Andorra v England
Kick Off: Saturday 7th June at 17:00
Competition: World Cup Qualifying
Thomas Tuchel will be hoping to continue his seamless start to life as England coach when the Three Lions travel to Andorra for their first away assignment under the new manager.
The latest England squad has some interesting selections, including a first call-up for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah and Ivan Toney coming back into the squad for the first time since he made the move to the Saudi Pro League.

There has long been discussion as to where Declan Rice is most effective with some suggesting that he offers more as a holding midfielder, while others highlight his effectiveness in the final third which suits more of a box-to-box role. From the England squad selection, and the first few performances from Rice under Tuchel, it seems like the former Chelsea boss sees Rice in a more box-to-box role, which should aid his chances of getting shots away here.
Rice has shown attacking promise in both of England’s WCQ games under Thomas Tuchel so far. He created five chances against Albania last time out and created three as well as having a shot in England’s first qualifying game against Latvia. These numbers suggest that Rice is regularly involved in the final third, something which is backed up by his numbers for Arsenal in the Premier League this season.
Rice averaged 1.52 shots per 90 across his 35 appearances for Arsenal during the 24/25 Premier League this season, with this record returning four goals for the 26-year-old. Arteta also prefers Rice in a slightly more advanced role, and his quality took centre stage in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Real Madrid in which he scored two spectacular free kicks.
With the inclusion of Curtis Jones and Jordan Henderson, there should be opportunities for Rice to push on and join the attack. This should be particularly obvious against a side like Andorra, who are the lowest-ranked side in the group (173) and have lost each of their opening two WCQ games without scoring. Only Harry Kane (three) scored more goals than Rice (two) during England’s Nations League B campaign. Rice averaged 1.0 shots per 90 across those six games.

⚪ Bukayo Saka

Thomas Tuchel hasn’t had the opportunity to use Saka yet as he was injured during the most recent international break, so this will be the Arsenal winger’s first opportunity to impress the new coach.
There is plenty of competition for a starting spot in the wide areas for England, so Saka should be eager to impress. He averaged 0.87 shots on target per 90 during England’s Nations League B campaign, but we can expect this to increase against an Andorra side that have conceded nine shots on target across their opening two qualifying games. Saka averaged 1.19 shots on target per 90 across his 25 Premier League appearances during the 24/25 domestic campaign.

📊 Andorra v England Form and Tactics
England’s first few matches under Thomas Tuchel revealed some early signs of how the former Chelsea manager sees this England side. England have lined up in a 4-2-3-1 shape in both of their qualifying matches so far, this has taken a more attacking form given the quality of opposition that England have faced. Tuchel isn’t afraid of giving players a chance, as shown by his selection of Trevoh Chalobah, his inclusion of players like Henderson and Toney in the squad also shows that he values experience, which may slightly irk England fans given the favouritism that was in place under Gareth Southgate.
The full backs were really interesting in both games, Myles Lewis-Skelly scored the first goal of the Tuchel era on his England debut, and Reece James continued the trend with a superb free kick against Latvia. Tuchel has always valued his full backs, and they can continue to be backed for shots and attacking returns as long as he is in charge. We may even see wing backs at some point against some of the more elite side,s which would further advance this suggestion.
The biggest challenge for Thomas Tuchel is in the middle of the park. England have long struggled to have control in the middle of the park, especially in the big games, with players like Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham not quite suited to this role. This may be why Tuchel has called up Henderson and Jones, who he may see as more comfortable in moving the ball through the thirds. This won’t be as evident here, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on as England face off against more talented sides.
Andorra are the lowest-ranked side in the group, and this has shown in their first few qualifying games. They are yet to score in qualifying and have lost both of these games against Albania and Latvia, the same opposition that England saw off without even conceding a goal. This highlights the gap in quality we’ll see between the sides here, Andorra didn’t even have a shot in their defeat to Albania last time out. Andorra finished bottom of their Nations League D group, failing to win a game in a group with Moldova and Malta.
