📈 Aston Villa v Bologna Form & Tactics

Unai Emery’s men haven’t been at their best in recent Premier League games, and they were held to a 1-1 draw by a struggling Nottingham Forest side last time out. Villa have now won just two out of their last eight league games, which means they have been overtaken in the league standings by Man United. Villa are still in the top four, but Liverpool are breathing down their necks, trailing by just three points.

By contrast, Villa have been dominant in the Europa League this campaign, and they cruised past Lille in the previous knockout round with a 3-0 aggregate win. That made it eight wins in a row on the European stage.

Bologna are eighth in Serie A with little left to play for domestically, sitting nine points behind Roma as we approach the final few games. Their Europa League run has been one of the highlights of their season, and Bologna will be desperate to make it to the semi-finals.

The Rossoblu have only lost twice in the competition so far, but both defeats were handed to them by Aston Villa. It’s another daunting upcoming matchup for the Italian side, but they will have belief, especially after beating Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in the previous round.

Youri Tielemans made his return to the starting eleven at the weekend to partner Amadou Onana. Ross Barkley played in a more advanced role with Emi Buendia benched, while John McGinn and Morgan Rogers occupied the flanks.

Buendia could return to the starting eleven here, which means Rogers could feature centrally again. Ezri Konsa should return to the starting eleven midweek to partner Pau Torries, but Emi Martinez has emerged as a doubt after suffering an injury in the warmup against Nottingham Forest.

Bologna came away with a 2-0 win against Lecce last time out, despite Vincenzo Italiano opting for a rotated lineup. Rowe only featured from the bench along with Pobega, while Lewis Ferguson was missing from the matchday squad, which isn’t a good sign for the Rossoblu.

Santiago Castro should lead the line again, and Federico Bernadeschi is likely to start on the right wing in place of Riccardo Orsolini.
