Rangers will have to lift themselves up off the canvas when they welcome Roma to Ibrox in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Light Blues will still be licking their wounds after they fell to a 3-1 extra-time defeat against Celtic in a Scottish League Cup semi-final tie on Sunday.

Danny Rohl’s team will now turn their attention towards trying to salvage their Europa League campaign. As for Roma, they will arrive in Glasgow off the back of a 1-0 defeat away at AC Milan in Serie A on Sunday.

Roma Double Chance

Rangers have endured a nightmare start to their Europa league campaign. The Gers have already come away empty-handed from clashes with Genk, Sturm Graz and Brann, so it's difficult to envisage that changing against a Roma side that will undoubtedly represent their toughest test to date. As such, I'm more than happy to side with Roma on the double chance on Thursday night.

While the visitors have also made a ropey start to their Europa League campaign, they did earn a 2-1 win away from home against Nice on matchday one. What’s more, Gasperini’s side have won seven of their 10 matches in Serie A this season, triumphing in four of their five games away from home.

While Rangers have shown some signs of improvement under Danny Rohl in their last three matches, there are glaring issues in the squad that the German has inherited, and I think toppling Roma will be too big of an ask for the home team.

Rangers 4+ Corners

Unlike Rangers’ recent home games, I think the atmosphere inside Ibrox on Thursday night will be more like that of what we have become accustomed to over the last few years. As such, I think a minimum of four corners should be well within range for the hosts.

Despite their troubled start to the season, Rangers have been consistently hitting impressive corner kick numbers. The Light Blues have won the corner count in each of their opening three matches in this season’s Europa League, hitting 4 or more on each occasion. It's also worth noting that Rangers racked up 9 flag kicks during the home leg of their Champions League play-off tie with Club Brugge back in August. What’s more, Rangers have averaged almost 8 corners per 90 in this season’s Scottish Premiership.

While Roma have not been conceding too many corners for the most part this season, they have been forced to defend 7 and 6 flak kicks during recent away days at AC Milan and Sassuolo, further strengthening the case for Rangers to earn at least four on Thursday night.

Nicolas Raskin to have 1+ Shots

I think Nicolas Raskin continues to be overlooked by the bookmakers in the player shots market, making the Rangers ace an attractive option to attempt at least one effort on Thursday night.

The Belgian international has posted 5 attempts on goal across his three appearances for Rangers in this season’s Europa League, including 2 away at Brann on matchday three. What’s more, Raskin has averaged 1.55 shots per 90 in the Scottish Premiership this season, registering a minimum of 1 attempt in all bar one of his last five appearances, while he delivered 1 on-target effort against Celtic at Hampden on Sunday.

With that in mind, coupled with the fact that Roma are conceding a combined average of 9.85 shots per game across both Serie A and the Europa League this season, I think Rangers’ star man represents terrific value to try his luck once or more on Thursday night.

Matias Soule to have 1+ Shots on Target

Look for Matias Soule to hit the target at least once at Ibrox on Thursday night. The Roma attacker has frequently been deployed in a more central role this season, something that has coincided with him hitting the target on a regular basis.

In fact, Soule has averaged 1.55 on-target efforts per 90 in the Europa League this term, hitting the target a minimum of once in each of his three outings to date. It’s been a similar story as far as Serie A is concerned, with the Argentine ace averaging 1.10 shots on target per game, making the net bulge 3 times across his 10 appearances thus far.

Therefore, Soule looks like a strong contender to work Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland once or more during this contest. Moreover, the Gers have conceded an alarming average of 6.67 on-target efforts per game in this season’s Europa League.

📈 Rangers v Roma Form & Tactics

Rangers currently find themselves rooted to the foot of the Europa League table after crashing to defeat in each of their opening three matches. The Light Blues have already lost to Genk, Sturm Graz and Brann, which doesn't bode well ahead of a visit from Roma.

Danny Rohl has made a mixed start to life in the Ibrox dugout. The new Gers boss saw his side get blitzed 3-0 by Brann on his debut before steering his team to back-to-back wins over Kilmarnock and Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership. Rohl then got his first taste of an Old Firm derby on Sunday, with his team succumbing to a 3-1 defeat against Celtic after extra-time.

Rangers received their 4th red card of the season during Sunday's 3-1 semi-final defeat against Celtic. 2 of those 4 red cards have come on continental duty this season, including the Gers’ matchday one clash with Genk at Ibrox.

Listed among the pre-tournament favourites to win this season’s Europa League, Roma’s start to their continental campaign has left a lot to be desired. After hitting the ground running with a 2-1 win away at Nice, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have since slumped to shock home defeats against both Lille and Viktoria Plzen. That return means Roma are languishing way down in 23rd spot in the Europa League standings.

On the domestic front, Roma are sitting 4th in the table and just one point off top spot after winning seven of their opening 10 Serie A matches of the season. However, it’s worth noting that the capital club suffered their third league defeat of the campaign when going down 1-0 at AC Milan on Sunday.

Interestingly, Roma have yet to draw a game in either Serie A or the Europa League this season.

📔 Rangers v Roma Formation & Team News

After setting up with a 4-2-3-1 formation for his first match in charge against Brann, Danny Rohl has opted for different variations of a back three in each of Rangers’ subsequent three matches. Rohl has also shown that he is adaptable during games, switching to a four man defence in the second-half of Sunday's 3-1 loss to Celtic.

Connor Barron could come back into the Rangers team after serving a suspension on Sunday. Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell, Nedim Bajrami and Rabbi Matondo have all been left out of Rangers’ Europa League squad.

Gian Piero Gasperini is well renowned for using a fluid 3-4-3 formation, although it can often resemble a 3-5-2 system, as was the case against AC Milan last time out.

Roma are set to be without influential forward Paulo Dybala who suffered an injury during Sunday’s 1-0 loss to AC Milan. The Serie A giants will also be without injured duo Angelino and Evan Ferguson for Thursday night’s clash at Ibrox.
