth in Germany this summer.
The Ukrainians developed a penchant for drama during their qualification campaign, falling behind in six of their ten fixtures between the group stage and the playoffs, but rebounding to win four of the same games.
Still, despite their entry through the back door, Ukraine have the potential to be a formidable force in Germany and they’ve been earmarked as a dark horse for deep progression in the tournament by many observers.
With several starlets from their 2019 Under-20 World Cup winning squad drip-feeding into the senior picture, Ukraine have eye-catching talent in several departments to support more senior players like centre-forward, Artem Dovbyk, who was a Golden Boot winner in La Liga last season for third-placed Girona.
His club teammate Viktor Tsyhankov is a dangerous creative force in midfield, while Bournemouth’s Illya Zabarnyi, Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin and Shakhtar Donetsk’s in-demand Heorhiy Sudakov are other players of real promise.
Dovbyk, Tsyhankov and Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk lodged ten goal contributions between them during Ukraine’s qualification push. That trio could do some damage on matchday one against Romania.
Ukraine took points off both England and Italy in their qualification group and held Germany to a 0-0 draw in a friendly encounter in June, results that suggest they can mix it with big names at Euro 2024.
They did concede 68 shots over four meetings with England and Italy in Group C however, which suggests some tightening of the screws is required at the back, especially if Ukraine make it to the latter stages this summer.
Ukraine signed off with a thumping 4-0 win over Moldova before jetting into Germany with usual suspects Tsyhankov, Dovbyk and Sudakov getting in on the act, so they should be ready to hit the ground running on Monday.
