One player who could fall foul of the referee when trying to keep tabs on the aforementioned Rafael Leao is the Czech Republic’s Tomas Soucek. The West Ham midfielder will be assigned plenty of defensive work on Tuesday night when trying to keep star-studded Portugal at bay. Having averaged 1.75 fouls per game during qualifying, Soucek looks worth siding with to commit two or more fouls.

It would be fair to say that the Czech Republic didn’t pull up many trees during qualifying when finishing second in a section that included Albania, Poland, Moldova, and the Faroe Islands.

The Lions won just four of their eight qualifying matches, though they did only lose once, highlighting just how tough a nut they are to crack.

In fact, being rock-solid at the back was the foundation for the Czechs’ qualifying success, as they conceded just six goals across their eight qualifying assignments, giving up chances equating to just 0.84 xG. While a robust rearguard should stand Ivan Hasek’s side in good stead this summer, facing the might of Portugal in their Group F opener will be a daunting prospect.

That being said, the Czech Republic have been in fine fettle of late, posting a perfect five wins from their last five matches.

After missing the entire qualifying campaign due to injury, Patrik Schick is back in the fold and raring to go. The Bayer Leverkusen striker – who was the joint top goalscorer at Euro 2020 – made the net bulge in the Lions’ final pre-Euro 2024 warm-up match against North Macedonia.
