Crystal Palace have won so many admirers over the last year or so with their FA Cup win, excellent Premier League performances, and next stage development of talents such as Eberechi Eze, Jean-Phillipe Mateta, and Adam Wharton, but they have to come back from a disappointing defeat to AEK Larnaca last time out against a well respected Dutch outfit.

Our Football Match Stats, including Crystal Palace v AZ Alkmaar, provide further insight.

Over 4.5 Crystal Palace Corners

Crystal Palace may only average 4.41 corners across all matches this season, but there are reasons why this is a good bet.

Firstly, cutting that sample to only home matches nudges that figure up to 5.33 corners on average, which already makes this bet a lot more palatable.

Also, the Conference League home matches that Crystal Palace have played have seen them win seven corners against Fredrikstad and then eight corners against AEK Larnaca.

They have also been on a good run of corner winning corners, they have won 20 corners in their last three home games, and they have beaten the chosen line here in seven out of nine home matches as well.

For their part, AZ are also a good foil for this bet. In the Conference League they have played four away ties including qualifiers. In these matches they conceded four corners away at Finnish club Ilves, but then five at Vaduz, who play in the Swiss second tier, nine at Levski Sofia, and six at AEK Larnaca.

Sven Mijnans to have 1+ Shots

This price on Mijnans for a single shot looks a total steal.

He is behind only centre forward Troy Parrott in terms of overall shot volume for AZ this season, averaging over three shots a match, 3.31 to be precise.

He is a key player for AZ and is likely to play the full 90 minutes, giving him the maximum amount of time to get a shot off.

His season shot map shows how busy he has been in terms of getting shots off, but also shows that he is happy to shoot from outside the box as well as getting into more advantageous shooting positions from central inside the box.

His last five matches read 5,5,6,1,4 in terms of shots taken. He took six shots in the last Conference League match against Slovan Bratislava.

Peter Koopmeiners to Commit 2+ Fouls

I like the price on Koopmeiners to make a couple of fouls in the midfield for AZ in this match.

The younger brother of Juventus’ Teun, has committed exactly two fouls for four matches in a row leading into this match, a run which includes their last Conference League match against Slovan Bratislava.

Indeed, Koopmeiners is AZ’s most frequent fouler of players who are regular starters over AZ’s last 30 matches. Over that sample size he has averaged 1.72 fouls per 90.

Central midfield is often an area in which fouls are regularly committed as the teams battle for control of the match. Crystal Palace are very strong in wide areas but that can only be effective if they control the central area.

Koopmeiners is likely to be directly up against Daichi Kamada, and the Japanese is a player who often draws fouls. He averages 1.3 fouls against him over Palace’s last 30 matches.

AZ Alkmaar 2+ Cards

AZ Alkmaar average 2.2 cards per 90 over their last 30 matches in all competitions. This raises to 2.38 yellow cards per 90 when only looking at AZ’s eight match Conference League run that they have been on this season.

Six of their eight matches in this competition have seen AZ go over this 1.5 card line, which is very relevant given the difference in officiating on the continent as opposed to domestically.

Another big aspect of this is what we are seeing happen at Selhurst Park this season. In Palace’s home games, they are averaging only one booking per game, but their opponents are getting heavily cautioned. Visitors are averaging 2.78 cautions per 90 this season, with eight of nine matches going over the chosen line here. Both Larnaca and Fredrikstad received two cautions on their visits to Selhurst Park in the Conference League.

📈 Crystal Palace v AZ Alkmaar Form & Tactics

Crystal Palace had an excellent week domestically as they dumped Liverpool out of the EFL Cup, and then took three Premier League points at home to Brentford, scoring five goals to none in reply. That stopped a run of four games without a win, which itself ended an unbeaten start to the season in all competitions.

Palace have a little bit of work to do in the Europa League though. The surprise defeat at home to AEK Larnaca as made it a little tricky to qualify in the top eight as I’m sure that Glasner and the club would have been aiming for prior to the competition beginning.

They have some of the best metrics in the Premier League, especially going forwards. They are in the top three for xG created, shots on target, big chances created, and touches in opponents’ box.

AZ come into this match in great form. They have won five in a row, one of which was a 2-0 win at Ajax, and another was a win over Slovan Bratislava in this competition. That win meant that they got off the mark in the league phase of the Conference League, meaning that Palace and AZ go into this match level on points.

They are currently third in the Eredivisie having lost only once in the league this season. They sit second for xG creation in the league, and back that up by being third for shots on target, fifth for big chances created, and second for touches in the opposition box. Impressively, they pair this with being second in the league for xG conceded as well, so they are an all-round package.

📔 Crystal Palace v AZ Alkmaar Formation & Team News

We can be very confident that Palace will lineup in their 3-4-2-1 formation that has been so successful for Oliver Glasner with this group of players. With the defeat to Larnaca and the respect that they will undoubtedly give to AZ, I would expect to see a strong selection as well. This will mean Daniel Munoz probably starting at right wing-back, and he gives real drive and speed in that position, which makes the formation work.

Jefferson Lerma could be preferred in central midfield, and Borna Sosa might be given a chance over Tyrick Mitchell at left wing-back. Jean-Phillipe Mateta is likely to continue starting here, but Eddie Nketiah is a great option to have, though it would necessitate a slight change in style.

We are expecting AZ to go with quite a traditionally Dutch 4-3-3 with wide forwards, a central forward in former Tottenham youth prospect Troy Parrott, and a flexible midfield three. They tend to play with the ball where possible, they average 52% possession over their last 30 matches, but are also happy to cede possession where necessary and spring on the break with their quick wide men.

AZ continue to have a couple of long term absentees who won’t be available for this match, including Maxx Meerdink and former Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie, who both would’ve impacted the first team, but they have no new injury concerns from their recent squad.
