We proved at the World Cup in 2022, that there is always value to be found backing a longshot in international tournaments, and with Group E looking wide-open, this may be the place to look for an underdog who could shock the continent. English football fans will be more familiar than most with Ukraine’s road to Euro 2024, with the Eastern European nation having battled with Italy for the runners-up spot in Group C, ultimately falling short on head-to-head results after both sides finished with 14 points.
That saw Ukraine enter the play-offs, where they beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 2-1 in the semi-final, before defeating Iceland 2-1 in the final to return to the Euros finals for the fourth successive edition, having first qualified in 2012.
The Blue and Yellow are second-best in Group E according to the FIFA World Rankings and the bookies like that estimate too, making Ukraine second-favourites to qualify from Group E, available at 1.25.
Their strong showing in qualifying proved they will not be pushovers, securing ‘home’ draws against England and Italy in games played on neutral ground because of the ongoing war in the country, and whilst runners-up in the group is generally expected to be the best they can do, that would still in all likelihood lead to a winnable game against either the Netherlands or Austria, making Ukraine to qualify for the quarter-finals at 3.50 an intriguing prospect.
Girona pair Viktor Tsyhankov and Artem Dovbyk are the players to watch here, with six goal contributions between them in what was a tough qualifying campaign. Dovbyk has hit a shot on target in four of his last five competitive starts for his nation, whilst Tsyhankov has three goals in six competitive games for Ukraine, all from the wing or midfield.
With Dovbyk experiencing a breakout campaign at Girona and leading the La Liga scoring charts, he could well burst onto the international stage here too and is a good option for goals and shots on target for your group stage bet builders.
