📈 Atalanta v Bayern Munich Form & Tactics
Atalanta have already been written off by quite a few ahead of this tie, but they are used to being underdogs and should take plenty of confidence from their 4-1 win over Dortmund at home in the playoff round of the competition.
Atalanta’s chances at the Allianz will be even slimmer than they are here, so the Italian side must give themselves a platform to build on in Germany next week - even if that is a 2-1 defeat.
Atalanta have improved quite considerably since appointing Raffaele Palladino, who took over from Ivan Juric, who had the worst win percentage as an Atalanta coach since the 2014/15 season.
That appointment was always a bit odd after Juric had struggled at Southampton prior to getting the role, but Palladino has set Atalanta up in a more solid and aggressive manner, which has allowed them to compete in Serie A and in the Champions League.
Atalanta have only lost seven of the 26 games that Palladino has taken charge of as manager, with the Italian boss boasting a win percentage just shy of 60%.
I think Vincent Kompany is desperate to win this competition; it’s always seen as the marker for success at a club like Bayern Munich, where domestic success is expected every year.
Bayern have an 11-point lead in the Bundesliga yet again this season, so they can solely focus on the Champions League, which is evident when looking at Kompany’s team he put out against Gladbach last time out. Bayern rotated in that game, and still ran out 4-1 winners with Kompany clearly not underestimating the threat that Atalanta can pose to his side here.
📔 Atalanta v Bayern Munich Formation & Team News
Atalanta will set up in a 3-4-3 shape, which has been the set shape for the club for many years, first implemented by long-term coach Gasperini. Palladino is a student of Gasperini, so it’s unlikely that we see Atalanta drift away from this shape anytime soon. The front three allow the Italian side to always have a presence in the final third; they’ll be pushed deep at times here by Bayern’s dominance of the ball, but should get opportunities to launch a few counterattacks against the German side.
Bayern Munich will line up in a 4-2-3-1 and look to break Atalanta down through their intricate passing patterns. Interestingly, Bayern are the only side in the Champions League this season that have two players who have completed 100+ line-breaking passes in Kimmich and Pavlovic. This is an excellent insight into how Bayern look to play, and how they always look to penetrate the opposition through central areas, which makes them such a dangerous side in the final third.
The main injury concern from a Bayern Munich point of view is the fitness of Harry Kane. He was rested for Bayern’s 4-1 win over Gladbach, but faces a bit of a race to be fit in time for this clash. Bayern Munich are also without Neuer and Davies at the moment, though Kompany has had to adapt to those losses already and has coped well with Bayern’s defensive injury issues this season.
