Aston Villa continue their immense push for Champions League football on Saturday night when they face a struggling Chelsea side who have their own aspirations for European football.

This will be the fourth edition of Aston Villa v Chelsea this season, with each side claiming an away victory, albeit in different competitions.

Villa grabbed a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in the opening weeks of the Premier League season which was followed by a bore draw in West London in the FA Cup Fourth Round, that later led to a 3-1 win for Chelsea in the replay at Villa Park. 

Aston Villa have had plenty of joy against the Chelsea defence, registering at least 5+ shots on target in all of this season’s encounters (5 ,5 ,7) averaging 14.3 shots.

Chelsea have also posed real danger, netting three goals in a dominant display in the FA Cup replay, registering 8 shots on target in that clash. The Blues picked up 4 shots on target in the other two encounters.

Both sides have shown short tempers in this fixture this season, with each team picking up 5 yellow cards and Malo Gusto seeing red in his side’s 1-0 defeat at home.

Before their midweek defeat, Chelsea were unbeaten in their last four away games in the Premier League (D3 W1), playing their best football of the season. The Blues were heroic in stealing a point from title favourites Man City but returned back to earth fairly quickly with draws to Brentford and Sheffield United.

Chelsea were unlucky not to pick up three points in their 2-2 draw to basement boys Sheffield United, but their naivety in front of goal cost them the full royalties, and not for the first time this season. 

Action seems to be the theme of Chelsea’s away trips this season, with both teams scoring in an impressive 12 of their 16 league away matches and three or more goals have hit the net in all of those games, as well as their midweek visit to the Emirates adding to the latter category.

Saturday’s visitors have excelled at scoring on the road, netting in all but three of their away days this season, but their vulnerability at the back has been ever present, keeping just two clean sheets from 16 attempts and conceding 2+ goals in nine of their last 11 away Premier League games.
