Chelsea welcome Aston Villa with the Blues losing just one of their last five matches across all competitions. Stanford Bridge hasn’t quite been a fortress for the Blues this term with Maresca’s side winning just four of their eight matches at home.

Aston Villa have won their last 10 matches across all competitions, notably seeing BTTS in each of their last five victories. Their latest triumph was a 2-1 win over Manchester United, notable for two brilliant goals by Morgan Rogers.

📈 Chelsea v Aston Villa Form & Tactics

Chelsea battled back well to earn a point at St James’ Park last weekend, but the first half was a snapshot of the issues that continue to plague this young squad. Chelsea were all over the place for the first 20 minutes in that clash, and could have been three or four goals down if Newcastle had taken their chances. Maresca managed to rally the side for a comeback in the second half, but Chelsea find themselves in those situations far too often.

Chelsea also picked up six yellow cards in that game, highlighting another issue which Maresca is having to manage as his side don’t have the best temperament. This is further confirmed by the four red cards that Chelsea have picked up in the Premier League this term, and they still never look too far away from a sending off despite these instances. This is all down to the youthful profile of the squad which will continue to affect Chelsea’s consistency and temperament.

Aston Villa are on a remarkable run of form and Unai Emery deserves real credit for turning their season around. Villa were languishing just above the relegation zone after five games of the season, but have since rocketed up the standings and now could be an outside shout to disrupt the title race. It should be noted that Villa are outperforming their xG numbers to some tune, with a +8 difference - only Tottenham (+10) have seen a bigger difference in their xG numbers this term.

While this isn’t sustainable, it shows that Villa are willing to take plenty of risks and that Emery trusts his players to have shots from distance and unlikely angles - which isn’t a trend replicated throughout the Premier League as most managers want their sides to carve out chances that have a higher statistical chance of finding the back of the net.

This isn’t the only area where Villa are bucking the trend, while most of the Premier League has shifted towards a physical and direct approach - Villa are still persisting with their system under Emery that sees them build through the thirds. The narrow nature of their frontline is another advantage that Villa have, it allows them to penetrate the opposition backline incredibly effectively.

📔 Chelsea v Aston Villa Formation & Team News

Enzo Maresca has had issues when rotating the Chelsea side this season as I don’t think he really trusts the options he has in reserve. This has led to Chelsea having a very obvious best starting eleven, it’s just that they can’t use it every week with the volume of fixtures they have.

This starting lineup sees Gusto slot in at right back which allows James to operate as a midfielder - the shape you’ll see when Chelsea are on the ball is a 3-2-4-1 with James or Caicedo dropping between the centre backs to set up that base and allow the fullbacks to roam or go into midfield.

Cole Palmer is slowly building back to full fitness, and got another 60 minutes or so under his belt against Newcastle last weekend. Chelsea will still be without Estevao who isn’t expected to return to the squad until the New Year. Levi Colwill and Romeo Lavia remain long term absentees for the Blues.

Aston Villa like to build through the thirds and play with a narrow 4-2-3-1 shape with Rogers and McGinn tucking inside from the wide areas - allowing Maatsen and Cash to push high and offer Villa width. This gives Villa an overload in central areas, and also offers a direct path to goal if they can win the ball back in advantageous areas.

I’d watch out for Villa in transition here, they have so many strong ball carriers such as Rogers and McGinn that can emerge from Chelsea pressure and target a vulnerable rest defence which hasn’t been that effective for the Blues so far this season. Pau Torres is expected to miss this game which is a blow for Villa as he was starting to find real form, and is an important player for how Villa want to play.
