📈 Bayern Munich v Atalanta Form & Tactics

Bayern Munich managed to hold on for a 1-1 draw with nine men over the weekend against Leverkusen as they strengthened their grip on the Bundesliga title. Vincent Kompany’s side can take this second leg quite easily after they steamrolled Atalanta in the first leg, running out 6-1 winners. They’ll be comforted by the knowledge that no side has ever progressed to the next round of the Champions League when losing by 5+ goals in the first leg.

I’d expect Bayern to rotate pretty heavily here. One of the main advantages that Vincent Kompany and his team have over the other challengers for the Champions League is that their schedule isn’t as intense. Bayern Munich have already pretty much secured the Bundesliga title, and the Champions League is always the marker for success at a club like Bayern Munich. Bayern have won eight of their nine games in the Champions League this season, netting 28 goals in the process.

Atalanta suffered the same fate as the majority of their Italian rivals in the Champions League last week, as they were put to the sword by a side that was clearly far superior to the quality they could offer. It’s a worrying look for Serie A at the moment. When Atalanta exit the competition, there will be no more Italian representation in the Champions League this season, at only the quarter-final stage.

Atalanta won’t have a massive appetite for this game; it’s highly unlikely that they are even able to win the match, let alone claw back a five-goal deficit. They also have a European battle domestically to focus on, and enter this game in really poor form, having failed to win any of their last five matches across all competitions ahead of this clash - but did manage to hold Inter to a draw over the weekend.

📔 Bayern Munich v Atalanta Formation & Team News

Bayern Munich should rotate quite heavily here, but Vincent Kompany’s side showed a very interesting tactical display in the first leg last week. Two of their six goals were on the end of 10+ passing sequences, with the attacking players dropping quite deep to start these moves.

It’s a very bold tactic, and one that I haven’t seen implemented too effectively before - but Bayern certainly have the players to play in this way at the top end of the pitch. I think Vincent Kompany’s aim with this is to draw out low blocks; they’ve become annoyingly common in football to the neutral, but by playing like this, the opposition simply has to come out of their shape.

Atalanta will continue in their 3-4-3 shape, probably looking to try out a few new tactical systems rather than actually trying to find a way back into this tie. I wouldn’t be surprised to see rotation from the Italian side either; their main focus now will be on securing European football through their league finish.
