Aberdeen will resume their Europa Conference League campaign when they take on AEK Larnaca in Cyprus on Thursday evening.

After coming away empty-handed from each of their opening two matches, Jimmy Thelin's side sit bottom of the Conference League standings.

In contrast, AEK Larnaca are up in the lofty heights of second-place courtesy of back-to-back victories.

The hosts will be quietly confident about extending that streak to three victories when they face an Aberdeen team that were thrashed 6-0 by AEK Athens on matchday two.

AEK Larnaca to Win

Having impressively beaten both AZ Alkmaar and Crystal Palace across the opening two rounds of league phase fixtures, I would expect AEK Larnaca to prove too strong for Aberdeen on Thursday evening. Imanol Idiakez’s side have won four of their five continental contests at home this season, defeating the likes of AZ, Partizan Belgrade and Legia Warsaw, and I think Aberdeen will represent a downgrade on those challenges.

As mentioned, the struggling visitors were humbled 6-0 by AEK Athens in Greece two weeks ago, while they also suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat away at FCSB in a Europa League qualifier.

Over 2.5 Goals

Aberdeen’s European games have been goal-heavy this season, mainly due to their defensive shortcomings. The Dons’ opening two defeats have generated 5 and 6 match goals respectively, with Jimmy Thelin's team conceding a whopping 9 of those strikes. What’s more, each leg of Aberdeen’s Europa League play-off tie broke the over 2.5 goal barrier.

Meanwhile, four of Larnaca’s five European matches at home this season have produced three goals or more, with the hosts firing in 4 strikes in two of their previous three, and I think they could do similar damage against what is a fragile Aberdeen team.

📈 AEK Larnaca v Aberdeen Form & Stats

AEK Larnaca caused a massive upset by earning a 1-0 win away at pre-tournament favourites Crystal Palace on matchday two. Imanol Idiakez’s side also claimed an eye-catching victory in their opening league phase assignment, sweeping aside AZ Alkmaar 4-0 at this venue.

AEK Larnaca won the Cypriot Super Cup last midweek, defeating Pafos on penalties following a 1-1 draw inside 90 minutes. The Yellow-Greens have since earned a 2-1 win away at Apollon in the Cypriot First Division. The result leaves Larnaca lying 5th in the table, five points behind league leaders Omonia Nicosia.

Only AEK Athens (7) have scored more goals than AEK Larnaca (6) in this season’s Europa Conference League.

AEK Larnaca have blanked in just one of their nine Cypriot First Division matches this season, not to mention they have made the net bulge in all bar one of their 10 continental contests this term.

After collecting just one point from their opening six Scottish Premiership games of the season, Aberdeen have started to get their act together in recent weeks, triumphing in three of their last four league matches. It’s worth noting that the Dons managed to keep a clean sheet in each of those three victories.

However, Jimmy Thelin's team have been anything but watertight in Europe this season, leaking 9 goals across their opening two Conference League matches. On top of that, the Dons’ defence was breached a combined total of 5 times across their Europa League play-off tie with FCSB.

The Scottish outfit have conceded at least one goal in each half of the game in all four of their matches in Europe this season.

Aberdeen have lost the corner count in three of their four European outings this season, including each of their two games away from home.
