The Madrid derby takes place on Sunday night, and there is little to split the two sides in terms of recent form. It’s a second v third clash in La Liga, and Real Madrid are nine points above Atletico.
There were 0 cards shown when these sides last met, but that was a Spanish Supercup contest. Prior to that, Javier Alberola Rojas dished out nine cards when these two met in the league.

A £10 bet on this bet builder returns £50 if it wins.
📈 Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid Form & Stats
Xavi Simons’ penalty in the 90th minute condemned Atletico to a 3-2 defeat midweek, but they won’t care at all - Diego Simeone’s men did enough to secure progression to the next stage of the Champions League with a 7-5 win on aggregate. Atletico have only failed to win two of their last eight matches across all competitions - one was against Spurs, and the other was against Barcelona.
That game finished 3-0 at the Nou Camp, but Atletico won 4-0 in the first leg, so again, they did enough to progress in the Copa del Rey despite the defeat. Atletico are in a rich vein of form at the minute, and a win here would see the gap on Real Madrid reduce to just six points.
Real Madrid also have every reason to be confident, after they won 2-1 against Man City on Tuesday night. They brushed past Pep Guardiola’s men, winning 5-1 on aggregate, making it four wins on the trot.
Bernardo Silva was sent off early on midweek, but Madrid were the dominant side in the tie, and Vinicius Junior bagged himself a brace at the Etihad. Real Madrid racked up 3.14xG from the 14 shots in that match, which shows how effective they were going forward.
📔 Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid Formation & Team News
Their threat in the final third only looks set to increase, as Kylian Mbappe made his return from injury with a brief cameo off the bench. The Frenchman could be in contention to start up front alongside Vinicius Junior here.
The one bit of bad news from the Etihad was that Thibaut Courtois suffered a leg injury, which is expected to keep him out for some time. Andriy Lunin should deputise in between the sticks in his absence this weekend.
Atletico Madrid will also be without their first-choice keeper here, but Diego Simeone otherwise has a minimal injury list to contend with. He could go with a very similar eleven to that which started midweek, but Koke will hope to return to midfield, which could see Marcos Llorente feature in a role at right back. Pubill will also be pushing for a return to the starting eleven this weekend.
